An apparatus comprising: a deformable antenna configured to operate in a first physical configuration and configured to operate in a second physical configuration that is deformed relative to the first physical configuration; and magnetic material located in close proximity to the deformable antenna and configured to have a first physical configuration when the deformable antenna is in its first physical configuration and configured to have a second physical configuration that is deformed relative to the first physical configuration when the deformable antenna is in its second physical configuration, wherein the magnetic material when in its first physical configuration has a first magnetic permeability and when in its second physical configuration has a second magnetic permeability.

A radio antenna assembly for use in a communication device has an antenna element disposed adjacent to a ground plane to form a physical relationship with the ground plane. A mechanical device is used to change the physical relationship for changing the operating impedance of the antenna element or shifting the frequency band of the antenna assembly. The physical relationship can be changed by mechanically changing the shape of the antenna element. When the antenna element comprises a first radiating element and a second radiating element disposed at a lateral distance from the first radiating element, the physical relationship can be changed by changing the distance. When a physical object is disposed between the antenna element and the ground plane, the physical relationship can be changed by moving or twisting the physical object. The object can be electrically conducting, dielectric or magnetic.

Mechanically tunable antenna for communication devices

The invention relates to a radio antenna and, more specifically, to an internal multiband antenna for use e.g. in a portable telecommunication device, such as a mobile phone. In particularly the invention relates to an antenna module for a mobile terminal including a non-resonant antenna element, two resonant antenna elements each covering at least any one of a first, second, third or fourth frequency band, said two resonant elements are substantially in the same plane and define a planar surface wherein the two resonant elements are each positioned at a corner of the planar surface and the non-resonant element is positioned along an edge of the planar surface.

Multiband antenna arrangement

For manufacturing an antenna there is first defined a meandering shape. A simulated current distribution is determined for a conductive line having said meandering shape. First and second segments of said meandering shape are identified, at which said simulated current distribution exhibits first and second currents respectively, so that a vector sum of said first and second currents is essentially zero. A bend containing said first and second segments is replaced with a direct connection in said meandering shape, thus producing a pruned meandering shape. The antenna will have a radiating antenna element that has a shape equal to said pruned meandering shape.
