Systems and methods are provided for the rapid sensing of biological and environmental analytes employing a portable digital image capture device, such as a smartphone camera, to capture an image of colorimetric microwave-accelerated bioassays ('MAB'), and a digital image analyzer that processes the colorimetric signals captured by the digital camera to determine the concentration of analyte in a test sample based on a calculated pixel intensity in the captured digital image. Such systems and methods may be used to detect either a disease condition or the presence of a toxin in a particular test specimen and may generate an electronic alert that may serve to alert a medical practitioner of such disease condition or presence of a toxin so that medical intervention may be undertaken. Such electronic alert may optionally be transmitted to the user of a smartphone that captured the image, thus allowing for rapid, in-situ point-of-care analysis and detection of such conditions and immediate medical intervention.

Rapid sensing of biological and environmental analytes

Compositions including metal nano- and/or micro-particles in solution with photosynthetic bioproduct producing microorganisms. These light harvesting complexes increase growth rates and photosynthetic efficiency of the constituent microorganisms, reducing the light required for a specific production level, or increases production for a specific light level.

Composition and method for enhancing photosynthetic efficiency of microorganisms

In this study, we demonstrated a unique application of our Metal-Assisted and Microwave-Accelerated Decrystallization (MAMAD) technique for the de-crystallization of uric acid crystals, which causes gout in humans when monosodium urate crystals accumulate in the synovial fluid found in the joints of bones. Given the shortcomings of the existing treatments for gout, we investigated whether the MAMAD technique can offer an alternative solution to the treatment of gout. Our technique is based on the use of metal nanoparticles (i.e., gold colloids) with low microwave heating to accelerate the de-crystallization process. In this regard, we employed a two-step process; (i) crystallization of uric acid on glass slides, which act as a solid platform to mimic a bone, (ii) de-crystallization of uric acid crystals on glass slides with the addition of gold colloids and low power microwave heating, which act as 'nano-bullets' when microwave heated in a solution. We observed that the size and number of the uric acid crystals were reduced by &#x3e;60% within 10 minutes of low power microwave heating. In addition, the use of gold colloids without microwave heating (i.e. control experiment) did not result in the de-crystallization of the uric acid crystals, which proves the utility of our MAMAD technique in the de-crystallization of uric acid.

Metal-assisted and microwave-accelerated decrystallization

The present invention relates to methods for rapid crystallization of amino acids, drug molecules, proteins and DNA/peptides. One method for rapid crystallization of functional group-containing molecules selected from the group consisting of amino acids, drug molecules, proteins and DNA/peptides includes (A) providing at least one metal or metal oxide in particulate or thin film form to provide (a) selective nucleation sites for crystallization of the functional group-containing molecules due to interactions of their functional groups and metal surfaces or engineered metal surfaces and (b) a microwave-transparent medium to create a thermal gradient between the metal surfaces or engineered metal surfaces and a warmer solution containing functional group-containing molecules to be crystallized, and (B) conducting microwave heating to cause the functional group-containing molecules to be crystallized.

Metal-assisted and microwave-accelerated evaporative crystallization

The present invention relates to systems and methods using microwave accelerated surface plasmonics for the detection of target species. The system has a metallic surface and the system is exposed to microwave energy for increasing detection time and/or the reaction kinetics of the target species and other interacting participants in the system so that plasmonic emissions from the metallic surface alone or coupled with emissions from a luminescing entity are detected.

Microwave-accelerated metal-enhanced detection method

The present invention relates to methods for functionally modifying a polymeric surface for subsequent deposition of metallic particles and/or films, wherein the polymeric surface is modified by increasing hydroxyl and/or amine functional groups thereby providing an activated polymeric surface for deposition of metallic particles to form a fluorescence sensing device. The device can be used for metal-enhanced fluorescence of fluorophores positioned above the metallic particles that can be readily applied to diagnostic or sensing applications of metal-enhanced fluorescence.
