A flow regulation device is disclosed. The flow regulation device is fluidly located between a fluid source and a dialysis machine. In some embodiments, the flow regulation device includes an inlet in fluid communication with the fluid source to receive a fluid and an outlet in fluid communication with the dialysis machine to provide the fluid. The flow regulation device also includes a closed volume defined by walls that are configured to expand and contract to provide a variable internal volume. A cross-sectional width of the variable internal volume of the flow regulation device is larger than diameters of the inlet and the outlet to smooth changes in a draw rate of the fluid from the dialysis machine.

A dialysis system is disclosed. An example dialysis system includes a water treatment device configured to provide purified water and a dialysis machine including a dialysate holding tank, and a dialysate mixing pump connected to a source of concentrate. The dialysis machine is configured to prepare dialysate using the purified water by receiving an indication that a batch of dialysate is needed, transmitting a first message to the water treatment device to begin providing the purified water, and causing the dialysate mixing pump to pump a concentrate from the source of concentrate for mixing with the purified water to form the dialysate for storage in the dialysate holding tank. After the batch of the dialysate has been stored to the dialysate holding tank, the dialysis machine transmits a second message to the water treatment device to stop providing the purified water.

A blood treatment air purging system and method includes a level detector positioned and arranged to detect a low fluid level in a blood circuit indicating a high amount of air in the blood circuit; a blood pump operable with the blood circuit; a venous patient line of the blood circuit; and at least one blood circuit air vent valve, wherein the system and method are configured or programmed to (i) stop the blood pump, (ii) close the venous patient line, and (iii) open the at least one blood circuit air vent valve to atmosphere or a container when the low fluid level is detected, and (iv) run the blood pump to meter air through the at least one blood circuit air vent valve to atmosphere or the container.

Blood treatment air purging system and method

A peritoneal dialysis apparatus includes a filter and a dialysis fluid circuit in fluid communication with the filter. The peritoneal dialysis apparatus also includes a pump for pumping fresh dialysis fluid to a peritoneum of a patient via the dialysis fluid circuit and pumping used dialysis fluid from the peritoneum of the patient through the dialysis fluid circuit and the filter. The peritoneal dialysis apparatus further includes a selective air access in fluid communication with the dialysis fluid circuit and a control unit configured to control the pump during a peritoneal dialysis treatment and a filter cleaning sequence. The control unit forms a fluid mixture during a filter cleaning sequence by opening the selective air access to mix air with a physiologically safe fluid. The fluid mixture is transferred across insides and/or outsides of the filter at least one time.

System and method to efficiently clean a blood filter

A dialysis method and system for determining an amount of total chlorine in a partially purified water sample is disclosed. The system includes a water machine that produces at least partially purified water including an at least partially purified water sample and a dialysis machine that provides a dialysis treatment to a patient. The dialysis machine receives the at least partially purified water from the water machine to prepare dialysis fluid for the dialysis treatment. The system also includes a total chlorine detector configured to receive the at least partially purified water sample, at a first time apply a source voltage to the at least partially purified water sample, and at a second time stop applying the source voltage to the at least partially purified water sample and instead monitor a sensed electrical parameter to determine an amount of total chlorine in the at least partially purified water sample.

Method of determining an amount of total chlorine in a water sample for a hemodialysis treatment

A hemodiafiltration system with a disposable pumping unit is disclosed. An example system includes a medical fluid pump actuator, a medical fluid heater, a blood filter and a disposable unit. The example disposable unit includes a medical fluid cassette portion including a medical fluid cassette housing configured to be operatively connected to the medical fluid pump actuator to pump medical fluid through the medical fluid cassette portion when the medical fluid cassette portion is in fluid communication with a medical fluid source. The example medical fluid cassette portion is also configured to be placed in fluid communication with the blood filter and with an extracorporeal circuit communicating with the blood filter, the fluid communication enabling hemodiafiltration to be performed. The example disposable unit also includes a heater bag configured to be placed in operable communication with the medical fluid heater and in fluid communication with the medical fluid cassette portion.

