Method and apparatus for a low maintenance, high reliability on-site electrolytic generator incorporating automatic cell monitoring for contaminant film buildup, as well as automatically removing or cleaning the contaminant film. This method and apparatus preferably does not require human intervention to clean. For high current density cells, cleaning is preferably performed by reversing the polarity of the electrodes and applying a lower current density to the electrodes, preferably by adjusting the salinity or brine concentration of the electrolyte while keeping the voltage constant. Electrolyte flow preferably comprises water and brine flows which are preferably separately monitored and automatically adjusted. For bipolar cells, flow between modules arranged in parallel is preferably approximately equally distributed between modules and between intermediate electrodes within each module.

Electrolytic on-site generator

Disclosed in the present invention are methods and apparatuses for the electrochemical conversion of halide ion containing brines into halogen based disinfection solutions while the impact of scale formation on electrochemical system operations. This is accomplished by controllably modifying the brine with one or more of halide ions, a halogen stabilization compound, an acid component, or a buffering component. These chemical modifications of the brine allow for the production of stabilized 10 halogen solutions, which can then be used as disinfectants. The present invention is especially useful in the production of halogen-based biocides from flowback or produced waters resulting from oil and gas production, but can be applied to any halide ion containing water stream, including reject water from reverse osmosis filtration processes or ocean water, that contains ammonia.

The oxidant is preferably chlorine-based and generated on-site. The intensity of the radiation is higher than typical AOP processes. Various process parameters, such as the pH and/or flow rate of the contaminated fluid, and/or the relative intensities of various UV wavelength sources, are varied in response to measuring quality indicators.

The present invention is directed to any electrolytic cell, including but not limited to upflow electrolytic cells that comprise parallel electrodes in a vertical orientation. Fluid control strips are preferably added between the anode and cathode electrodes to control flow of fluid and gas bubbles generated between the electrodes in order to avoid the detrimental effects of gas bubbles on the conductivity of the fluid solution, and thereby increase production and operational efficiency of the electrolytic cell.

Low maintenance on-site generator

A radioactive power source resident in an IC package is provided. The power source is a stand-alone device, fabricated separately from the IC or other device that is eventually attached to the package. The power source may be attached to the packaging substrate or to another portion of the package such as the package's top member or lid. The source can be directly coupled to the mounted IC, for example via package leads, or coupled to package pins. By coupling the source to the package pins, the system provides even greater flexibility. Although the power source can use any of a variety of different cell designs, preferably an icosahdedral boride based beta cell is used.
