Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to parallel sideband cooling of multiple trapped-ion motional modes with deflectors (e.g., acousto-optic deflectors or AODs) in quantum information processing (QIP) systems. A method and a system are described in which for an ion chain a first group of ions (e.g., middle section of the ion chain) and a second group of ions (e.g., outer sections of the ion chain) are identified. The method and system include performing sideband cooling by applying, to the first group of ions, a first pair of optical beams using a first pair of AODs, and applying, to the second group of ions, a second pair of optical beams using a second pair of AODs. For each AOD, an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) may be placed upstream to provide frequency modulation for matching frequency differences for correct detuning as part of the sideband cooling operation.

Parallel sideband cooling of multiple trapped-ion motional modes with deflectors

The use of multiple ion chains in a single ion trap for quantum information processing (QIP) systems is described. Each chain can have its own set of laser beams with which to implement and operate quantum gates within that chain, where each chain may therefore correspond to a single quantum computing register or core. Operations can be performed in parallel across all of these chains as they can be treated independently from each other. To implement and operate quantum gates between different chains, neighboring chains are merged into a single, larger chain, in which one can perform quantum gates between any of the ions in the larger chain. The combined chains can then be separated again by another shuttling event as needed. To implement and operate quantum gates between ions which do not occupy neighboring chains, swap gates can be used via a sequence of intervening chains.

Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to systems and methods for use in the implementation and/or operation of quantum information processing (QIP) systems, and more particularly, to the use of deflectors in trapped ion QIP systems for individually addressing long ion chains. Methods are described for using acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) in optical Raman transitions to implement single-qubit gates and two-qubit gates. A QIP system is also described that is configured to use AODs in optical Raman transitions to implement single-qubit gates and two-qubit gates.

Coherent optical manipulations in such QIP systems may require interferometric stability between the incident laser beams and the atomic-based qubit (or other type of qubit) being addressed. Mechanical vibrations that affect the position of the qubit with respect to the incident laser beams directly contribute to optical phase differences and reduce fidelity. A technique is described herein that is used to mitigate or reduce optical phase differences arising from vibrations of the qubits with respect to the incident laser beams. This technique is generally applicable to any condition that results in such vibrations and systems needing interferometric stability and is compatible with cryogenic environments.

The disclosure describes various aspects of techniques for elliptical beam design using cylindrical optics that may be used in different applications, including in quantum information processing (QIP) systems. In an aspect, the disclosure describes an optical system having a first optical component having a first focal length, a second optical component having a second focal length and aligned with a first direction, and a third optical component having a third focal length and aligned with a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. The optical system is configured to receive one or more optical beams (e.g., circular or elliptical) and apply different magnifications in the first direction and the second direction to the one or more optical beams to image one or more elliptical Gaussian optical beams. A method for generating elliptical optical beams using a system as the one described above is also disclosed.

A package-level, integrated high-vacuum ion-chip enclosure having improved thermal characteristics is disclosed. Enclosures in accordance with the present invention include first and second chambers that are located on opposite sides of a chip carrier, where the chambers are fluidically coupled via a conduit through the chip carrier. The ion trap is located in the first chamber and disposed on the chip carrier. A source for generating an atomic flux is located in the second chamber. The separation of the source and ion trap in different chambers affords thermal isolation between them, while the conduit between the chambers enables the ion trap to receive the atomic flux.

A technique is described in which a first multi-channel modulator (MCM), a first telecentric zoom lens, and a first interleaver that form a first optical path of the Raman system that receives a first array of beams and adjusts the first array of beams to individually address atomic-based qubits in a chain from a first direction. Moreover, a second MCM, a second telecentric zoom lens, and a second interleaver form a second optical path of the Raman system that receives a second array of beams and adjusts the second arrays of beams to individually address the atomic-based qubits in the chain from a second direction different from the first direction.

Aspects of the present disclosure describe techniques for independently controlling an angle (e.g., change in tilt) and/or position (e.g., change in lateral position) of an optical beam. For example, an optical beam control system may include a telescope with rotatable mirrors and lenses configured to provide a path to an optical beam to produce an output optical beam, which in turn is made into parallel optical beams following a diffractive optical element. The optical beam control system may also include a detector system to a beam angle and/or a beam position of one of the parallel optical beams to generate feedback signal or signals to control a rotation of one or more of the mirrors in the telescope such as to adjust the beam angle, the beam position, or both of the parallel optical beams. The optical beam control system may be part of a quantum information processing (QIP) system.

The disclosure describes various aspects of different for automated testing of optical assemblies. A system is described that includes an arm (e.g., a motorized arm) configured to be positioned over an optical assembly having a base plate with multiple optical elements that form one or more optical beam paths. The system also includes at least one optical tool that is configured to be removably attached to the arm and has a measurement instrument to perform a specified test on at least one of the optical beam paths. The arm is configured to adjust its position over the optical assembly to move the optical tool to the correct place to perform the specified test. The system may also include an optical tool changer configured to hold the optical tool in a tool holder when not attached to the arm and to hold additional optical tools in respective tool holders.
