A wafer assembly includes a leadframe having signal contacts and cables with signal conductors terminated to the corresponding signal contacts. Each cable includes a cable shield providing shielding for the signal conductors. The wafer assembly includes a wafer body holding the signal contacts. The wafer assembly includes first and second ground frames coupled to the first and second sides of the wafer body to provide electrical shielding for the leadframe. The ground frames include ground shields providing shielding for mating ends of the corresponding signal contacts. The ground frames includes cable covers coupled to the corresponding cable shields.

Wafer assembly for electrical connector assemblies

A circuit board assembly includes a circuit board and an electrical connector having a connector housing holding contacts in a contact array. The connector housing has a mating end configured to be mated with a mating electrical connector in a mating direction. The electrical connector has cables terminated to the contacts and extending from a cable end. A connector mount is used to locate the electrical connector relative to the circuit board. A bracket is coupled to the mounting surface of the circuit board. A biasing member is coupled to the bracket and the mounting feature and is compressible along a compression axis parallel to the mating direction to allow the electrical connector to float in the mating direction relative to the circuit board.

Circuit board assembly for a communication system

An electrical connector assembly includes a housing having a mating interface configured to be mated with a hermaphroditic mating electrical connector assembly. The housing includes an electrically conductive commoning member having contact openings. Wafer assemblies are coupled to the housing each having a leadframe, a wafer body holding the leadframe, and a ground frame providing electrical shielding for the leadframe. The signal contacts are terminated to cables. The ground shields are electrically connected to the commoning member. The mating ends of the signal contacts and the ground shields form a hermaphroditic mating interface for mating with the hermaphroditic mating electrical connector assembly.

Direct plug hermaphroditic electrical connector assemblies

An electrical cable includes a conductor assembly having a first conductor, a second conductor and an insulator surrounding the first conductor and the second conductor. The insulator has an outer surface having an RMS roughness of less than 1.0 micrometers. A cable shield provides electrical shielding for the first and second conductors and has a metallized conductive layer on the outer surface of the insulator. A method of manufacturing an electrical cable includes feeding a first conductor and a second conductor to a core extruder, extruding an insulator around the first and second conductors at the core extruder, heating an outer surface of the insulator to lower a roughness profile of the outer surface, and directly apply a conductive layer to the outer surface of the insulator.

Electrical cable

A circuit board assembly includes an electrical connector mounted to a circuit board having a connector housing holding contacts in a contact array. A connector mount having a bracket is coupled to the mounting surface of the circuit board proximate to the mating edge. The electrical connector is movably coupled to the connector mount to move relative to the circuit board during mating with the mating electrical connector. The connector mount has a biasing member compressible along a compression axis parallel to the mating direction to allow the electrical connector to float in the mating direction relative to the circuit board. The electrical connector is movably coupled to the connector mount in a confined envelope in at least one floating direction perpendicular to the mating direction.

An electrical connector includes wafer assemblies coupled to a housing. Each wafer assembly includes a leadframe, a wafer body holding the leadframe, and a ground frame coupled to the wafer body to provide electrical shielding for the leadframe. Each leadframe has signal contacts with mating ends extending from the wafer body for mating with mating signal contacts of a mating electrical connector. The mating ends are twisted 45° to define twisted mating interfaces. Each ground frame has ground shields extending from a ground plate along the mating ends of the signal contacts. The ground shields are twisted 45° relative to the ground plate to define twisted shield zones along the mating ends of the signal contacts.

Direct plug orthogonal board to board connector system

An electrical connector includes wafer assemblies coupled to a housing. Each wafer assembly includes a leadframe, a wafer body holding the leadframe, and a ground frame coupled to the wafer body to provide electrical shielding for the leadframe. Each leadframe has signal contacts with mating ends extending from the wafer body for mating with mating signal contacts of a mating electrical connector. The mating ends are twisted 45&#xb0; to define twisted mating interfaces. Each ground frame has ground shields extending from a ground plate along the mating ends of the signal contacts. The ground shields are twisted 45&#xb0; relative to the ground plate to define twisted shield zones along the mating ends of the signal contacts.

