An adjustable monopole antenna especially intended for the mobile terminals. The adjusting circuit () of the antenna is located between the radiator () and the antenna port of a radio device and forms, together with the antenna feed conductor (), a feed circuit. This circuit comprises an adjustable reactance between the feed conductor and the ground in series with the feed conductor or in both of those places. For example, the feed conductor can be connected by a multi-way switch to one of alternative transmission lines, which are typically short-circuited or open at their tail end and shorter than the quarter wave, each line acting for a certain reactance. The antenna operating band covers at a time only a part of the frequency range used by one or two radio systems, in which case the antenna matching is easier to arrange than of a real broadband antenna. The space required for both the radiator and the adjusting circuit is relatively small. There is no need to arrange a coupling to the radiator for the antenna adjusting, which means a simpler antenna structure and thus savings in production costs.

Adjustable antenna and methods

An internal antenna especially aimed at flat radio devices. The antenna () comprises a planar radiator () with a branch () for forming a lower operating band for the antenna and a second branch () for forming an upper operating band. The branches typically form a frame-like pattern. There remains a slot () between the branches, opening to the outer edge of the radiator approximately in the middle of the edge running in the direction of the end of the circuit board () and being outside the circuit board as seen from above. The omnidirectional radiation of the antenna on its upper operating band improves as compared to the corresponding, known antennas, and its efficiency improves, because the average antenna gain increases.

Internal antenna and methods

A planar antenna structure intended to be used in small portable radio devices and a radio device using an antenna structure according to the invention. The radiating element () of the antenna is a conductive part in the cover of the radio device or a conductive coating attached to the cover. The radiating element is fed electro-magnetically by a parallel planar feed element () connected to the antenna port and located near the radiating element, between it and the ground plane (). Between the feed element and antenna port there is a feed circuit () to provide matching for the antenna and, if necessary, forming an additional operating band. The radiating element need not be shaped to set the resonating frequencies or match the antenna. Instead, it can be designed relatively freely, based on the desired external appearance of the device, for example. Moreover the antenna requires relatively little space within the device.

Planar antenna structure and radio device

A radiating antenna element intended to be used in small-sized radio devices, and a radio device having an antenna element according to the invention. The antenna element is part of the covers of a radio device. The antenna element may be conductive throughout, or it may comprise a dielectric portion and a conductive portion, which constitute a single integral component. The radiating portion of the antenna element is relatively large, e.g. in a foldable phone () the antenna element () may comprise the whole cover of a foldable part () except for the front side. The radiating element is advantageously fed electromagnetically through a feed element. As the radiating element is relatively large and is located on the outer surface of the device, the radiation characteristics of the antenna are good, and the space required by the antenna inside the device is relatively small.

Antenna element for a radio device

An antenna intended to be used in a small-sized and flat radio device, and to a radio device which has an antenna according to the invention. The base element of the antenna is a monopole-type conductor () internal to the device. This conductor may be designed such that the harmonic nearest to the fundamental resonating frequency can be utilized in providing an upper operating band. In addition to the base element the antenna structure comprises a parasitic element () which functions as both an auxiliary radiator and antenna matching element. Matching is optimized using an inductive component () which connects the parasitic element to signal ground. The antenna gain achieved is considerably higher than that of known antenna structures occupying the same space (h), and the antenna matching is improved, compared to known internal monopole antennas.

Antenna for flat radio device

An arrangement designed for radio phones for integrating a mechanical structure of the antenna head of the phone. The mechanical structures of an antenna and a speaker of the radio phone are integrated so that a given planar component radiates both radio waves and sound waves. The radiator component () comprises a layer () of a material, a shape of which can be controlled by means of a voltage. The sound waves, i.e. fluctuation of the air pressure are thus generated by causing the thickness or position of the layer to fluctuate according to the control voltage. The antenna head of the radio phone becomes more compact than in the prior art, and it takes up less space because the antenna and the speaker utilize same structural elements.

Arrangement for integrating a radio phone structure

An arrangement for connecting an additional antenna to a portable radio device (RD) having an internal planar antenna. Energy for the additional antenna is taken from the near field of the planar antenna, the coupling elements being provided by conductors () located outside the covering of the radio device and following the conductive branches (B, B) of the radiating plane (RPL) of the planar antenna. The arrangement further comprises a conductive plate () located in front of and parallel to the ground plane (GND) in the radio device to take energy from the field of the ground plane. The inner conductor of the cable () for the additional antenna is galvanically connected to the conductors placed over the planar antenna, and the sheath is galvanically connected to the conductive plate () near the connection point of the inner conductor.

Arrangement for connecting additional antenna to radio device

An internal planar antenna for small radio apparatuses. The ground plane () of the planar antenna is shaped such that it improves the matching of the antenna. The shaping may be done by means of one or more slots () in the ground plane. The slot suitably changes the electrical length of the ground plane as viewed from the short-circuit point (S) so that the ground plane will function as a radiator in an operating band of the antenna. Also the slot () in the ground plane can be arranged to function as an additional radiator in an operating band of the antenna. Antenna gain will increase as the matching is improved, and the upper band of a dual band antenna, for example, can be made broader.

