A traction battery assembly includes battery arrays and a thermal exchange assembly of a battery pack. The thermal exchange assembly has passageways that each communicate coolant from a first side of the battery pack to an opposite, second side of the battery pack. An inlet conduit is on the first side. The inlet conduit is arranged such that the delivering of coolant to a first one of the passageways is upstream from the delivering of coolant to a second one of the passageways. An outlet conduit is on the second side. The outlet conduit is arranged such that the receiving of coolant from the first one of passageways to the outlet conduit is upstream from the receiving of coolant from the second one of the passageways to the outlet conduit.

Traction battery coolant assembly and thermal management method

Battery arrays may be housed within electrified vehicle battery packs. An exemplary battery array may include an array support structure that includes a roll bonded cold plate. The roll bonded cold plate may be integrated into the battery array, as opposed to an outer enclosure assembly of the traction battery pack, and is thus arranged to directly thermally manage one or more battery cells of the battery array. The roll bonded cold plate may be configured to establish a single side or multiple sides of the array support structure.

This disclosure details exemplary battery pack designs, such as those designed for use within electrified vehicles. Exemplary battery packs may include an enclosure assembly and a plurality of battery arrays housed inside the enclosure assembly. The enclosure assembly may include a mid-tray that is configured for supporting, cooling/heating, and sealing second tier battery arrays. The configuration of the mid-tray allows coolant joints to be eliminated inside of the battery pack.
