Apparatuses, systems, and methods are disclosed for efficient control of a heating element. A sensor is configured to detect a state of water in proximity to a heating element. A switch device is configured to control a supply of power to the heating element. A hardware controller device is in communication with the sensor and the switch. The hardware controller device is configured to adjust the supply of power to the heating element using the switch device based on the state of water in proximity to the heating element.

Efficient control of a heating element

A ventilation system having a mask, a blowing assembly, and a processor. The mask has a mask body and a pressure sensor operatively associated with the mask body and configured to measure pressure within the mask. The mask body defines an inlet opening and a plurality of leak openings. The blowing assembly is positioned in fluid communication with the inlet opening of the mask body and configured to direct air to the inlet opening of the mask body. The processor is positioned in operative communication with the blowing assembly and the pressure sensor of the mask. The processor is configured to selectively control the blowing assembly based upon at least the measured pressure within the mask.

Ventilation devices and systems and methods of using same

An oxygen-sensing assembly for attachment to a urinary catheter may include a housing having a flow pathway extending between an inlet end and an outlet end thereof, an oxygen sensor in operable communication with the flow pathway of the housing, the oxygen sensor configured to detect oxygen levels of a fluid flowing through the flow pathway and a flowrate sensor configured to detect a flowrate of the fluid flowing through the flow pathway. A risk of acute kidney injury may be determined based on the mass flowrate of oxygen through the flow pathway, determined based on the detected oxygen levels and the flowrate of the fluid through the flow pathway. Related catheter assemblies and methods are also disclosed.

Catheter assemblies, oxygen-sensing assemblies, and related methods

An oxygen-sensing assembly for attachment to a urinary catheter may include a housing having a flow pathway extending between an inlet end and an outlet end thereof, an oxygen sensor in operable communication with the flow pathway of the housing, the oxygen sensor configured to detect oxygen levels of a fluid flowing through the flow pathway, a flowrate sensor configured to detect a flowrate of the fluid flowing through the flow pathway, and a temperature sensor configured to detect a temperature of the fluid flowing through the flow pathway.

A basic life support system (BLSS) includes a processing element and an output element, such as a display screen or an audio output element, for providing an individual with real-time instructions on providing emergency medical care to a patient until paramedics or other healthcare professionals arrive to take over care for the patient. The instructions may be provided as graphics, including animations, as text, audibly, or as a combination of visible and audible elements. The BLSS may be configured for providing emergency medical care to individuals who have suffered from ventricular fibrillation. Accordingly, the BLSS may also include a defibrillation apparatus, an air or oxygen supply, a respiratory interface, one or more sensors, or a combination thereof.

System for providing emergency medical care with real-time instructions and associated methods

Methods for noninvasively measuring, or estimating, functional residual capacity or effective lung volume include obtaining carbon dioxide and flow measurements at or near the mouth of a subject. Such measurements are obtained during baseline breathing and during and shortly after inducement of a change in the subject's effective ventilation. The obtained measurements are evaluated to determine the amount of time required for exhaled carbon dioxide levels to return to normal&#x2014;effectively an evaluation of carbon dioxide 'washout' from the subject's lungs. Conversely, carbon dioxide and flow measurements may be evaluated to determine the amount of time it takes carbon dioxide to 'wash in,' or reach peak levels within, the lungs of the subject following the change in the subject's effective ventilation. Apparatus for effective such methods are also disclosed.

Noninvasive effective lung volume estimation

A differential Fick technique including a first phase in which baseline breathing parameters may be established and a second phase in which a change in the effective ventilation of a patient is induced. The durations of the first and second phases may be substantially the same and may be abbreviated relative to the durations of comparable phases of previously known differential Fick techniques. The disclosed differential Fick technique also lacks a recovery period in which the respiratory parameters of a patient are permitted to return to 'normal' levels.

Rebreathing methods including oscillating, substantially equal rebreathing and nonrebreathing periods

A method of calculating the carbon dioxide elimination of a patient that includes counteracting any inaccuracy or inconsistency in respiratory flow measurements that may be caused by 'noise', such as is attributable to respiratory circuit leaks, signal drift, a non-unity respiratory quotient, or another respiratory flow error-inducing factor. The method includes monitoring the respiratory flow and carbon dioxide of the patient during at least a portion of both inspiration and expiration; calculating an inspiratory tidal volume, an inspiratory volume averaged carbon dioxide fraction, an expiratory tidal volume, and an expiratory volume averaged carbon dioxide fraction; and selecting a tidal volume to replace at least one of the inspiratory tidal volume and the expiratory tidal volume. The carbon dioxide elimination of the patient is then calculated with the select tidal volume, the inspiratory volume averaged carbon dioxide fraction, and the expiratory volume averaged carbon dioxide fraction.

ISO-volumetric method of measuring carbon dioxide elimination

A method of non-invasively estimating the intrapulmonary shunt in a patient. The method includes non-invasively measuring respiratory flow, respiratory carbon dioxide content, and arterial blood oxygen content. A re-breathing process is employed to facilitate an estimate of the patient's pulmonary capillary blood flow. Any inaccuracies of the arterial blood oxygen content are corrected to provide a substantially accurate arterial blood oxygen content measurement. The respiratory flow and carbon dioxide content and arterial blood oxygen content measurements, and the pulmonary capillary blood flow estimate are employed to estimate an intrapulmonary shunt of the patient. The invention also includes a method of determining the total cardiac output of the patient which considers the estimated intrapulmonary shunt.