Internal antenna

A small and foldable radio device antenna and a radio device which has an antenna according to an embodiment of the invention. The radiating element in the antenna is a conductor having an outline shaped substantially like a rectangle and defining a plane which is perpendicular to the ground plane situated on the circuit board of the radio device. The radiating element fits inside the foldable device in the perpendicular position. The element is connected to the radio device only by its feed point. Resonating frequencies of the element can be arranged by shaping the element, and by means of discrete components. The matching of the antenna is arranged by providing an appropriate distance between the radiating element and ground plane. In an operating situation, an antenna gain is achieved which is considerably higher than that of a PIFA of equal height.

Antenna for foldable radio device

The invention relates to planar antennas the structural components of which include a parasitic element. The antenna structure comprises a PIFA-type structure () to be placed inside the covers of a mobile station. The PIFA is fed parasitically e.g. through a conductive strip () placed on the same insulating board. The feed conductor () of the whole antenna structure is in galvanic contact with this feed element; a short-circuit point the feed element doesn't have. The feed element () also serves as an auxiliary radiator. The resonance frequencies of the antenna elements or their parts are arranged according to need so as to overlap, to be close to each other or to be relatively wide apart. The structure may also comprise a whip element in connection with the feed element. According to the invention, a relatively simple structure provides a reliable dual resonance and, hence, a relatively wideband antenna when the resonances are close to each other. Moreover, no polarization rotation takes place in the antenna radiation inside the frequency band realized through the dual resonance.

Planar antenna structure

An arrangement for enhancing electrical isolation between antennas in antenna structures comprising at least two antennas, and a radio device applying the arrangement. The interfering antenna comprises components causing substantial degradation in radiation characteristics in the operating band of another antenna. For example, a PIFA () may comprise, instead of a short-circuit conductor, a conductive structure () having a parallel resonance in the operating band of another antenna (). Mutual interference of radio parts using separate antennas can be made relatively small without electrical isolation arrangements between antenna elements. Moreover, the invention makes antenna filter design easier and reduces disadvantages caused by antenna filters.

Dual antenna and radio device

Internal planar antenna especially applicable to mobile communication devices. A PIFA-type planar antenna is fed coaxially-like. This means that the feed conductor ( ) of a radiating plane ( ) is surrounded by a shield conductor ( ) galvanically connected to the ground plane (GND) for the length between these planes. The shield conductor at the same time serves as a short circuit conductor for the antenna. The antenna is matched by means of a matching slot ( ) going between the connection points of the feed and short circuit conductors, and/or of the shape of the short circuit conductor. A feed arrangement at issue increases antenna gain without increasing the SAR value of the antenna.

Planar antenna

The invention relates to a multiband antenna which finds utility particularly in mobile stations. The antenna structure includes a PIFA-type antenna positioned inside the covers of a mobile station, which antenna includes a slot radiator ( ). In the planar element there is a second slot ( ) so that, viewed from a feed point (F), two radiating conductive branches (B B ) of different lengths are formed. Each of the three radiators has a separate operating band of its own. The structure also includes a whip element ( ) movable with respect to the PIFA part. When the whip element is pulled out, its lower end is galvanically coupled with the shorter branch of the planar element, with its relatively narrow side branch (B ). The whip enhances the operation of the antenna especially in the lowest operating band. The influence of the pulled-out whip on the location of the uppermost operating band is compensated for by a third slot ( ) in the planar element. Matching for the whip element is provided by shaping the conductive patterns existing in the planar element in any case. The structure is relatively simple and economical to fabricate. A good three-band planar antenna can be provided without a whip element as well.

Multiband antenna

A double-action antenna structure includes, e.g. a PIFA-type antenna inside the casing of a mobile station, a coupling element and a moveable whip element. The coupling element is a relatively small conductive element between the radiating plane and ground plane of the PIFA, galvanically isolated from the radiating plane and ground plane. When the whip element is retracted, it has no significant coupling to the PIFA parts. When the whip element is extended, its lower end is galvanically connected to the coupling element so that a significant electromagnetic coupling is established between the whip element and the radiating plane of the PIFA. Thus the whip element is fed through the PIFA without being in galvanic contact with it. The coupling element further provides for the matching of the whip element. The internal and external antennas may be designed and optimized relatively independently of each other.

Double-action antenna

The invention relates to double-action antenna structures. The structure comprises an antenna inside the covering of a mobile station, a switch (SW) and a whip, element ( ) movable in relation to the former two. The internal antenna comprises two elements the first of which ( ) is connected to the feed conductor ( ) of the whole antenna structure and the second to the signal ground ( ). When the whip element is retracted, the said switch galvanically interconnects the elements of the internal antenna. Thus only the internal antenna functions and the whip has no practical significance. When the whip element is extended, its lower end disconnects, by means of the switch, the elements of the internal antenna, and the whip element itself is connected in series with the first element. Thus, a radiating element is provided by the series connection ( ) of the whip and the first element, and the shorted element ( ) of the internal antenna has no practical significance. The first element further provides for the matching of the whip element. The antenna structure may have one or more operating bands. In the structure according to the invention the length of the whip element may be chosen relatively freely because the electrical length of the structure can always be made suitable by means of the internal antenna element connected in series with the whip element. No mechanical parts or components are needed for the matching of the whip element.
