A liquid crystal display includes: a first substrate; a second substrate overlapping the first substrate and spaced apart therefrom; a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate and including liquid crystal molecules; a first alignment layer between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer; and a plurality of protrusions between the first alignment layer and the liquid crystal layer, wherein the first alignment layer includes a photoinitiator, wherein the plurality of protrusions include a polymerization product of the photoinitiator, a reactive mesogen, and a vertical alignment additive, and the vertical alignment additive may be less reactive than the photoinitiator.

A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a first alignment film disposed on the first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first alignment film and the second substrate. The first substrate has a surface curved in a first direction and the second substrate has a surface curved in the first direction. The first alignment film includes a polymerization initiator and a polymer chain that is a copolymer of a dianhydride-based compound and a diamine-based compound. The polymer chain includes a main chain including a repeating unit including an imide group, a first side chain, including a vertical align group, bonded to the main chain, and a second side chain bonded to the main chain. The functional group includes a biphenyl group or a terphenyl group.

Liquid crystal display device and method for manufacturing the same

Each of the first subpixel electrode and the second, subpixel electrode includes a first subregion and a second subregion. At least one of the first subregion and the second subregion includes a vertical stem, a horizontal stem extending from a middle of the vertical stem, and a plurality of minute branches laterally extending in a diagonal direction from the horizontal stem. The plurality of minute branches laterally extending from the horizontal stem are alternately branched with reference to the horizontal stem.
