The present invention relates to a light emitting diode (LED) backlight having a plurality of LED strips, in which driving current supplied to each of the plurality of LED strips is adjusted according to measured differences in chromaticity coordinates between the actual light chromaticity and brightness output by each LED strip and a desired light chromaticity and brightness of each LED so that the LED backlight generates light of a desired color with a uniform brightness, and methods of operating the same.

Color control of multi-zone LED backlight

A light guide plate structure, for use with a back light module of a liquid crystal display, has a top surface, a bottom surface, a first end portion, a second end portion which is opposite the first end portion, and a plurality of substantially paralleled V-shape grooves formed on the bottom surface and extending from the first end portion to the second end portion. Each of said V-shape grooves comprises a top angle with a continuous variation from the first end portion to the second end portion. The present invention gets rid of the dark areas of an LCD that appear adjacent to one of the end portions in conventional models, thus enhancing the uniformity in its brightness levels.

The illumination device of the backlight module comprises a light source and a lens, disposed over the light source with a predetermined gap therebetween. The lens comprises a bottom surface as an incident surface, a pair of upper refracting surfaces, and a pair of lateral refracting surfaces. The upper refracting surfaces form an included angle substantially in a range of about 80&#xb0; to about 120&#xb0;.

Backlight module and illumination device thereof

A backlight module includes a light source, a light guide disposed on one side of the light source, a reflector disposed under the light guide, a lower diffuser disposed on the light guide, and a brightness enhancement film, which is disposed on the lower diffuser and includes a main part and several prism structures disposed side by side on a main part plane of the main part. Each prism structure includes first to third triangular prisms. The second triangular prism is adjacent to one side of the first triangular prism, and an adjacent angle adjacent to a base angle of the first triangular prism is a right angle. A backlight module including a diffuser, a reflector, a side light source, a prism lens and a TIR (total internal reflection) lens is disclosed. The reflector is disposed under the diffuser. The side light source is disposed on a side between the diffuser and the reflector. The prism lens is disposed between the side light source and the reflector. The TIR lens is disposed on a bottom of the diffuser and adjacent to the side light source.

The present invention uses different frequencies to drive the LED strips in the back-lighting source so that the spatial uniformity of the back-lighting source as well as the color levels in the source can be monitored and adjusted. Each individual strip is assigned to a different frequency. Alternatively, the strips are divided into groups and each group is assigned to a different frequency. A group may comprise two or more strips. Furthermore, some groups may have more strips than the other groups and the number of LEDs in one strip may be different from the number in other strips. The brightness uniformity and the color levels in the back-lighting source are sensed by one or more groups of color sensors in R, G and B. The assignment of driving frequencies can be based on the location of the strips.

Controlling method and system for LED-based backlighting source

The provided backlight module includes a reflection sheet, a retardation plate, a light-guide plate, a light source, and a sub-wavelength grating plate. The retardation plate is set over the reflection sheet. The light-guide plate is disposed over the retardation plate, and the surface of the light-guide plate comprises a plurality of micro-structures. The light source is set beside the light-guide plate, and the light from the light source transferring into the light-guide plate passes through one of its end and out through the micro-structures. The sub-wavelength grating plate is disposed over the light-guide plate: (i) to transmit light having a polarization oriented parallel to the rows of bars and to define a transmitted light, corresponding to the light, as P-ray, and (ii) to reflect light having a polarization oriented perpendicular to the rows of bars and to define a reflected light, corresponding to the light, as S-ray.
