A method for shifting a marine propulsion device transmission between first and second gears transmitting torque from a powerhead with a redline RPM. The transmission has a transition time for completing a shift. The method includes measuring an RPM of the powerhead, comparing the RPM to a first threshold, and starting a timer when the RPM exceeds the first threshold. The method includes measuring the RPM of the powerhead after the first threshold is exceeded, comparing the RPM to a second threshold, stopping the timer when the RPM exceeds the second threshold, determining an elapsed time between starting and stopping the timer, and determining a shift RPM based on the determined elapsed time, the redline RPM, and the transition time of the transmission. The method includes controlling the transmission to shift when the RPM measured for the powerhead reaches the shift RPM such that shifting completes before the redline RPM.

Systems and methods for shifting multi-speed transmissions

A method for shifting multi-speed transmissions of marine propulsion devices each having a power head and a shift schedule for shifting between first and second gears to transmit torque from the powerhead. The method includes configuring the transmissions of leader and follower marine propulsion devices to shift when shift schedules of the leader and of the follower indicate shift recommendations, respectively. The method further includes receiving a request to shift the transmission of the leader when the shift schedule of the leader indicates the shift recommendation. The method further includes determining whether conditions are met for the follower to follow the leader in shifting. The method further includes automatically requesting, when conditions are determined to be met for the follower to follow the leader, to shift the transmission of the follower so as to be coordinated with shifting the transmission of the leader.

A method for shifting a multi-speed transmission of a marine propulsion device between a first gear and a second gear each configured to transmit torque from a powerhead to a transmission output shaft. The method includes determining an actual power level requested for operating the marine propulsion device and measuring a transmission output shaft speed in which the transmission output shaft is rotating. The method further includes comparing the actual power level to a shift threshold, the shift threshold corresponding to expected power levels for operating the marine propulsion device as a function of the transmission output shaft speed of the transmission output shaft. The method further includes controlling the multi-speed transmission to shift when the actual power is outside the shift threshold.

A method for downshifting a multi-speed transmission of a marine propulsion device to a first gear from a second gear. The method includes providing a shift schedule that indicates a shift recommendation for when to downshift from the second gear to the first gear. The method further includes configuring the transmission to downshift when the shift schedule indicates the shift recommendation, determining a requested speed of the marine propulsion device, measuring an actual speed of the marine propulsion device, calculating an error between the requested speed and the actual speed, comparing the error to an error threshold, and determining when the error exceeds the error threshold longer than a duration threshold. The method further includes controlling the transmission to downshift, despite the shift schedule indicating a non-shift recommendation, when the duration threshold is exceeded so as to reduce the error between the requested speed and the actual speed.

The method includes operating a variable operating device according to an original setting, measuring an actual system voltage for the marine vessel, and comparing the actual system voltage measured to a target system voltage. The method further includes adjusting the operation of the variable operating device from the original setting based on the comparison of the actual system voltage to the target system voltage, where adjusting the operation changes the electrical power usage in the marine vessel.

Systems and methods for preserving electrical power in a marine vessel having a marine propulsion device

A method for controlling marine vessel speed includes determining a setpoint vessel speed, which is constant while the system is operating in a cruise control mode. The method includes using vessel speed feedback control to adjust operational characteristics of the engine so as to achieve the setpoint vessel speed. The method also includes determining a measured vessel speed and filtering the measured vessel speed. In response to determining that the measured vessel speed is within a given range of the constant setpoint vessel speed, the method includes transitioning to the cruise control mode and comparing the filtered measured vessel speed to the constant setpoint vessel speed for purposes of the feedback control.

Systems and methods for controlling vessel speed when transitioning from launch to cruise

A method of controlling propulsion for automated launch control includes receiving a user-selected command associated with wake surfing, accessing a predetermined RPM limit associated with the user-selected command, and automatically increasing rotational speed of a powerhead to accelerate the marine vessel to a vessel speed setpoint such that the rotational speed does not exceed the predetermined RPM limit. Once the marine vessel is traveling at the vessel speed setpoint, a cruising RPM value associated with the vessel speed setpoint is identified. A difference between the predetermined RPM limit and the cruising RPM value is determined, and then the predetermined RPM limit is adjusted to an adapted RPM limit based on the difference. The adapted RPM limit is then stored for use during a subsequent launch.

Method and system for automated launch control of a marine vessel

A method for preserving electrical power in a marine vessel having a marine propulsion device. The method includes operating a variable operating device according to an original setting, measuring an actual system voltage for the marine propulsion device, and comparing the actual system voltage measured to a target system voltage. A method for controlling a speed of a propeller of a marine propulsion device during launch of a marine vessel comprises receiving a command to initiate an enhanced launch feature of the marine vessel. The method includes increasing a speed of an engine of the marine propulsion device in response to the enhanced launch feature command. While the engine speed increases, the method includes commanding a first amount of engagement of a forward gear controlling torque transfer from an output shaft of the engine to an input shaft of the propeller. After the engine speed reaches a predetermined threshold, the method includes commanding a second, greater amount of engagement of the forward gear controlling torque transfer from the engine output shaft to the propeller input shaft.

The method is carried out by a control module and includes determining a load of the engine, determining speed of the engine, and determining a pitch of the marine vessel. A method of controlling a marine propulsion system includes receiving a roll position measurement signal from a roll sensor measuring roll position of a marine vessel and receiving a steering input. The method includes determining based on the roll position measurement signal and the steering input that the roll position of the marine vessel exceeds a port threshold in a port roll direction where no corresponding steering input is present, and determining based on the roll position measurement signal and the steering input that the roll position of the marine vessel exceeds a starboard threshold in a starboard roll direction where no corresponding steering input is present. A steering compensation is then determined based on the roll position measurement signal, and an actuator is controlled to effectuate the steering compensation to reduce a magnitude of the roll position of the marine vessel.

A method of controlling engine RPM in a marine propulsion device having an engine that effectuates rotation of a propulsor through a gear system that shifts amongst a forward gear position, a reverse gear position, and a neutral position, includes determining that a coolant temperature is below a temperature threshold or that a battery voltage is below a voltage threshold, and then increasing an engine RPM setpoint by a compensation RPM amount while the engines remains in an idle state in order to increase the coolant temperature or the battery voltage. When a shift instruction is detected to transition the gear system from the reverse gear position to the neutral position or from the forward gear position to the neutral position, the engine RPM setpoint is reduced by a shift RPM reduction amount during transition of the gear system, and the engine is controlled according to the engine RPM setpoint.
