A group of ternary alloys of aluminum-lithium and magnesium or copper further including at least one additive element such as zirconium, chromium and/or manganese. These alloys have an improved combination of properties such as strength, ductility and weldability and in some cases improved tensile properties at cryogenic temperatures.

Aluminum-lithium alloys

A family of alloys based upon aluminum-copper-magnesium-silver alloys to which lithium has been added, within specified ranges, exhibits superior ambient- and elevated-temperature strength, superior ductility at ambient and elevated temperatures, extrudability, forgeability, weldability, and an unexpected natural aging response.

Ultra high strength weldable aluminum-lithium alloys

Intermetallics capable of use as structural elements, exhibiting relatively high ductility and low brittleness, comprise ternary and quaternary TiAl.sub.3 alloys of the general formulae Al--Ti--M and Al--Ti--M--M', wherein M is selected from Cu, Ni, and Fe, M' is selected from V, Nb, and Ta. Such materials exhibit cubic, Ll.sub.2 crystal structures.

Multicomponent, low density cubic L1.sub.2 aluminides

An in situ process is provided for producing a composite comprising a refractory material dispersed in a solid matrix. A molten composition comprising a matrix liquid, and at least one refractory carbide-forming component are provided, and a gas is introduced into the molten composition. A reactive component is also provided for reaction with the refractory material-forming component. The refractory material-forming component and reactive component react to form a refractory material dispersed in the matrix liquid, and the liquid composite is cooled to form a solid composite material. In one embodiment, the reactive component is a carbonaceous component in the form of a component of the gas, a solid in the gas or the molten composition, or both. The carbonaceous component is provided for reaction with a refractory carbide-forming component to yield a refractory carbide. In a preferred embodiment, the matrix liquid is molten aluminum and the refractory carbide-forming component is tantalum. In other embodiments, refractory borides or refractory nitrides are formed in situ in the matrix liquid.
