A bottom hole assembly having a packing element, a lower cone disposed below the packing element, and a lower slip disposed below the packing element. The bottom hole assembly also includes a setting tool removably attached to the plug, the setting tool having a mandrel and a setting sleeve connected to the mandrel. Also, a method for sealing a well including disposing a bottom hole assembly having a plug and a removable setting tool in a well. The method further includes applying pressure to a setting sleeve, contacting an inner diameter of the well with a lower slip, locking the lower slip against an inner diameter of the well, shearing a shear mechanism, disconnecting the removable setting tool from the well, dropping a ball into the well, contacting the ball with the packing element, and separating the well into at least two sections.

Well plug and bottom hole assembly

A plug is engageable with a ball for seating in a tubular having an internal profile. The plug's body has a bore with a seat. Blocks disposed on the body are temporarily held in a retracted condition, but the blocks are biased outward to an expanded condition for engaging inside the tubular. The plug sets in the tubular with the blocks released from the retracted condition to the expanded condition. With the ball dropped downhole, the seat engages the ball so that fluid pressure is sealed from uphole to downhole through the bore. With applied fluid pressure against the seated ball, the plug can move through the tubular until the blocks seat in the internal profile of the tubing, sliding sleeve, or other component. A seal on the plug can then seal inside the tubular while the blocks seat in the profile and applied pressure pushes on the seated ball on the plug's mandrel.

Composite fracture plug and associated methods

A downhole tool, such as a sliding sleeve, deploys on a tubing string in a borehole. The tool has a housing with an internal bore and at least one port communicating outside the housing. An insert disposed in the bore can move from a closed position to an opened position relative to the port so fluid can be communicated to the borehole. A burst band disposed outside the housing at the port can break away from the housing in response to a particular pressure level communicated through the open port. In particular, the insert can have a seat that engages a deployed plug or ball. The insert shifts open when a first level of applied pressure against the seated ball shears the insert free. This can give a first indication that the insert has moved open. Then, a second level of pressure can be detected when the burst band breaks as a second indication that the insert is opened.
