A computing system environment executes platform-independent instructions to combine object data of a plurality of objects into a platform-independent object. Such objects of the plurality of objects may, for example, include form, entity and schema objects. Platform-dependent instructions comprising a set of one or more platform-specific instructions to display and operate on the platform-independent object are executed on a specific platform type associated with the platform-dependent instructions. By decoupling the hardcoded functionality from easily created and edited object portions of the application design, rapid deployment and execution of customized functionality across multiple distinct platforms is thereby enabled.

The present invention provides systems and methods that can be used to manage state on a cluster comprising a plurality of application servers. A system according to one aspect of the invention comprises a plurality of application servers each of which is equipped to process requests, host unique state, and selectively forward requests. Client requests can arrive at any of the application servers. The servers forward client requests, as needed. A target computer system identification used in request forwarding can be provided with a response to the client whenever a cluster member develops state while carrying out a client request. The client, can include the request forwarding data in subsequent requests that are part of the same session. The invention provides a standards-compliant and secure system for allowing applications servers to effectuate requests that require processing by a particular target computer system.

A system for parallel asynchronous command execution is provided. The system includes a first computer system for directing a plurality of calls to at least one other computer system. The first computer system invokes a remote procedure in the other computer system and receives results from the procedure via an event triggered by the other computer system. The system may also include a distributed object architecture for communicating between the first computer system and the other computer system.

A user interface to display and manage a plurality of entities as if a single entity is provided. The user interface includes a representation of the collection of entities as a whole, and a representation of members associated with the entity. If an action is performed on the representation of the entities as a whole, then the action is propagated to the collection of entities, if the action is performed on the representation of the member associated with the entity, then the action is directed to the member.

A virtual applications architecture is provided according to the present invention. The architecture includes a topology manager for managing applications across a plurality of members, and a virtual applications manager for defining a plurality of resources comprising the applications. The topology manager communicates with the plurality of members to initiate scaling of the applications associated with the virtual applications manager to the members. The architecture may also include a replication system for deploying the applications to the members.

An instrumentation client API is provided within a managed code runtime environment for accessing instrumentation data that resides outside of the managed code runtime environment. The instrumentation client API wraps, or translates, calls to and from an instrumentation data source external to the runtime environment. The API interacts with an interface provided by the instrumentation data source to provide functionality and connectivity that is not otherwise provided by the instrumentation data source. The API also provides access to instrumentation data in a manner that is consistent with the models and classes provided by the runtime platform. The classes defined by the API return collections and exceptions in a way that is consistent with the managed code runtime platform.

Method and apparatus for accessing instrumentation data from within a managed code environment

A system and method for monitoring events of a plurality of members configured as an entity. Configurable event logging settings can be defined at a first member and dynamically propagated to each member of the entity to establish event logging configuration settings at each of the plurality of members. In one aspect of the invention, a system and method log different event types in accordance with configuration settings into a common event type data format at a plurality of members. The different event types can then be coalesced for the entire entity and returned to a requestor residing at a single location. Additionally, a unique identifier can be assigned to assist in monitoring of events. Also, to assist in monitoring, data that is common to all event types can be stored in a separate table from data specific to an event type.
