A magnetic recording medium includes a rigid substrate, an amorphous soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) on the substrate, a dead magnetic layer on the SUL, a seed layer on the dead magnetic layer, and a magnetic recording layer (MRL) on the seed layer. The dead magnetic layer is configured to provide an interdiffusion region between the amorphous SUL and seed layer with a saturation magnetic moment per unit area less than 5×10electromagnetic unit (emu)/cm, and to produce a recording medium having an increase in tracks per inch (TPI) without significant reduction in bits per inch (BPI), and a net increase in areal density capacity (ADC) relative to a recoding medium that does not have the dead magnetic layer.

Magnetic recording media with dead magnetic layer

Various apparatuses, systems, methods, and media are disclosed to provide a magnetic recording medium with a tungsten (W) pre-seed layer. The W pre-seed layer has a higher conductance than a CrTi pre-seed layer with a similar thickness. In one embodiment, the W pre-seed layer is made of about 95 atomic percent or more of W. The W pre-seed layer has lower electrical resistivity than the CrTi pre-seed layer. As a result, the thickness of the W pre-seed layer can be reduced as compared to the thickness of a CrTi pre-seed layer if a similar conductance is to be achieved. The magnetic recording materials deposited on top of the W pre-seed layer with the reduced thickness provide comparable crystallographic orientation and recording performance to those deposited on top of a thicker CrTi pre-seed layer with a similar conductance.

Magnetic recording media with tungsten pre-seed layer

Magnetic media including a magnetic recording layer structure formed of alternating magnetic recording sublayers and non-magnetic exchange control sublayers. The magnetic recording layer structure may include at least one magnetic recording sublayer formed to include a pair of thin films, with the films having different concentrations of platinum, ruthenium, and/or oxide segregants. That is, the sublayer has a 'dual layer' structure. The dual layer structure can provide a gradient in magnetic anisotropy, saturation magnetization, and/or intergranular magnetic exchange coupling across the sublayer. In some examples, the film nearer to the substrate of the magnetic media has a higher platinum concentration than the other film. In one aspect, the magnetic media includes the substrate and the magnetic recording layer structure on the substrate, with the structure including six magnetic recording sublayers. In another aspect, a method of fabricating magnetic media with such structures is provided.

Magnetic media design with multiple non-magnetic exchange control layers and graded magnetic sublayers

Magnetic recording media including a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) formed over a plasma-polished substrate or pre-seed layer. In some examples, the substrate or pre-seed layer is plasma-polished using an inert gas such as krypton so that the roughness of the surface on which the SUL is deposited is reduced. The roughness reduction can lead to improved crystallographic texture within subsequently deposited media films, and consequently, to increased recording performance of the media. In particular, media signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), linear recording density, and areal recording density or areal density capacity (ADC) can be improved. In one aspect, a carbon deposition/etching apparatus may be modified to polish the substrate or pre-seed layer with krypton or other inert gases, rather than be used to deposit carbon overcoat.

Magnetic recording media with plasma-polished pre-seed layer or substrate

A magnetic recording medium includes a substrate, a soft magnetic underlayer on the substrate, and a dual seed layer. The dual seed layer includes a first seed layer comprising NiFe at a first concentration, and a second seed layer comprising NiFe at a second concentration different from the first concentration and a segregant. The first seed layer may be on a soft magnetic underlayer and the second seed layer is on the first seed layer. The magnetic recording medium may further include one or more magnetic recording layers on the dual seed layer. The magnetic recording medium with the composition-graded dual seed layer may provide small grain size and good crystallographic texture for layers on the dual seed layer, including the magnetic recording layers.

Dual seed layer for magnetic recording media

Magnetic recording media including a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) formed over an oxidized pre-seed layer. In some examples, the pre-seed layer is oxidized to reduce an amount of intermixing between the pre-seed layer and the SUL. The reduction in intermixing via oxidation can lead to improved recording performance of the recording media that are deposited on the SUL. In particular, media overwrite, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), linear recording density, and areal recording density or areal density capacity (ADC) can be improved. In one aspect, a deposition apparatus may be modified to inject oxygen during pre-seed layer deposition to oxidize the pre-seed layer.

