A system for initiating a charge downhole in a wellbore includes a first donor charge detonable to produce a first detonation wave, a second donor charge detonable to produce a second detonation wave, and an acceptor charge detonable by either the first detonation wave or the second detonation wave. The system also includes a donor charge barrier separating the first donor charge from the second donor charge. The donor charge barrier includes heat dissipative and conduction characteristics for preventing deflagration from spreading between the first donor charge and the second donor charge. The system also includes an acceptor charge barrier separating the acceptor charge from the first donor charge and the second donor charge. The acceptor charge barrier includes Shockwave impedance characteristics for conveying the first detonation wave or the second detonation wave to the acceptor charge to detonate the acceptor charge.

System and method for firing a charge in a well tool

A method involving introducing a perforation string into a wellbore passing through a subterranean formation, the perforation string having a perforation gun and a releasable tracer, the releasable tracer being releasable in response to a fluid produced from the subterranean formation contacting the nearby perforation string. The method includes perforating, with the perforation gun, a surface of the wellbore and withdrawing fluid from a wellbore. The method further includes allowing the releasable tracer to release from the perforation string after the fluid produced from the formation contacts the perforation string and flows toward an entrance of the wellbore. Finally, measuring at least one of an amount or presence of the releasable tracer thereby indicating at least one of an amount or presence of the fluid produced from the subterranean formation.

Passive wellbore monitoring with tracers

A composite drill gun for use in a wellbore environment can include a detonation housing containing a detonation source, a composite carrier containing one or more encapsulated charges, and a detonation train connecting the detonation source to the encapsulated charges. The detonation source and each individual encapsulated charge are all sealed with respect to the wellbore environment, and thus the carrier need not be sealed with respect to the wellbore environment. The carrier can be made out of composite materials without worry of leaks into the interior of the carrier, as the detonation source and encapsulated charges are all sealed with respect to the wellbore environment. The composite carrier can be easily drilled out of the wellbore after detonation.

As assembly for a pressure-restrictor plate for a partially loaded perforating gun is provided. The assembly can include a charge tube positioned in a loaded-gun section of a partially loaded perforating gun. The assembly can also include a pressure-restrictor plate positioned in a blank-gun section of the partially loaded perforating gun and adjacent to the charge tube. The assembly can further include a rod for securing the pressure-restrictor plate in a position, the rod having a first end that is coupled to the pressure-restrictor plate and a second end that is coupled to an end plate positioned within the partially loaded perforating gun.

Perforating assemblies and perforating safety systems capable of being disposed in a wellbore for hydrocarbon fluid production are described. The perforating assemblies can include an isolation device that is capable of preventing a detonation train when the assemblies are in a first orientation and allowing a detonation train when the perforating assemblies are in a second orientation. The isolation device can be automatically reoriented or reconfigured upon a change in the orientation of the perforating assembly.

An apparatus for perforating a wellbore comprises a housing, at least one perforating charge disposed within the housing, a detonation cord coupled to the at least one perforating charge, and a booster coupled to an end of the detonation cord. The booster comprises a booster body having a first end and a second end, a cavity defined within the booster body between the first end and the second end, an explosive material disposed within the cavity adjacent the first end, and a locking feature disposed adjacent the second end, where the locking feature is configured to allow the booster to engage the end of the detonation cord in a first direction and resist movement in a second direction.

Perforating assemblies and perforating safety systems capable of being disposed in a wellbore for hydrocarbon fluid production are described. The perforating assemblies can include an isolation device that is capable of preventing a denotation train when the assemblies are in a first orientation and allowing a denotation train when the perforating assemblies are in a second orientation. The isolation device can be automatically reoriented or reconfigured upon a change in the orientation of the perforating assembly.

A perforating safety system. A perforating safety system includes a detonation transfer interrupter with a device which decreases an axial separation between detonation transfer components after installation of the interrupter in the well. Another perforating safety system includes a perforating gun and firing head installed together in the well, and an interrupter having a device which increases a separation between detonation transfer components in the well to thereby prevent transfer of detonation from the firing head to the perforating gun. Yet another perforating safety system includes a firing head positioned at a distal end of a perforating assembly when installed in the well, and an interrupter having a device which decreases a separation between detonation transfer components after installation of the interrupter in the well.

Perforating safety system

Methods are provided which permit pressure tested multiple perforating gun modules to be interconnected into gun assemblies, without disturbing any pressure-bearing seals of the modules. Prior to assembling the gun assembly, the seals of the modules are pressure tested. The pressure tested modules are then connected to each other without disconnecting or otherwise breaking any of the pressure-bearing seals of the modules.

Method for creating leak-tested perforating gun assemblies

A system is provided for selectively perforating multiple zones in a well either simultaneously, or in series, having isolation barriers, or packers, located between the perforating multiple zones, without moving the system with respect to the well. The system includes a tubing string which carries at least a first and a second perforating gun. At least a first and a second pressure actuated firing head are associated with the first and second perforating guns, respectively. A first and second packer for isolating the perforating guns from each other. A source of actuating fluid pressure for the firing head is provided, which may be the bore of the tubing string. A first selective communication device is provided for isolating the second firing head from the source of actuating fluid pressure until after the first perforating gun has been fired, and for then communicating the second firing head with the source of actuating fluid pressure in response to firing of the first perforating gun.

Select fire multiple drill string tester

A system is provided for performing multiple operations on a well in response to multiple fluid pressure increases. The system includes first and second pressure actuated firing heads and a source of actuating fluid pressure for the firing heads. A first selective communication device is provided for isolating the second firing head from the source of actuating fluid pressure until after the first firing head has been actuated and for then communicating the second firing head with the source of actuating fluid pressure in response to actuation of the first firing head. This system is particularly adapted for allowing pressure testing of a well upon a first fluid pressure increase, followed by perforation of the well upon a second fluid pressure increase.

Combined pressure testing and selective fired perforating systems

A system is provided for selectively perforating multiple zones in a well on a single trip into the well. The system includes a tubing string which carries at least a first and a second perforating gun. At least a first and a second pressure actuated firing head are associated with the first and second perforating guns, respectively. A source of actuating fluid pressure for the firing head is provided, which may be the bore of the tubing string. A first selective communication device is provided for isolating the second firing head from the source of actuating fluid pressure until after the first perforating gun has been fired, and for then communicating the second firing head with the source of actuating fluid pressure in response to firing of the first perforating gun. The first firing head provides a time delay during which the actuating fluid pressure may be bled off prior to the firing of the first perforating gun.
