System and method for associating media files with messages

Security is improved in a communication system in which a communication connection is established when a user who has received a software button on his computing device (a Recipient) clicks on the button. When a Recipient first actuates a software button, a basic type of communication connection is established, during which the Recipient's identity can be verified. The Recipient then establishes a personal identification code, which he will have to provide upon future actuations of the software button. The system then enables other types of communication connections to be established by the Recipient. After the Recipient actuates the software button and verifies his identity, the system remembers the identity and location of the computing device he is using. When the Recipient subsequently actuates the software button, the identity and location of his computing device are checked, and verification of his identity is suppressed if they have not changed.

Method and system for improved communication security

A method and system for providing one or more location-based services using the location-of-interest of a user or an electronic journal entry. In the first service, a user's terminal periodically determines whether its current geo-location is within a predefined distance of a location-of-interest. If the determination is in the affirmative, the user's terminal receives an audio recording from a data-processing system and plays it to the user as a reminder. In the second service, however, the user's terminal receives the audio recording from the data-processing system regardless of whether its current geo-location is or is not within a predefined distance of the location-of-interest. In contrast to the first service, the second service uses the virtual presence of a user to initiate the service, while first service uses the current geo-location of the user's terminal to initiate the service.

Method and system for providing one or more location-based services using the location-of-interest of an electronic journal

A system is disclosed which provides communication of recorded voice messages over a network among a plurality of users having voice communication devices. The system has a voice message server connected to the network, which includes a receiver which receives from a sending user's communication device a voice message signal including a header component and a recorded voice message component is stored at the server in association with the corresponding header. The header component identifies the sending user and an intended recipient user, and it is transmitted to the communication device of the intended recipient identified in the header component. The corresponding voice message component is transmitted to the recipient user's communication device in response to the recipient user's communication device requesting it. The recipient user may send a responsive voice message to the server addressed to the sending user.

Voice message communication method and system

Online searching related to a physical object by a user making use of a computing device is accomplished by creating a representation of the object at the user's computing device. A software button originating remote from the user's computing device is provided to the user's computing device, and the button is constructed based upon the representation of the object. The software button is associated with a second device in use by a subscriber associated with the object, the button and it is actuable by the user. Upon actuation of the software button by the user, an executable agent is downloaded to his computing device, effective to establish a connection between the user's computing device and the second device.

Method and system for online searching of physical objects

A software button and software agent downloaded to a computing in response to actuation of the button make it possible to create a communication connection providing privacy, security and dynamic control of service. In one embodiment an online telephone directory comprised of software buttons is provided, in which a calling party can select a called party by clicking a software button dedicated to the called party. The button provides an identification of the called party, but all contact information is hidden and inaccessible to the calling party. Upon actuation of the button server containing the directory causes download of a software agent to the calling party's computing device, causing it to establish communication with the called party. In a second embodiment, software buttons provide a communication service which is dynamic, the nature or type of service changing based on conditions predefined by the called. For example, a called party may specify that, during business hours, communication be by telephone to a specific telephone number and outside of business hours, communication be by text message if urgent and e-mail if not urgent. When the calling party clicks a software button, the software agent downloaded to his computing device would then be a soft phone during business hours. Outside of business hours, a software agent would be downloaded to the calling party which would inquire whether the call is urgent and, depending upon the response, would provide a text message agent or an e-mail agent, respectively.

Communication method and system

A data network routing apparatus and method are presented. The data switch comprises a packet engine integrated with an optical engine. The optical engine and packet engine are under common software and/or hardware control, and communicably interconnected. As a result, the physical state of the optics is continually and immediately available to the packet engine, in substantially real time. The packet engine implements a routing algorithm which operates on at least the data traffic in the network and the optical transport topology. The routing apparatus periodically updates the routing algorithm's operands under normal operation, and in the event of the failure of a communications link in the network, the routing apparatus immediately updates the routing algorithm operands in response. A network comprising a plurality of nodes with such immediate rerouting capability is achieved by utilizing a plurality of the disclosed data switches as its nodes.

