A piston capable of operating at a high temperature and consequently contributing to a high in-cylinder temperature, as well as reducing engine oil temperature, when used in an internal combustion engine, is provided. The piston includes an upper portion and a lower portion welded together to present a cooling gallery therebetween. The cooling gallery extends circumferentially around a center axis of the piston and is spaced the center axis. A partition is located in the cooing gallery and extends from one inner surface to another inner surface of the cooling gallery. The partition extends circumferentially around the center axis, and divides the cooling gallery into at least a first gallery portion and a second gallery portion. The partition can be formed as one piece with the upper portion or the lower portion. Alternatively, the partition can be formed as a separate piece from the upper portion and the lower portion.

Dual gallery steel piston

A method is presented for determining an offset frequency of a frequency comb. The method includes: generating a beam of light with a waveform that repeats regularly in the time domain and exhibits a frequency comb in the frequency domain; directing the beam of light towards a point of incidence on a material; and detecting oscillation of a photocurrent in the material that is caused by the beam of light. Of note, the beam of light has an optical bandwidth that includes light propagating at a first frequency and at a second frequency, where the first frequency is less than the second frequency and the ratio of the second frequency to the first frequency is n:m, where n=m+i, m is an integer greater than one, and n and i are positive integers. Additionally, the material has a band gap and the band gap is not more than n times the first frequency.

A piston assembly including a piston body pivotally connected to a connecting rod by a wrist pin. The wrist pin includes a sealed cavity therein partially filled with a heat transfer medium. The heat transfer medium may be composed of a fusible alloy. The sealed cavity may be comprised of discrete compartments. The wrist pin may be integrated with the connecting rod and share a conjoined sealed cavity therewith so that heat transfer medium can draw heat effectively away from the piston body.

Piston pin for heat dissipation

A piston and method is provided that inhibits the potential catastrophic damage to an internal combustion engine, thereby reducing the risk of costly damage to the engine. The piston includes a piston body having an upper combustion surface separated from an internal cooling chamber by a wall. The a pocket extends into the upper combustion surface to a closed bottom surface of the wall. A tubular member is disposed in the pocket. The tubular member extends upwardly from the upper surface. Should a valve head drop from its normal operating position, the valve head impacts the tubular member and forms a blow-by through passage extending from the upper combustion surface into the cooling chamber.

Piston with blow-by feature and method of preventing catastrophic failure to an internal combustion engine

A piston assembly and connecting rod therefor is provided. The connecting rod has an elongate body extending to an end for operable attachment to a piston. The end has a wrist pin bore extending between opposite sides of the body. The wrist pin bore has a wavy profile extending between the sides. The wavy profile has at least one concave surface with a valley extending along a circumferential direction of the wrist pin bore and convex surfaces having peaks extending along a circumferential direction of the wrist pin bore on laterally opposite sides of the valley. The peaks and valleys cooperate to form a smooth load gradient and uniform lubrication flow across the interface region between the wrist pin bore and the wrist pin extending therethrough.
