Injectable pharmaceutical compositions, methods of use and formulation are disclosed. The compositions comprise: one or more water soluble complexes, each complex comprising a cyclodextrin or a cyclodextrin derivative and a hydrophobic drug; at least one preservative; and at least one co-solvent. The compositions are effectively preserved in accordance with the European Pharmacopoeia 2011 Test for Efficacy of Antimicrobial Preservation, satisfying at least the B criteria as it applies to parenterals, and the United States Pharmacopeia 2011 Guidelines for Antimicrobial Effectiveness Testing, satisfying the criteria for Category 1 (injectable) products.

A stable anaesthetic composition is described which is particularly suitable for use in cats and dogs. The composition comprises an aqueous solution of an anaesthetically effective amount of water soluble cyclodextrin or a cyclodextrin derivative complex of alfaxalone and a bugger, excluding phosphate buffer pH 7.0, 0.1 M mixed as defined in the British Pharmacopoeia 1998, such that the pH of the solution is from 6.0-8.0.

The composition comprises an aqueous solution of an anaesthetically effective amount of a water soluble cyclodextrin or a cyclodextrin derivative complex of alfaxalone and a buffer, excluding phosphate buffer pH 7.0, 0.1M mixed as defined in the British Pharmacopoeia 1998, such that the pH of the solution is from 6.0-8.0.
