The present invention concerns the field of stereoscopic vision systems and more particularly the management of the position of the focal plane in a stereoscopic scene. The invention aims to propose a method for managing the focal plane within a stereoscopic image or a sequence of stereoscopic images. A translation of the right and left images is effected in order to place the focal plane in front of the scene viewed. Advantageously, the depth of the major objects of the scene is estimated by a division of the images into a plurality of zones and estimation of the depth of each of the zones. The depth of the focal plane is then calculated so that most of the scene is behind the focal plane.

Device and method for managing the position of the focal plane in a stereoscopic scene

The present invention concerns the field of stereoscopic photography devices and more precisely calibration thereof. The invention proposes a method for calibrating a stereoscopic photography device that calculates a set of correction parameters for the images. These parameters are classed according to an order of importance. The first-order correction parameters are estimated first, the second-order correction parameters secondly. Advantageously, the first-order parameters are refined by taking account of the estimation values of the second-order parameters. Advantageously, a measurement of the relevance of the scene is carried out before the actual calibration.

Method for calibrating a stereoscopic photography device

A method and device for compressing at least a portion of a video image for transmission in a video stream such that the compressed portion either includes or does not include an encoded residual depending on whether including the residual would be advantageous in terms of data rate and distortion. The size of the video stream and the resources needed for decompression at a receiver are optimized through encoding only the most relevant data in the video stream that is to be transmitted. If the information provided by a residual is insufficiently relevant, the residual is either not encoded or is not included in the transmitted video stream. Factors associated with a residual are only encoded and transmitted if use of the residual would limit the distortion in a satisfactory manner and if the encoding of the associated factors does not generate too high of a data rate. The disclosed method and device make it possible to minimize and optimize resources needed by a decoder by a receiver of the transmitted video stream.

Method and device for optimizing the compression of a video stream

A method and device for compressing at least a portion of a video image such that a compressed video stream includes, or does not include, an encoding of a residual depending on whether it is advantageous to do so in terms of costs in rate and in distortion. The size of the video stream and resources needed for decompression are optimized through encoding only the most relevant data in the video stream. If the information added by the residual is insufficiently relevant or useful, the residual is not encoded. Factors associated with the residual are only encoded if use of the residual limits the distortion in a satisfactory manner and if the encoding of the associated factors does not generate too high a rate. Use of the method makes it possible to optimize resources needed for a decoder by optimizing the encoding of the residual.

The process of compression of a block of a size L.times.H of a sequence of images comprises, in a repetitive manner, for said block: a search step, in one of the images of the sequence of images, for the zone L.times.H pixels the most similar to said block; a step of determining whether the resemblance between said zone and said block responds to predetermined criteria; if said resemblance responds to said criteria, a step of storing the motion vector which indicates the distance between the block and the most similar zone found; if said resemblance does not respond to said criteria, and if the block does not have a predetermined minimum size, a step of cutting out said block into sub-blocks and a supplemental repetition, for each of said sub-blocks, and if said resemblance does not respond to said criteria, and if the block has a predetermined minimum size, a step of storing the block in the course of which the block is compressed without reference to a reference image.
