A network device processes packets transiting the device using successive deep packet inspection (DPI) rules. For each rule, the device attempts to apply the DPI rule to each packet, applies the DPI rule to each packet for which the attempt is successful, determines a probability that the attempt is successful across a plurality of packets, determines an average computational cost of applying the rule across a plurality of packets, and determines a merit of the DPI rule based on the average computational cost and the probability. The device reorders the successive DPI rules in an order of decreasing merit (computational cost), and processes new packets using the optimized DPI rules. The method of re-arranging DPI rules provides significant saving for network devices including mobile gateways in terms of computational cost.

Interactive dynamic ordering of deep packet inspection rules

Various embodiments are described to enable multiple, independent communication networks to share in an autonomous and dynamic manner unlicensed wireless resources. Generally, this involves determining that a first network node () is using at least a portion of a wireless resource to provide network service to at least one remote unit (). A second network node (), under the control of a different network operator than the first node and desiring to use the wireless resource, sends the first network node, a request to relinquish use of at least a portion of the wireless resource. The second network node sends this request wirelessly, perhaps using the wireless resource itself. If the first network node grants the request, the second node may then begin using at least a portion of the relinquished resource to provide network service.

Dynamic sharing of wireless resources among different communication networks

A method and apparatus includes a scheduling entity () for scheduling and transmitting the superframe () across a communication network (). The controller () coupled with scheduling entity () groups the subscriber unit () into one of the plurality of groups. The scheduler entity () assigns a coding scheme for each group and encodes each frame of the superframe () based upon the assigned coding scheme for the group, to which the frame is to be transmitted. The transceiver () coupled with controller () via hardware interface () receives the encoded superframe and transmits the superframe to the plurality of subscriber units in the communication network ().

Method and apparatus for transmitting a superframe across a communication network

A mobile communications system includes a first base station to service a first set of connections from a first set of mobile communications devices to a communications network. A set of neighboring base stations is in communication with the first base station. In an embodiment of the invention, the first base station prioritizes the first set of connections according to first predetermined criteria and prioritizes the set of neighboring base stations according to second predetermined criteria. The prioritization lists are used in deterministic ways to alleviate potential congestion in backhaul links and optimize the overall performance of system and improved quality of service.

Method and apparatus for handoff control in mobile communications systems

Various embodiments are described to address the need for an apparatus and method that improves upon known handoff techniques, such as Mobile IP and Fast Mobile IP, to improve the mobility experience of an end user. OSI layer 2-originated indications of a handoff being imminent (), a link down for handoff (), and a new link up after handoff () are introduced. These indications can be used by applications (such as real-time/streaming applications on the mobile ()) to take suitable proactive measures prior to an actual handoff. Examples of such measures include the buffering of data to be used during the handoff interval in a way that improves the seamless mobility experience of the end user.

Method and apparatus for link layer assisted handoff

A base station has a transmission element to wirelessly transmit at least one data frame. The at least one data frame has a predetermined uplink allocation and a predetermined downlink allocation. A detection element detects a congestion condition. When the congestion condition is detected, the transmission element transmits a request to at least one neighboring base station for an expansion of the predetermined uplink allocation or the predetermined downlink allocation. A reception element receives a signal from the at least one neighboring base station. A processing element expand the one of the predetermined uplink allocation or the predetermined downlink allocation by a specified amount in response to the signal indicating the specified amount for a mutually agreed time, or number of symbols or frames.

Method and apparatus for dynamic adjustment of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing during congested conditions

An apparatus and method for performing Mobile/IP handoff between different access technologies. Associated with each access technology are two thresholds, a Low Water Mark and a High Water Mark. The method uses these water marks to its access technology selection in a particular environment. Using the method, a mobile noderemains on its preferred network when the signal strength on the preferred network (interface) is above the low water mark. When the signal strength on the preferred network drops below the high water mark, the method calculates the low water mark for the network. When the signal strength on the preferred network drops below the low water mark (LWM), the method initiates handoff to the next available network that meets certain conditions. The method initiates handoff back to the preferred network when the signal strength measurement on the preferred network is again above the high water mark.

A dynamic channel management method ( ) determines which base station ( ) is a least utilized base station for servicing a channel request made by a subscriber unit ( ). The least utilized base station is based on what base station ( ) is more available to handle the channel request. If the least utilized base station can handle the channel request, it assigns and grants a channel to the subscriber unit ( ). Otherwise, the channel request is blocked or denied. The dynamic channel management method ( ) provides a systematic way for dynamically matching the available channel resources with the actual demand as a function of time. This enables the system ( ) to handle significantly more traffic than with pure static channel management schemes.

The present invention provides a method/protocol (400, 800) and device (600; 700) for transmitting a synchronous stream of information, in a wireless, centrally controlled communication system.
