A system and method are described for sharing IoT devices. For example, one embodiment of a system comprises an Internet of Things (IoT) service in communication with a plurality of IoT devices over a network; a device sharing module to receive an indication from a first user of one or more IoT devices associated with an account of the first user to be shared with a second user; the device sharing module to responsively associate the one or more IoT devices with an account of the second user and to subsequently allow the second user to access the one or more IoT devices.

A system and method are described for performing asset and user tracking. A system and method for Internet of Things (IoT) Implementations for controlling electronic equipment. One embodiment of a system includes: an IoT hub that includes a network interface to couple the IoT hub to an IoT service over a wide area network (WAN), and at least one IoT device communicatively coupled to the IoT hub over a wireless communication channel. The IoT device includes an infrared (IR) or radio frequency (RF) blaster to control environmental control equipment via IR or RF communication with the environmental control equipment, at least one sensor to measure current environmental conditions capable of being controlled by the environmental control equipment, the IoT device to transmit an indication of the current conditions to the IoT hub over the wireless communication channel; and the IoT hub includes a remote control code database to store remote control codes usable to control the environmental control equipment.

A platform, apparatus and method for detecting that an IoT hub communication channel has become inoperative. For example, one embodiment of an IoT system comprises: an Internet of Things (IoT) hub comprising a network interface to couple the IoT hub to an IoT service over a first communication channel; at least one IoT device communicatively coupled to the IoT hub over a second communication channel; connection monitoring logic to detect when the first communication channel between the IoT service and the IoT hub has become inoperative; notification logic to transmit a notification to a data processing device of a user of the IoT system responsive to the connection monitoring logic detecting that the first communication channel has become inoperative.

A virtual Slide-to-Lock feature for communication devices running a PTT application. When the Slide-to-Lock feature is activated, a PTT locking function on the communication device is activated. As a result, messages on the communication device may be created, without the need of the user to continuously hold or select a Hold-to-Talk or similar PTT feature. In one non-exclusive embodiment, the virtual Slide-to-Lock feature is activated when a finger is moved from a first region to a second region on a touch-sensitive display screen and de-activated with the opposite motion.

Virtual slide-to-lock feature for push-to-talk communication applications

A Tap-to-End feature for unlocking a virtual Slide-to-Lock lock feature on a display screen of the communication device running a PTT application. In one embodiment, the Tap-to-End is implemented by simply tapping the display screen. In a second embodiment, the Tap-to-End feature is implemented by contacting the display screen on the communication device running the PTT application for a predetermined period of time. When the threshold is exceeded, the Slide-to-lock feature is unlocked. In various embodiments, the threshold is 3 seconds or less. In yet other embodiments, the Tap-to-End feature may be implemented anywhere on the display screen of the communication device running the PTT application including, but not limited to, in the vicinity of where the virtual Slide-to-lock feature is implemented.

A method is described comprising: assigning to each of a first group of keys of an alphanumeric keyboard a specific alphabetic character; assigning to each of a second group of keys of the alphanumeric keyboard both a specific alphabetic character and a specific number; and monitoring keys on the keyboard selected in sequence by an end user, and if all keys within the sequence are keys within the second group of keys, generating within the display a contact list containing contact entries, each of the contact entries within the list identified based on the alphabetic characters associated with the sequence of selected keys and/or the numbers associated with the sequence of selected keys.
