A method of applying a metallic guide band to the body of a projectile having particularly thin walls comprises making fine particles plastically deformable by heating thereof, and spraying said heated particles at high speed onto a surface section of the projectile body until a desired layer thickness of the guide band is attained. A projectile body having a circumferential guide band is produced by the method of the invention. The thin-walled projectile body has a boundary layer region on its exterior which may be roughened and/or deoxidized. The boundary layer region is formed by an intermediate layer which may be composed of molybdenum, nickel aluminide or nickel oxide and itself has a roughened boundary layer region on its exterior. This results in a particularly intimate physical bond with the particles of alloy of the guide band. The alloy is preferably of a CuZn85/15 type and has a porosity of up to 5 volume percent.

Method of applying a metallic guide band to a thin-walled projectile body

A projectile fired from a gun barrel, aimed in straight flight upon a small arget, has a massive armor-piercing body spacedly surrounded by a sleeve which defines with its outer surface a ring channel that may also serve as a combustion chamber for generating additional thrust. The sleeve, whose cylindrical outer periphery provides guidance in the gun barrel, is axially divided into a rear portion rigid with the massive body and a relatively slidable front portion. In an initial forward position of this front portion, an annular shutter mounted on its inner surface obstructs the ring channel by engaging an annular shoulder on the body, the sleeve then effectively acting as a sabot which blocks the escape of combustion gases from the gun blast. Upon leaving the gun barrel, the slidable front portion is forced back by the pressure of ambient air and unblocks the ring channel while simultaneously venting that channel to the surrounding atmosphere through slots provided in this portion forwardly of its valve ring.

Projectile for attacking small targets

A ballistic missile is provided with an incendiary-type payload in which the incendiary composition is distributed around the ignition channel of the projectile within a plurality of successively disposed annular containers formed from a light metal alloy. Upon detonation, the individual containers forming the payload are successively ejected from the tail of the projectile in a ring-like pattern, and remain intact upon impact with the targeted terrain whereby the desired incendiary effect continues for a prolonged predetermined time.

Incendiary payload for a heavy-duty ballistic projectile

A propellent-charge cartridge case which comprises a cartridge-case stub which has a cartridge-case wall and includes at least one part provided with a resilient gas check which can be pressed against a barrel wall. The cartridge-case wall is formed with an annular groove cut from the outside into the cartridge-case wall which weakens the cross section of the wall. A resilient insert fills the annular groove so that as gas pressure builds up within the cartridge case upon firing, the cartridge case stub is deformed in the region of the annular groove so as to reduce the size thereof and squeeze the insert out of the annular groove in gas-sealing manner against the barrel wall.
