A method of forming a planetary carrier assembly is disclosed herein. In one aspect, the method includes providing a first carrier plate and a second carrier plate. The first carrier plate has a first body portion, and the second carrier plate has a second body portion including a plurality of legs. The method includes forming at least one staking element on an axial end of at least one of the plurality of legs. The method includes fixing the first carrier plate and the second carrier plate to each other via application of an axial load such that the at least one staking element on the at least one of the plurality of legs digs into the first carrier plate.

Method of forming planetary carrier assembly

A torque converter includes an impeller and a cover rotationally fixed to the impeller. The cover has opposing inner and outer surfaces and a through hole extending from the inner surface to the outer surface. A stud is attached to the cover. The stud has a head and a shank extending from the head. The head defines an annular projection circumscribing the shank and raised from the head. The stud is disposed on the cover with the shank extending through the hole to project from the outer surface and with the head being connected to the cover by coalescence between the annular projection and the inner surface creating a hermetic seal around the hole.

Torque converter with internally connected studs

A torque converter, including: a cover including a first surface facing in a first radial direction; an impeller; a stator; and a lock-up clutch including a piston plate and a seal plate including a second surface in a press fit with the first surface. The cover and the piston plate define at least a portion of a first pressure chamber. The piston plate and the seal plate define at least a portion of a second pressure chamber. The first pressure chamber and the second pressure chamber are arranged to receive and expel a fluid to axially displace the piston plate to open and close the lock-up clutch. The cover and the seal plate define a through-bore with: an end terminating at the first pressure chamber; or an end terminating at the second pressure chamber. The cover includes an edge defining an end of the through-bore.

A torque converter in a vehicle includes a cover for the torque converter, wherein the cover includes a front surface and a back surface and a stud including a head and an end with a shaft therebetween passing through an opening of a flex plate, wherein the head includes a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface include an annular projection penetrating the front surface of the cover and the bottom surface is adjacent the shaft.

A torque converter, including: a cover arranged to receive torque; an impeller including an impeller shell fixed to the cover; a turbine including a turbine shell; a stator including at least one stator blade axially disposed between the impeller shell and the turbine shell; and a lock-up clutch. The lock-up clutch includes: a piston plate non-rotatably connected to the cover; a dam plate; a centering plate axially disposed between the cover and the dam plate; a first chamber bounded at least in part by the cover and the piston plate; a second chamber bounded at least in part by the piston plate and the dam plate; a first channel connected to the first chamber and bounded at least in part by the cover and the centering plate; and a second channel connected to the second chamber and bounded at least in part by the centering plate and the dam plate.

A torque converter includes a cover having a first surface and an annular plate axially spaced from the cover and having a second surface facing the first surface. A disc of the torque converter is disposed between the cover and the plate and has opposing first and second faces adjacent to the first and second surfaces, respectfully. Each of the faces defines a projection joined to one of the first and second surfaces by at least one capacitive discharge weld.

An electric motor includes a rotor rotatable about a center axis; and a rotor carrier including an outer circumferential surface having a varying diameter defined by radially inner surface sections and radially outer surface sections. The radially outer surface sections are bonded to an inner circumferential surface of the rotor by an adhesive. A hybrid module configured for arrangement in the torque path upstream from a transmission and downstream from an internal combustion engine includes the electric motor and a torque converter including a front cover. The rotor carrier is fixed to the front cover.

A hybrid drive module, comprising a cover of a torque converter. The hybrid drive module further includes a carrier hub connected to a rotor of an electric motor and the cover, the hub including a first surface and a protrusion extending outward from the first surface. The hybrid drive module also includes an end ring disposed between the protrusion and the rotor and in contact with the first surface, wherein the end ring is engaged with the protrusion and the rotor, and the protrusion restrains the end ring and rotor utilizing an interference fit between the carrier hub and the end ring.

A hybrid drive module, comprising an annular diaphragm spring having an inner surface and one or more fingers protruding radially inward from the inner surface and a carrier hub concentric with the diaphragm spring and connected to a rotor of an electric motor and a cover of a torque converter, the carrier hub having an outer surface with one or more retention grooves configured to interlock with the one or more fingers of the diaphragm spring to inhibit axial movement of the diaphragm spring relative to the carrier hub.

A dual-exposure heat absorption panel is disclosed, which can be used in a solar receiver design. Generally, the heat absorption panel includes a tube panel through which a heat transfer fluid is flowed to absorb solar energy from heliostats that are focused on the tube panel. A structural support frame surrounds the tube panel. A stiffener structure runs across the exposed faces of the tube panel. The headers and other support structures on the periphery are protected by use of a heat shield.

A solar receiver has an arrangement of heat transfer surfaces and a heat transfer fluid phase separator, such as a vertical steam/water separator, fluidly interconnected thereto. The receiver includes a plurality of heat transfer fluid filled components, and at least one alternate heat source. When various temperature measurements indicate freezing or solidification of the fluid is possible, the alternate heat source is activated to maintain a temperature of the fluid greater than the freezing/solidification point of the fluid. The application of the alternate heat source further induces natural circulation of the fluid within the components, further providing freeze/solidification protection to the receiver. A controller may be configured to receive sensed temperatures of the fluid, components, ambient air, etc., and use these temperatures relative to a threshold temperature to activate, vary output, and deactivate one or more alternate heat sources.

Freeze protection system for solar receiver

A shop-assembled solar receiver heat exchanger having an arrangement of heat transfer surfaces and a vertical steam/water separator structurally and fluidically interconnected thereto. A vertical support structure is provided to support the vertical separator and the heat transfer surfaces. The vertical support structure is bottom supported, while the vertical steam/water separator and heat exchanger heat transfer surfaces are top supported from the vertical support structure. The vertical support structure provides structural support and rigidity for the heat exchanger and a means by which the heat exchanger can be picked up and lifted for placement at a desired location. A fabrication/transport/lifting fixture is provided which facilitates fabrication, assembly, transportation and erection of the heat exchanger from the shop to the field. The fixture supports two trunnion shafts attached to the support structure of the receiver. Lifting lugs would be located on the top end of the support structure. Upon arrival at the job site in the field, a crane lifts the heat exchanger receiver to vertical, rotating about the trunnion shafts on the fixture, and then lifts the heat exchanger receiver for placement at a desired location.

A solar receiver includes a multi-sided central assembly with wing assemblies extending from corners thereof. The central assembly includes one-sided heat absorption panels, while the wing assemblies use two-sided heat absorption panels. Stiffener structures run across the exposed faces of the various heat absorption panels.