Magnetic recording media with oxidized pre-seed layer

Magnetic recording media including an interlayer configured to reduce lattice mismatch with adjacent layers of the media, such as an adjacent seed layer or an adjacent underlayer. In one example, an interlayer alloy is provided that includes tungsten (W) along with Cobalt (Co), Chromium (Cr), and Ruthenium (Ru). The atomic percentages of W and Ru within the interlayer are selected so that the amount lattice mismatch between the interlayer and its adjacent layers is below a preselected amount, such as below 3% as quantified by d-spacing. In some examples, the atomic percentage of Ru is greater than 25% and the atomic percentage of W is 2-10%. Methods of fabricating the magnetic recording media are also provided.

Magnetic recording media design with reduced lattice mismatch between adjacent intermediate layers

Magnetic media including a magnetic recording layer structure of at least six magnetic recording sublayers and at least six non-magnetic exchange control sublayers in an alternating pattern are provided. The magnetic recording layer structure includes a gradient of platinum content across the magnetic recording sublayers such that a top magnetic recording sublayer has a lowest platinum content and a bottom magnetic recording sublayer has a highest platinum content. In one such case, the magnetic media includes a substrate and the magnetic recording layer structure on the substrate. In another case, a method of fabricating such magnetic media is provided.

Magnetic media design with multiple non-magnetic exchange control layers

A method for manufacturing a magnetic media for magnetic data recording that improves smoothness for reduced magnetic spacing, and also improves mechanical integration to improve reliability and lifespan of the data recording system. A magnetic material such as a magnetic recording layer is deposited over underlying layers that include a substrate. A first etching is performed that employs a Xe plasma. A second etching is then performed that employs an Ar plasma. The two step etching process advantageously improves smoothness of the surface of the magnetic layer which allows for a thinner overcoat for reduced magnetic spacing. The two step etching process also results in less head disk crashes, resulting in improved reliability.

A magnetic storage medium according to one embodiment includes a substrate; an onset layer formed above the substrate, the onset layer comprising ruthenium and titanium oxide; and a magnetic oxide layer formed directly on the onset layer. A method according to one embodiment includes sputtering using a target of ruthenium and titanium oxide for forming an onset layer above a substrate, the onset layer comprising ruthenium and titanium oxide; and forming a magnetic oxide layer directly on the onset layer. Onset layer for perpendicular magnetic recording media

Fabrication methods for magnetic recording media that use a plasma polish are disclosed. For one exemplary method, a film of a magnetic recording medium is deposited, and a top surface of the film is polished utilizing a plasma formed by a noble gas to smoothen the top surface of the film. A subsequent layer is then deposited onto the polished top surface of the film. A top surface of the subsequent layer has a reduced roughness by being deposited on the polished top surface of the film.

Perpendicular magnetic recording media has been enhanced by controlling the initial growth of magnetic oxide layers and increased magnetic isolation between the grains in the initial magnetic layer. An onset magnetic oxide layer is sputter deposited in an argon-oxygen gas mixture between the main CoPtCr-oxide magnetic layers and the underlying Ru layer. The insertion of the onset magnetic oxide layer enhances the coercivity of the oxide magnetic layers and also improves the nucleation field. The media signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate also are significantly improved due to the improvement of the initial segregation of Co magnetic grains in the magnetic oxide layers.

System, method and apparatus for onset magnetic oxide layer for high performance perpendicular magnetic recording media

A method, apparatus and database system restore tenant data in a multi-tenant environment. The method comprises: logging a plurality of tenants' requests to the database; with respect to a particular tenant who requires restoring tenant data, acquiring a log of events which affect contents of the database and start from a particular backup point; and only restoring in the database data of the particular tenant to the particular backup point, according to the acquired log of events.
