The present disclosure is directed toward systems, methods, and non-transitory computer readable media for generating, providing, and editing collaborative content items on client devices. For example, the disclosed systems provide a collaborative content item that includes a text display state and a render display state. A client device can provide for the collaborative content item to receive source text in the text display state. Then, based on the source text, the client device can provide for display of the collaborative content item in the render display state that generates a graphical representation for the collaborative content item based on rendering the source text. In some embodiments, the disclosed systems and methods allow two or more client devices to simultaneously modify the source text associated with the collaborative content item, and in turn, modify the graphical representation of the collaborative content item based on the modified source text.

Generating collaborative content items to provide customizable graphical representations in online graphical user interfaces

Disclosed are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for automatically formatting content items for presentation. For example, in response to receiving an invocation of a presentation mode for a content item, a computing device can generate a tree structure representing the structure of the content item. The computing device can generate a presentation version of the content item based on a presentation template that defines the presentation formatting for the content item. The computing device can traverse the tree and determine a portion of the presentation version of the content item to present based on the amount of content that can fit within a display size of a display device. In some implementations, the computing device can determine portions of content to suppress and/or highlight based on various characteristics, metadata, comments, links, etc., corresponding to the portions of content in the content item.

Automatically formatting content items for presentation

The present disclosure relates to generating and utilizing digital associations between digital documents and digital calendar events based on determined content connections. For example, one or more embodiments suggest a digital document to a user for association with a digital calendar event based on content connections between the digital document and the digital calendar event. In particular, one or more embodiments determine a content connection based on document characteristics (e.g., document content and access characteristics) and calendar event characteristics (e.g., calendar content and historical meeting information). For example, the system can train a machine learning model to determine content connections based on document characteristics and calendar event characteristics. By associating digital documents with digital calendar events, the system can efficiently manage digital documents for participants, automatically generate new digital documents for calendar events, generate snippets for insertion within digital documents, and generate calendar event summaries and action items.

Generating digital associations between documents and digital calendar events based on content connections

A collaborative content management system allows users to create, edit, and share collaborative content items among a plurality of other users. The system enables a collaboration event between author client devices and recipient client devices. During a collaboration event, a collaborative content item is created by an author. The collaborative content item is converted into a model collaborative content item and stored in the collaborative content management system. Access to the model collaborative content item is shared with recipient client devices. A derivative copy of the collaborative content item is generated based on the model collaborative content item, for instance in response to a request from a user of a recipient client device. The created derivative collaborative content items are editable by users corresponding to the derivative collaborative content item such that edits made to a first derivative collaborative content item are not accessible to other derivative collaborative content items.
