A device and method are provided for modulating brain inflammation. The device includes a light source positionable at a location adjacent a portion of brain for modulating the inflammation thereof. The light source has a first off condition and second on condition wherein the light source generates light having a wavelength in the range of 450-495 nanometers (nm). A controller is operatively connected to the light source. The controller provides control signals to the light source for controlling the switching of the light source between the on and the off conditions. The controller is configured to switch the light source to the on condition for a portion of a treatment cycle.

Device and method for blue light modulation of brain inflammation

Electrical stimulation of specific facial and lingual nerves creates a more sustained pulsatility activity compared to stimulation of other cranial nerves. Pulsatility of arteries has intrinsic time constraints related to the time for vasodilation/constriction and time to return to baseline (T) after electrical stimulation which may affect the pulsatility response. Control of temporal patterning and the stimulation waveform maximizes the physiological response to cerebral pulsatility and its resulting effects on cerebral spinal fluid penetration into the brain parenchyma for a multitude of therapeutic uses including clearing misfolded proteins and/or administered pharmacological agents, diluting endogenous neurochemical concentrations within the brain, and reducing non-synaptic coupling.

The present invention provides materials and methods for using electrical stimulation to treat a mammal having a proteinopathy (e.g., neurodegenerative diseases) or at risk of developing a proteinopathy are provided. For example, the present invention provides materials and methods for modulating glymphatic clearance (e.g., enhancing glymphatic clearance) of pathogenic proteins.

Tissue compression devices having pressure indicators and methods of using the same. The tissue compression devices provide feedback to a user with respect to the pressure being applied to selected tissue at a selected location such as a radial artery to assist the user in applying the desired amount of pressure to the tissue (such as the pressure needed to achieve hemostasis at an access site). The pressure indication may be provided by a ring indicator that moves between two configurations (e.g., a concave configuration and a convex configuration), a bellow chamber in a housing, a bladder located below a bladder window, etc.

A closed loop, neural activity triggered rehabilitation device and method are provided for facilitating recovery of a patient from the effects of a sensory motor disability. The device includes a sensor system positionable adjacent the brain of the patient. The sensor system detects neural signals. A functional stimulation component is operatively connectable to at least one body part, such as a muscle or a nerve. The functional stimulation component stimulates the at least one body part in response to the neural signals detected. A sensory stimulation module is operatively connected to the patient to provide sensory feedback thereto.

Closed loop neural activity triggered rehabilitation device and method

A scaffold for neurons consists of tubes sized to promote neural growth through the tubes. The tubes may be fixed to a substrate providing electrical or optical paths out from the interior of the tubes from sensors or stimulating probes at one or more locations along the length of the coaxial axons. Steering electrodes at spaces between tubes may be used to selectively promote the growth of interconnections of different axons in a one, two, or three-dimensional fashion.

Tubular scaffold for neural growth

An osseointegrated neural interface (ONI) is provided for control of a prosthetic. The ONI includes an elongated, hollow rod having a first end receivable in an intramedullary cavity of a bone, a second end operatively connected to the prosthetic and an inner surface defining a cavity. An electrode is receiveable on a terminal end of a peripheral nerve and positionable within the cavity of the rod. The electrode being capable of sensing the neural signals generated by the peripheral nerve and stimulating the peripheral nerve. A recording/stimulation unit, receiveable within the cavity of the rod, records the neural signals from the peripheral nerve sensed by the electrode and transmits the signals to a controller operatively connected thereto. The controller controls operation of the prosthetic in response to the neural signals recorded by the recording unit. In addition, the controller receives stimulation signals from a sensor in the prosthetic and causes the electrode to stimulate the peripheral nerve via the recording/stimulation unit in response thereto.

Osseointegrated neural interface and method

Devices for detecting electrical activity in electrically active biological tissues and methods for using the devices are provided. The devices include an electrode array that is configured for implantation on electrically active biological tissue. The electrode array comprises a plurality of electrode sites comprising one or more layers of transparent, electrically conductive graphene disposed on a transparent substrate.

Transparent and flexible neural electrode arrays

A thin-film microelectrode array tailored for long-term, minimally invasive cortical recording or stimulation and method are provided. The microelectrode array includes a flexible element that is movable between a first contracted configuration and a second expanded configuration. An array of contacts is provided on the flexible element. The contacts are engagable with a cortical surface with the flexible element in the expanded configuration. A link operatively connects the array of contacts to a control module. The link is capable of transmitting at least one of cortical recordings and cortical stimulation signals thereon.

In some preferred embodiments, without limitation, the present invention comprises an implantable, intracranial neural interface node which is an integrated and minimally invasive platform system and supports cross-modal neural interfaces to the cerebrum and other associated structures in the central nervous system. The neural interfaces comprise electrical and chemical interfaces for neural recording, electrical stimulation, chemical delivery, chemical sensing, chemical sampling, cell delivery, genetic material delivery and/or other functions of interest.
