The invention relates to a celery plant (L.) carrying a genetic determinant that leads to short leaf blades and/or a more uniform distribution of stem lengths as compared to celery plants not carrying the genetic determinant, wherein said determinant is obtainable by introgression from a plant grown from seed of which a representative sample was deposited with the NCIMB under Accession No. NCIMB 41513. The invention also relates to seeds and other propagation material of the plant and to its progeny as well as to food products that comprise the consumable parts of the plant.

Celery morphology

The invention relates to a celery plant (L.) carrying a genetic determinant that leads to short leaf blades and/or a more uniform distribution of stem lengths as compared to celery plants not carrying the genetic determinant, wherein said determinant is obtainable by introgression from a plant grown from seed of which a representative sample was deposited with the NCIMB under accession number NCIMB 41513. The invention relates to a corn salad fruit of the species, characterized by a fruit width which is smaller than 1.7 mm and/or a length/width ratio of the fruits which is higher than 1.2, and which fruit width and/or length/width ratio are/is determined by a genetic determinant which is as found in, or is obtainable from, fruits of which a representative sample was deposited under accession number NCIMB 42007, or is equivalent to the said genetic determinant in NCIMB 42007.

The invention relates to a new characteristic of lettuce which is referred to as multileaf characteristic and comprises the capacity to cause the formation in lettuce plants with a determined leaf morphology at the ready-to-harvest stage of significantly more leaves than in lettuce plants with the same leaf morphology which do not contain the characteristic. The term &ldquo;significantly more&rdquo; comprises: at least 1&frac12; times as many as a lettuce type with a comparable leaf morphology, preferably at least twice as many, more preferably at least 2&frac12; times as many, most preferably at least 200 leaves, at a ready-to-harvest stage and a determined head weight.