A contact module includes a frame assembly having a leadframe and a dielectric frame partially encasing the leadframe. The leadframe includes ground conductors each having a transition portion extending between a mating end configured to be mated to a mating connector and a terminating end configured to be terminated to one of a circuit board or a cable conductor. The dielectric frame includes dielectric material encasing at least a portion of each transition portion. Each mating end extends from the dielectric frame for connection with the mating connector. Each terminating end extends from the dielectric frame for connection with the circuit board or the cable conductor. The contact module includes resistive elements within the dielectric frame. Each resistive element is coupled in series with the transition portion of the corresponding ground conductor.

Electrical connector having resonance control

An electrical connector includes a connector housing having a mating end at a front of the connector housing configured to be mating with a mating electrical connector. The connector housing includes a contact module chamber. An electrical connector includes a stack of contact modules received in the contact module chamber. Each contact module includes a module body holding a plurality of contacts. The contacts have mating ends at the mating end of the connector housing for mating with the mating electrical connector; and an electrical connector includes a contact module biasing members between the contact modules and the connector housing to forward bias the contact modules in the contact module chamber, wherein the contact module biasing members are compressible to allow the contact modules to move independent from each other relative to the connector housing in the contact module chamber when mating with the mating electrical connector.

Electrical connector having contact modules

An electrical connector includes a housing holding wafer assemblies in a wafer stack each including a wafer body holding a leadframe with signal contacts arranged in pairs and extending between mating ends and mounting ends. Each pair includes a primary signal contact and a secondary signal contact. Each signal contact has a main body extending through the wafer bodies and a mating end extend from the wafer body presented at the mating interface. The mating ends are twisted 45&#xb0; relative to the main bodies. The mating end of the primary signal contact is arranged at a first side of the main body and the mating end of the secondary signal contact is arranged at a second side of the main body to define a twisted pair interface configured to be mated with the mating signal contacts of the mating electrical connector.

A printed circuit board includes a layered substrate having a plurality of layers having an electrical connector footprint configured to receive an electrical connector. The printed circuit board includes pair anti-pads passing through the layered substrate around pairs of signal vias. The printed circuit board includes ground vias passing through the layered substrate. The ground vias are configured to receive ground pins of the electrical connector. The ground vias are located outside of the pair anti-pads. The printed circuit board includes SI vias passing through the layered substrate. The SI vias form an SI fence surrounding the corresponding pair anti-pad.

Circuit board connector footprint

A header assembly includes a header housing and contact modules coupled to the header housing each having a frame assembly with a signal leadframe and a dielectric frame. The dielectric frame includes mating portion extensions at a front of the dielectric frame. The signal leadframe includes mating portions extending forward from the mating portion extensions. Each contact module includes a ground shield having ground shrouds providing electrical shielding for the mating portions. Each ground shroud includes shroud walls forming a shroud cavity receiving the corresponding mating portion extension. Each ground shroud includes a shroud transition to vary a depth of the shroud cavity along a length of the ground shroud.

Contact module for a header assembly

A header assembly includes a header housing having a header cavity. The header assembly includes header signal contacts received in corresponding signal contact channels having mating ends arranged in the header cavity for mating with the receptacle assembly. The header assembly includes header ground contacts received in corresponding ground contact channels. Each header ground contact includes shield walls forming a shield cavity receiving header signal contacts to provide electrical shielding for the header signal contacts. The shield walls include an end wall extending between first and second side walls. Each header ground contact includes a mating protrusion that extends outward relative to the shield cavity from the corresponding shield wall. The mating protrusion is configured to engage a conductive insert of the receptacle assembly used to electrically common each of the header ground contacts.

Shielding structure for a connector assembly

A contact module includes a leadframe having signal contacts arranged in pairs. Each signal contact includes a lead having sides extending between inner and outer edges. The contact module includes a dielectric frame supporting the leadframe having a first side and a second side with windows extending through the dielectric frame between the first side and the second side. The windows exposing to air the sides, the inner edges and the outer edges of the corresponding leads along a majority of lengths of the leads. The contact module includes a shield structure having a first ground shield at the first side and a second ground shield at the second side to provide electrical shielding for the signal contacts.
