This application is directed to performing a plurality of activities each of which is performed in a respective application with content associated with a content type selected from a group consisting of television programming, online content, on-device application, information views, and other content types. Each activity is associated with a timestamp, and described using a predefined format covering an action and content associated with the action. Each of the plurality of activities is then logged into an activities log in accordance with the predefined format. A plurality of user selectable affordances are displayed concurrently in a home screen on a display of the client device. Each of the affordances is associated with one of the plurality of activities performed with associated content, and the plurality of affordances includes at least two affordances associated with two distinct activities of the plurality of activities performed by two distinct applications.

Combined activities history on a device

The subject matter of this specification can be implemented in, among other things, a computer-implemented method that includes identifying metadata related to television programming being presented on a display device. The method further includes extracting one or more keywords from the metadata. The method further includes generating multiple search suggestions based on the keywords and first search results based on one or more of the search suggestions. The method further includes presenting the search suggestions and the first search results together on the display device.

This application is directed to changing a TV operating mode based on a potential relationship among viewers of a connected TV. In accordance with a method for presenting home screen shortcuts, a computer system is coupled to a plurality of media content providers and obtains a respective media application for each of the media content providers. Content is provided for display on the television screen from a first media content provider via a first media application. The computer system obtains a plurality of shortcuts corresponding to a home screen user interface, and the plurality of shortcuts includes one or more media shortcuts and a search shortcut. The home screen user interface is displayed concurrently with the provided content on the television screen, and the one or more media shortcuts and the search shortcut are concurrently displayed on the home screen user interface. In response to selection of the search shortcut, the computer system initiates a shortcut search for one or more additional shortcuts for display on the home screen user interface.

Systems and methods for presenting home screen shortcuts

A system, computer-readable storage medium storing at least one program, and a computer-implemented method for obtaining video streams is presented. A device-agnostic request to obtain a video stream is received from an application executing on a client device, the device-agnostic request including a universal resource identifier (URI) for the video stream, the URI including a type of the video stream and at least one of a name of the video stream and device-specific parameters for the video stream. The URI is analyzed to identify a media device from which the video stream is available. A device-specific library for the media device is identified. A device-specific request corresponding to the device-agnostic request is executed to obtain the video stream, the device-specific request including the URI. The video stream is received from the media device responsive to executing the device-specific request. The video stream is provided to the application.

System and method for obtaining video streams
