A switching system () at a customer premises communicates information associated with one or more subscribers. The switching system () includes multiple subscriber line ports () for communicating xDSL signals with subscribers, the xDSL signals containing both data signals and POTS voice signals. A logical port () communicates data signals and packetized voice signals from the subscribers with a central office, the switching system () converting between the POTS voice signals of the subscriber lines () and the packetized voice signals of the logical port (). A LAN port () communicates data signals with a server complex () using a LAN () to provide data services to the subscribers. The switching system () may include a switch () that receives voice signals on a first virtual circuit (VC), switches the voice signals out of the switching system () on the first VC, and also communicates received data signals for routing. A router () within the switching system () may receive the data signals from the switch () on a second VC, determine a third VC for the data signals, and route the data signals to the switch () on the third VC for communication out of the switching system () on the third VC.

A first switching system () coupled to the connecting link () communicates remote voice signals () and remote data signals () using the connecting link (). A second switching system () coupled to the connecting link () includes an interface () to receive the remote voice signals () and the remote data signals () using the connecting link (). The second switching system () also includes subscriber line ports () for receiving local voice signals () and local data signals () from subscribers. The interface () of the second switching system () selectively communicates the highest priority available signals using an outgoing link, voice signals () having higher priority than data signals (). In a more particular embodiment, the remote voice signals () may have higher priority than the local voice signals ().

A network (10) includes a repeater (12) that can service data devices that operate using different communications protocols. The data devices (18, 20, 22) couple to the ports (34) of the repeater (12), and operate using a first communications protocol in a first domain (14). The data devices (26, 28, 30) also couple to the ports (34) of the repeater (12) and operate using a second communications protocol in a second domain (16). Information on the operation of a port (34) may be displayed using one port indicator (202) or two port indicators (300, 302).
