A coated article includes a coated surface which consists of a substrate and a coating system. The coating system has at least one protective layer consisting of one or more transition metal borides and one dopant element, wherein: 13 the protective layer having chemical element composition defined by the formula TMBSi, where TM is one or more of the transition metal elements Chromium and Hafnium; Si is Silicon present in the protective layer as the dopant element; B is Boron; x is the concentration in atomic percent of TM; y is the concentration in atomic percent of B; and q is the concentration in atomic percent of Si, where x+y+q=1, 0.15≤x≤0.33, 0.40≤y≤0.67, and 0.1≤q≤0.40, and—the atomic concentration ratio of boron to the transition metals in the protective layer is higher or equal to 2, i.e. y/x≥2, and—the protective layer exhibits an AlBcrystal structure.

A superalloy target wherein the superalloy target has a polycrystalline structure of random grain orientation, the average grain size in the structure is smaller than 20 μm, and the porosity in the structure is smaller than 10%. Furthermore, the invention includes a method of producing a superalloy target by powder metallurgical production, wherein the powder-metallurgical production starts from alloyed powder(s) of a superalloy and includes the step of spark plasma sintering (SPS) of the alloyed powder(s).

Superalloy target

A superalloy workpiece includes a superalloy substrate and an interface layer (IF-1) of essentially the same superalloy composition directly on a surface of the superalloy substrate. A transition layer (TL) of essentially the same superalloy and superalloy oxides or a different metal composition and different metal oxides is on the interface layer (IF-1). The oxygen content of the transition layer increases from the interface layer (IF-1) towards a barrier layer (IF-2) of super alloy oxides or of different metal oxides.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a multilayer film comprising aluminum, chromium, oxygen and nitrogen, in a vacuum coating chamber, the multilayer film comprising layers of type A and layers of type B deposited alternate one of each other, wherein during deposition of the multilayer film at least one target comprising aluminum and chromium is operated as cathode by means of a PVD technique and used in this manner as material source for supplying aluminum and chromium, and an oxygen gas flow and a nitrogen gas flow are introduced as reactive gases in the vacuum chamber for reacting with aluminum and chromium, thereby supplying oxygen and nitrogen for forming the multilayer film, characterized in that: &#x2014;The A layers are deposited as oxynitride layers of Al&#x2014;Cr&#x2014;O&#x2014;N by using nitrogen and oxygen as reactive gas at the same time, &#x2014;The B layers are deposited as nitride layers of Al&#x2014;Cr&#x2014;N by reducing the oxygen gas flow and by increasing the nitrogen gas flow in order to use only nitrogen as reactive gas for the formation of the Al&#x2014;Cr&#x2014;N layer, and wherein the relation between oxygen content and nitrogen content in the multilayer film correspond to a ratio in atomic percentage having a value between and including 1.8 and 4.

Al&#x2014;Cr-based ceramic coatings with increased thermal stability

A sealable volume has a wall forming at least a portion of a boundary limiting the volume. The wall includes a hydrogen permeation barrier including a layer system (LS) having at least one layer. The layer system includes at least one hydrogen barrier layer (HPBL) of an at least ternary oxide. Preferably, the oxide is substantially composed of Al, Cr and O and the hydrogen barrier layer (HPBL) is deposited using physical vapor deposition, in particular cathodic arc evaporation. Preferably, the layer system includes at least one of: an adhesion layer (AdhL), a hydrogen storage layer (HStL), a protective layer (ProtL), in particular a thermal barrier layer (ThBL), a diffusion barrier layer (DBL), an oxidation barrier layer (OxBL), a chemical barrier layer (ChBL), a wear resistance layer (WRL). Excellent hydrogen permeation barrier properties can be achieved, and the layer system can be tailored as required by an envisaged application.

In these investigations, an attempt has been made to correlate the deposition parameters of the reactive cathodic arc evaporation with processes at the surface of the composite Al&#x2014;Cr targets and the nucleation and phase formation of the synthesized Al&#x2014;Cr&#x2014;O layers. The oxygen partial pressure and the pulsed operation of the arc current influence the formation of intermetallic phases and solid solutions at the target surface. The nucleation of the ternary oxides at the substrate site appears to be, to some extent, controllable by the intermetallics or solid solutions formed at the target surface. A specific nucleation process at substrate site can therefore be induced by the free choice of target composition in combination with the partial pressure of the oxygen reactive gas. It also allows the control over the oxide island growth at the target surface which occurs occasionally at higher oxygen partial pressure. This hypothesis is supported by the X-ray diffraction analysis of the layers as well as of the target surface.

Synthesis of metal oxides by reactive cathodic arc evaporation

Provided is a coating system for a substrate, the system including a first, second and third layer. In the system, the first layer is designed as an adhesion promoter layer, the second layer is a ductile metal layer with a columnar structure and the uppermost, third layer is a ceramic oxide layer with a high hardness value. The substrate is ideally an element of a compressor component of a stationary gas turbine. Also disclosed is a method for producing the coating system.
