A method for determining an operating parameter of an internal combustion engine. An ionic current signal curve at a spark plug of the internal combustion engine is measured for a number of ignitions as a function of time. The measured signal curves are then averaged to obtain an averaged signal curve. A maximum and/or the time of the maximum of the averaged signal curve is determined. Based on the maximum of the average signal curve and/or the time of the maximum of the average signal curve, the operating parameter is calculated.

In an air supply arrangement for an internal combustion engine, particularly for motor vehicles having devices for cooling the engine and for supplying exhaust gas secondary air to the exhaust system of the engine, a single air pump driven by an electric motor is provided for supplying air to the engine cooling system and to the exhaust system and devices for switching the air flow supplied by the air pump to either the engine cooling system or the engine exhaust system are provided. A control unit is also provided which controls the electric motor depending on the amount and pressure of the air needed for the cooling system and the engine exhaust system.

In a characteristic-diagram ignition of an internal combustion engine, knocking should be avoided even if there is a sudden change in load or speed. After the retardation has been carried out, the correction value is adjusted within a selectable time in the 'advance' direction until the instantaneously valid characteristic-diagram ignition point is reattained.

The absence of the output signal initiates an alarm and/or an adjustment of certain machine sub-systems. The arrangement can be employed for monitoring the most diverse types of sensor, for example for monitoring knock sensors in internal combustion engines.
