A reforming assembly for simultaneously reforming and reprofiling a bottom portion of a metallic container is provided. The reforming assembly generally includes a roller block having a pair of reform rollers and two pairs of outside reprofile rollers. A biasing means is operably interconnected to the reform rollers, such that the reform rollers extend to contact the inner surface of the bottom portion of the container when contacted by the bottom portion of the container. The outside reprofile rollers engage with an outer surface of the bottom portion of the container. The container reforming assembly is rotated, while maintaining the container body in a static non-rotating position, to create an internal can profile on the inner surface by the pair of reform rollers, and an external can profile on the outer surface by the outside reprofile rollers.

Method and apparatus for reforming and reprofiling a bottom portion of a container

Movement of rollers used for reforming an inner wall of a metal container bottom such as an aluminum beverage container is controlled at least partially using a rigid link coupled to other components of a reformer apparatus by a pin having a stepped profile. The stepped-profile pin preferably defines first and second shoulder regions. Undesired spaces or gaps in the pin-axial or thrust direction are reduced or eliminated by closely-positioning bushing flanges or thrust washers adjacent the shoulders.

A beverage container with increased strength includes a generally cylindrical sidewall that is disposed around a vertical axis, and a bottom. The bottom provides a supporting surface and includes a bottom recess portion that is disposed radially inwardly of the supporting surface. The bottom recess portion includes a concave domed panel that is disposed a positional distance above the supporting surface by a dome positioning portion of this bottom recess portion. The domed panel includes a portion thereof with a curvature in the range wherein increases in the curvature decrease the static dome reversal pressure; and the dome positioning portion includes first and second parts thereof that are disposed at different radial distances from the vertical axis and that provide increases in both roll-out resistance and static dome reversal pressure. In various embodiments the first and second parts are circumferential, arcuate, at longitudinal; and, in at least some embodiments an increase in cumulative drop height is achieved as well as increases in both roll-out resistance and static dome reversal pressure.

Beverage container with increased bottom strength

An aluminum one-piece container body, defining a sidewall and bottom, has a substantially hemispherical or otherwise convex, preferably curvilinear, surface surrounding a central concave panel. A plurality of feet extend downwardly from the convex region. The convex region provides strength advantages associated with containing pressurized material. A concave panel accommodates changes in differential pressures such as arising from pasteurization or other heating. The feet are preferably configured to provide substantial stackability and conveyability as well as support stability for the container.

A metal drawn and ironed container body having a sidewall, an annular neck integrally formed with the sidewall and extending upwardly and inwardly from an upper end of the sidewall, and a bottom integrally formed with and disposed adjacent a lower end of the sidewall. The bottom includes an annular convex support, an annular transition wall interconnecting the lower end of the sidewall to the convex support, and a generally concave center panel extending upwardly and inwardly relative to the convex support. The transition wall includes a first convex annular portion extending generally downwardly and inwardly from the lower end of the sidewall, a first concave annular portion extending generally downwardly and inwardly from the first convex annular portion, a second convex annular portion extending downwardly and inwardly from the first concave annular portion, and a second concave annular portion extending downwardly and inwardly from the second convex annular portion.

Apparatus (110, 180, 270, 330, or 360) either reforms a circumferential part (86) of a container body (11) radially outward to form a container body (64), or reforms a plurality of circumferentially-spaced parts (74) of the bottom recess portion (25) of a container body (11) radially outward to form a container body (62). The apparatus (110, 180, 270, 330, or 360) includes a body (158, 230, 288, 332, or 365) and has a tooling element attached thereto which may be a roller (172, 246, 302, or 350) or a swaging element (392). Means is included for providing relative transverse movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, 346, or 392). Means (160, 222, 296, or 332) is provided for providing relative rotary movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, or 346) in all embodiments except the apparatus (360) in which the bottom recess portion (25) is swaged. The method includes providing relative transverse movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, 346, or 392), and in all embodiments except the one (360) in which reworking is achieved by swaging, relative rotary movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, or 346) is provided.

Apparatus and method for strengthening bottom of container

Apparatus (110, 180, 270, 330, or 360) either reforms a circumferential part (86) of a container body (11) radially outward to form a container body (64), or reforms a plurality of circumferentially-spaced parts (74) of the bottom recess portion (25) of a container body (11) radially outward to form a container body (62). The apparatus (110, 180, 270, 330, or 360) includes a body (158, 230, 288, 332, or 365) and has a tooling element attached thereto which may be a roller (172, 246, 302, or 350) or a swaging element (392). Means is included for providing relative transverse movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, 346, or 392). Means (160, 222, 296, or 332) is provided for providing relative rotary movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, or 346 ) in all embodiments except the apparatus ( 360 ) in which the bottom recess portion (25) is swaged. The method includes providing relative transverse movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, 346, or 392), and in all embodiments except the one (360) in which reworking is achieved by swaging, relative rotary movement between the container body (11) and the tooling element (172, 246, 302, or 346) is provided.

A drawn and ironed container body is provided having a plurality of alternating inward and outward segments around the circumference of the stripper bulge and extending through at least a portion of the longitudinal extent of the bulge whereby the minimum column strength of a sampling of such containers is substantially increased. An apparatus for reforming a drawn and ironed container body is also provided, comprising inner and outer members positionable in opposing relation with each other, with at least a portion of the bulge positioned therebetween, the inner and outer members being capable of radial movement relative to each other to form alternating inward and outward segments around the circumference of the bulge and extending through at least a portion of the longitudinal extent thereof. In one embodiment, the inner member is a mandrel for supporting container body and secured to a circular turret and the outer member comprises an arcuate member having a rigid plate and a resilient layer for contacting a portion a container body on the mandrel. As the container simultaneously rotates about its longitudinal axis and revolves around the center axis of the turret, compressive force against the resilient layer forces metal to conform to inward and outward segments in the mandrel.

Drawn and ironed container and apparatus and method for forming same

A container with improved strength includes a cylindrical sidewall that is disposed around a vertical axis, and a bottom. The bottom of the container provides a supporting surface and includes a bottom recess portion that is disposed radially inwardly of the supporting surface. The bottom recess portion includes a center panel, and a dome positioning portion that positions the center panel above the supporting surface. The dome positioning portion includes a first part that is disposed at a first radial distance from the vertical axis and adjacent part that is disposed at a different radial distance from the vertical axis. In the container, a plurality of the adjacent parts are arcuately disposed are circumferentially spaced around the dome positioning portion and are interspersed with a plurality of the first parts. In the container the adjacent part is disposed circumferentially around the dome positioning portion at one height from the supporting surface, and the first part is disposed circumferentially around the dome positioning portion at a different height from the supporting surface.