A dialysis system includes a dialysis machine including at least one pump positioned and arranged to pump a dialysis fluid; and a dialysis fluid source located separate from and in fluid communication with the dialysis fluid machine, the dialysis fluid source including a purified water line for carrying purified water, a source of a first concentrate, a source of a second concentrate, a first concentrate pump positioned and arranged to pump first concentrate from the first concentrate source, and a second concentrate pump positioned and arranged to pump second concentrate from the second concentrate source, wherein dialysis fluid is prepared for delivery from the dialysis fluid source to the dialysis machine by mixing the purified water with the first concentrate pumped by the first concentrate pump and the second concentrate pumped by the second concentrate pump.

Dialysis system with online dialysis fluid generation

A renal therapy apparatus includes a blood filter, a blood pump, a treatment fluid pump, and a control unit configured to control at least one of the blood pump or the treatment fluid pump during a filter cleaning sequence. The blood filter includes a plurality of hollow fiber membranes. During the filter cleaning sequence, a fluid mixture is formed by mixing air with a blood-compatible and physiologically safe fluid. Also during the filter cleaning sequence, the fluid mixture is transferred across insides and/or outsides of the plurality of hollow fiber membranes at least one time. The use of the fluid mixture enables the filter cleaning sequence to be performed during the blood treatment.

A system for monitoring water quality for dialysis, dialysis fluids, and body fluids treated by dialysis fluids, is disclosed. The system uses microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors for detecting impurities in input water or dialysis fluid, and in the prepared dialysate. These sensors may also be used to monitor and check the blood of the patient being treated. These sensors include ion-selective sensors, for ions such as ammonium or calcium, and also include amperometric array sensors, suitable for ions from chlorine or chloramines, e.g., chloride. These sensors assist in the monitoring of water supplies from a city water main or well. The sensors may be used in conjunction with systems for preparing dialysate solutions from water for use at home or elsewhere.

In-line sensors for dialysis applications

A peritoneal dialysis system is disclosed. An example peritoneal dialysis system includes a water treatment device including a water treatment processor and a first memory and a peritoneal dialysis ('PD') machine including a PD processor and a second memory. The PD machine is configured to mix water treated by the water treatment device with at least one concentrate to produce a peritoneal dialysis fluid for treatment. The example peritoneal dialysis system also includes a data link between the water treatment processor and the PD processor. The water treatment device is configured to prepare an amount of treated water and, upon communication between the water treatment processor and PD processor over the data link, deliver the amount of the treated water to the PD machine for use in mixing the peritoneal dialysis fluid for the treatment. The treated water has a purity corresponding to an injectable quality or a sterile quality.

A home medical device system includes a home therapy machine for performing a home therapy on a patient; a user interface operably connected to the home therapy machine, the user interface receiving operator inputs; a water treatment device in fluid communication with the home therapy machine; and a data connection between the home therapy machine and the water treatment device, wherein the home therapy machine transmits data via the connection to the water treatment device for control of the water treatment device, the data provided based on at least one of the operator inputs received via the user interface.

Dialysis systems that remove air from a blood circuit are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, a dialysis system includes a dialysis fluid circuit, a blood circuit including an arterial line, a venous line, and an enclosure in fluid communication with the venous line, the enclosure configured to release air through a hydrophobic vent for priming the blood circuit, a blood pump configured to pump fluid through at least the arterial line, a first valve operable with the arterial line and a second valve operable with the venous line, and a pumping and valving algorithm operated after priming to remove air from the blood circuit to control the first and second valves and the blood pump to replace priming fluid with blood from a patient.

A dialysis system includes at least one source of fluid for dialysis, a fluid line in fluid communication with the at least one source of fluid, at least one pump positioned and arranged to pump fluid from the at least one source of fluid through the fluid line, a first patient connector configured to be removably placed in fluid communication with the fluid line to allow a blood treatment to be performed using the at least one source of fluid, and a second patient connector configured to be removably placed in fluid communication with the fluid line to allow a peritoneal dialysis treatment to be performed using the at least one source of fluid.

A renal therapy apparatus includes a blood filter, a blood pump, a treatment fluid pump, and a control unit configured to control at least one of the blood pump or the treatment fluid pump during a filter cleaning sequence. In a first phase of the filter cleaning sequence, a first fluid including a blood-compatible and physiologically safe fluid is transferred back and forth across the insides and/or outsides of the blood filter. After the first phase, a second fluid is formed by mixing the first fluid with air. In a second phase of the filter cleaning sequence, the second fluid is transferred across the insides and/or outsides of the blood filter at least one time.