The present invention is a restoration scheme for an ad-hoc ATM LAN wherein ATM cells are transported over a wireless point-to-point link. A method for restoring communications in the ATM network includes the steps of: generating a failure message indicative of a failure of a network element, the failure message including an identification of said network element and a predetermined VPI/VCI reserved for failure reporting; communicating the failure message to all said switching nodes in said network; and referencing updated routing tables at said switching nodes, wherein said network element indicated in said failure message is eliminated from routes in said network. Each of the switching nodes is included in a network tree spanning all said switching nodes in the network, wherein each of the switching nodes is included as a root in a specific network tree, each said network tree having a tree identification, the failure message further including a tree identification field containing the tree identification. The method also includes the step of routing the failure message in the switching nodes of the network based on the tree identification. The failure message includes a time stamp indicative of the time said failure message was generated, and the referencing of the updated routing tables is delayed a predetermined time period from the time of said time stamp before referencing said updated routing tables.

Method and apparatus for restoration of an ATM network

A facility is provided for establishing a relatively low-speed path from a user desiring to access the well-known Internet and establishing a high-speed path from the Internet to the user so that the data speed accommodates both the user's requests and a response from an Internet web/host site. Moreover, a user may be mobile, in which case the low-speed path is a conventional wireless path. In most cases, a predetermined spectrum of frequencies, such as one or more television channels, is used as the high-speed path from Internet.

A telecommunications system capable of transmitting an N byte packet over a common communications channel by: temporally dividing the common communications channel into time slots that have a duration equal to ##EQU1## seconds, where i is a natural number greater than one, C is a constant and R is the transmission rate of the common communications channel in bytes per second; splitting the N byte packet into i p-packets; preparing an M byte training sequence; and transmitting the M byte training sequence and the p-packets over the common communications channel in consecutive time slots.

A wireless services data network supporting the mobility of an Internet Protocol (IP) over ATM networks is implemented such that a joint ATM-layer hand-off and MAC-layer hand-off are respectively used to handle in-session and inter-session mobility. In this way the effect of mobility is localized and transparent to higher-layer protocols. Also, different functions, including the so-called Address Resolution protocol, location of a mobile, and ATM connection, are combined to reduce front-end delay for connectionless packet transmissions in connection-oriented ATM networks.

The present invention is a signaling and control architecture for establishing a connection between mobile users in a wireless ATM LAN. The ATM LAN includes a plurality of portable base station (PBS) switching nodes coupled together to enable communication between said nodes, wherein the nodes are configurable in an arbitrary topology to form an ad-hoc network. The present invention includes network management techniques for configuration of data tables used for connection control. Mobility management techniques are disclosed to handle mobile sign-ons and idle handoffs, locate mobile users during connection and setup and perform handoffs when a mobile is actively involved in a connection. Connection control procedures are also included for setting up and releasing connections on demand.

Signaling and control architecture for an ad-hoc ATM LAN

A system and method for routing ATM cells in a wireless ATM local area network (LAN) that use portable base station (PBS) switching nodes. Routing of cells to and from mobile users within the network is accomplished utilizing a novel routing scheme which preserves cell sequence. Each user transmitting data to another user is associated with a Source Home Station or node and each user receiving data is associated with a Destination Home Station or node. When a connection is established in the network between a first mobile user and a second mobile user, the ATM cells are routed along a fixed path from the first mobile user to the associated Source Home Station and along a fixed path between the Source Home Station to the Destination Home Station and then along a fixed path from the Destination Home Station to the second destination user. In this way cell sequence is maintain by utilizing the Source Home to Destination Home path. Mobile users within the network are also associated with a Local PBS which can be different from the Home Stations as the mobile moves around the network. The Local PBSs associated with the mobile user are slowly updated to be the Home Stations to cure inefficient routing.

Method and apparatus for routing ATM cells in an AD-ATM LAN

An access method allows an end-user device (mobile or stationary) a) to place stand-alone requests for access to a communications network for transmission thereto of one or more information packets arriving at an empty buffer of the end user-device, and b) to piggyback the requests with packet transmissions for subsequent information packets arriving at a non-empty buffer of the end-user device.

Access method for broadband and narrowband networks

The present invention is a portable base station (PBS) switching device for use in a wireless ATM local area network (LAN). The PBS includes a plurality of high speed interfaces which operate, for example, in the Gb/s range and which are adapted to couple to other PBS s in the network. The high speed interfaces are coupled to an ATM switching fabric adapted to selectively route incoming ATM cells to an appropriate output port in said PBS without any VPI (virtual path identifier) translation at transit PBSs. The PBS includes wireless interface and processor unit for coupling to mobile users which may include laptop and notebook computers. Memory is included within the processor unit for selectively storing ATM cells according to their VPI. In one preferred embodiment of the PBS a passive optical unit is used to transmit and receive data between PBSs. The passive optical unit may include a laser transmitter and optical receiver.
