A process for joining components made of metal, in particular aluminum and aluminum alloys, is such that a thermally-curable (hardenable) adhesive is deposited between the close-fitting surfaces of the components that are to be joined, and one of the outer surfaces neighboring the said close-fitting surface of one of the components is radiated with infra-red radiation in order to cure the adhesive. At least the outer surface to be radiated is provided with a pattern that roughens that surface. By reducing the reflectivity of the roughened surface the capacity to absorb infra-red radiation is increased. A preferred application for the process is in the adhesive bonding of shaped parts, especially body sheet in automobile manufacture.

An anodized aluminum product prepared by anodizing an alloy comprising 1.20-1.60% iron and 0.25-0.55% manganese with a weight ratio of iron to manganese between 2.8 and 5, up to 0.20% silicon, up to 0.30% copper, up to 5% magnesium, up to 0.10% chromium, up to 2% zinc, up to 0.25% zirconium, up to 0.10% titanium, remainder aluminum and in total up to 0.50% of other by anodic oxidation in an electrolyte at a temperature of less than 560.degree. C. for no more than 4 hours so as to produce an oxide thickness of 5 to 30 .mu.m.

A substrate for a lithographic printing plate is made of a rolled aluminum alloy sheet of following composition: 0.8 to 2.0% Fe, up to 0.8% Si and up to 1.0% Mn, such that the sum of the Si and Mn contents lies between 0.3 and 1.3%, up to 0.3% Cu, up to 0.8% Mg, up to 2.0% Zn and 0.3% each of other constituents in total up to 1.0%, rest aluminum. A process for manufacturing such a substrate is such that this composition is cast as a 5 to 12 mm thick strip then fabricated to a 0.03 to 0.6 mm thick rolled sheet.

A thin, plastically formable composite laminate features at least one metallic outer layer (14) and a core (10) of thermoplastic plastic. The metallic outer layers (14) exhibit a flat stress-strain curve which is similar to that of the plastic core (10) and is achieved by specific types of aluminum alloys and by specific alloy treatments. The, preferably 1.5-2.5 mm thick, composite laminates are employed for the manufacture of shaped parts in light weight constructions, especially in automobile, equipment and architectural applications.

0.05 to 0.2% vanadium and manganese in a concentration equal to 1/4 to 2/3 of the iron concentration are added to an aluminum wrought alloy containing 0.3-1.0% Mg, 0.3-1.2% Si, 0.1-0.5% Fe and up to 0.4% Cu. This alloy is employed mainly for the manufacture of extruded products.

A process for the preparation of a rolled aluminum product, containing iron as the predominant alloy element, which has a grain size of less than 10 .mu.m after annealing to at least 250.degree. C., in which an alloy consisting of 0.8 to 1.5% iron, up to 0.5% by weight of each of Si and Mn, the sum of Si and Mn being between 0.2 and 0.8%, up to 0.3% by weight of any other component, the total of other components being no more than 0.8% by weight, and the remainder being aluminum, is casted at a solidification rate of 2.5 to 25 cm/min, the hot plate is cooled to less than 120.degree. C. at a rate of less than 0.5 K/sec and is then cold rolled with a thickness decrease of at least 75% without intermediate annealing, and the final annealing temperature does not exceed 380.degree. C.
