In one embodiment, a method for sensing an image of a scene includes receiving incident light at a image sensing device including an array of at least two regions of pixel elements, providing one or more control parameters where each of the control parameters modifies the sensitivity of the pixel elements, generating control signals for the one or more control parameter for each region of pixel elements where the sensitivity of the pixel elements is varied on a region by region basis. In another embodiment, method for sensing an image of a scene includes generating control signals for controlling two or more control parameters for controlling the pixel elements of an entire array to provide continuous fine grain control of the sensitivity of the pixel elements.

Image sensor with sensitivity control and sensitivity based wide dynamic range

An image capture method in a digital image sensor implements a continuous sampling technique with a massively parallel thermometer-code analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) technique to generate pixel data having an intrinsic to an ultra-high dynamic range. In one embodiment, the method includes, after an initial exposure period, sampling pixel intensity values at the pixel elements of an image sensor at multiple sampling intervals within a snapshot of a scene; providing an analog reference voltage corresponding to a decrementing digital count value; and comparing the pixel intensity values to the analog reference voltage at each of the multiple sampling intervals. If the pixel intensity value of a first pixel element is less than the analog reference voltage at a first exposure time, an output signal having a first value is generated and the digital count value is recorded as pixel data associated with the first pixel element.

Digital image capture having an ultra-high dynamic range

A video imaging system includes a digital image sensor for performing image capture operations and a digital image processor for performing image processing operations. The digital image sensor includes a sensor array outputting digital pixel data, an image buffer for storing the pixel data, a first processor and a first interface circuit for transferring the pixel data onto a pixel bus. The digital image processor includes a second interface circuit coupled to receive the pixel data from the pixel bus, a frame buffer coupled to store the pixel data, an image processing pipeline for processing the pixel data stored in the frame buffer into video data, and a second processor. The digital image sensor and the digital image processor transfer control information over a control interface bus and the digital image sensor performs the image capture operations independent of the image processing operations performed by the digital image processor.

Video imaging system including a digital image sensor and a digital signal processor

A system-on-chip imaging system includes an image sensor of a two-dimensional array of pixel elements providing pixel data representing an image of a scene, a data memory for storing pixel codewords whereby at least some of the pixel codewords are indicative of the pixel data, a programmable lookup table for providing LUT codewords as output data, and a processing unit for receiving LUT codewords from the lookup table and generating output image data. In operation, a first pixel codeword stored in the data memory is used to index the lookup table for causing the lookup table to provide a respective LUT codeword to the processing unit. The processing unit operates to perform one or more image processing functions in response to the LUT codeword. The lookup table can be programmed to perform a variety of image processing functions, including defective pixel correction, CDS subtraction, privacy masking and dark signal subtraction.

Methods of detecting relative misalignment between a color filter array and a sensor array in a color sensor array. The present invention provides methods for detecting and compensating for shifts of one or more rows and/or columns between a color filter array and a sensor array that may occur during the color sensor array fabrication process. The present invention also enables the use of color sensor arrays in which the alignment of a color filter array relative to the corresponding sensor array is unknown. In one embodiment, a detectable pattern of one or more pixels (e.g., pixels having black filters) is introduced into the periphery of the color sensor array. The position of the pattern is detected and color image data are processed with respect to the detected position. The invention is very cost effective and enables the use of image sensors with misaligned color filter arrays just as if they were manufactured correctly. The benefits of the present invention include (1) increased manufacturing yields and, therefore, lower per unit manufacturing cost and (2) higher reliability of image sensors configured with color filter arrays.

Detection of color filter array alignment in image sensors

A method for storing image information in a digital pixel sensor is disclosed for reducing the size of the memory needed to facilitate multiple sampling. An image sensor includes a sensor array of pixel elements generating pixel data in k bits and a data memory for storing pixel data of each pixel element. In one embodiment, the data memory in the digital pixel sensor stores an m-bit time index value and the lower k&#x2212;1 bits of the pixel data for pixel data exceeding the predetermined threshold level in all exposure times except the last. When pixel data in the last exposure time is captured, the data memory stores the time index value in less than m bits and stores the k-bit pixel data. The size of the data memory is minimized while preserving the image quality. The method of the present invention provides the benefits of reducing manufacturing cost and improving production yield.

Method and apparatus for storing image information for multiple sampling operations in a digital pixel sensor

A circuit includes an input terminal coupled to receive an analog input signal, a multiple number of sample-and-hold circuits and a multiple number of analog-to-digital (A/D) converters. The input terminal of each of the sample-and-hold circuits is coupled to receive the analog input signal. Each of the A/D converters has an input terminal and an output terminal, where the input terminal is coupled to an output terminal of a corresponding one of the sample-and-hold circuits. In operation, the sample-and-hold circuits sample the analog input signal sequentially and store a multiple number of analog samples at each of the sample-and-hold circuits. The A/D converters convert the analog samples in parallel to generate digital values at the output terminals of each of the A/D converters representative of each of the analog samples. In one embodiment, the A/D converters are implemented based on a multi-channel bit-serial (MCBS) analog-to-digital conversion scheme.
