A method of and an apparatus for the regeneration of adsorbent particles containing carbon in which the particles are introduced into downwardly moving shafts of a fluidized quartz sand bed spaced along a regenerator and are then deflected downwardly at the bottoms of the shaft by rhomboidal guide segments. The regenerated particles are withdrawn in a gas stream from above the bed and the gas is separated from the particles.

Method of and apparatus for the thermal regeneration of adsorbents

Solids from a liquid containing heavy metals are filtered by first degassing the solids-laden liquid and then subjecting the degassed liquid to sedimentation to remove large particles and subsequently intermediate size particles. The suspension of fine particles is then passed in counterflow to a moving bed of granulate, especially black peat, to which the particles tend to adhere externally and internally. Clear liquid is removed from the top of the moving bed and the granulate is washed after being withdrawn from the bottom of the bed and is recycled to the moving bed.

Apparatus for the filtering of solids-containing liquids

A carbonaceous adsorbent impreganted with elementary sulfur is produced by mixing the adsorbent with elementary sulfur in a quantity required for the desired impregnation, heating the mixture to a temperature between 120.degree. and 300.degree. C., maintaining this temperature over a time period of between 1 and 40 hours, and then cooling the mixture.

Method of manufacturing adsorbents

A method is disclosed for the adsorptive removal of H.sub.2 S from gas mixtures in C-containing adsorption agents with 1-80 bar pressures and regeneration, employing pressure lowering and/or temperature change and simultaneous rinsing with an at most negligibly absorbable component of the gas mixture. A carbon molecular sieve of fossil and/or bituminous fuel is used, with for pore diameter less than 10 nm a pore volume of 15-25 cm.sup.3 /100 g, and micropore volume in pore diameter range 0.35-10 nm less than 10 cm.sup.3 /100 g. The inner surface of the molecular screen can be freed of surface groups capable of reacting with the H.sub.2 S by aftertreatment with reducing gas.

Method for the adsorptive removal of hydrogen sulfide from gas mixtures

A bottom for a fluidized bed conveyor is composed of a plurality of members provided with openings and located in contact with each other so that their points of contact are gas impermeable at least during operation of a fluidized bed. The openings may be formed as circumferentially closed holes and/or as laterally open recesses. The members may laterally abut against each other, or may be provided with interengaging lateral projections. The members may be located so that at cold temperatures small intermediate spaces remain therebetween, which spaces are closed during operation as a result of thermal expansion of the members under the action of high working temperatures. Bracing element or elements may be provided which urge the members toward one another.

Bottom for fluidized bed

A method for the production of acetylene from coal and hydrogen is provided by electric arc heating. The coal has a content of volatile components (i.waf) from about 25 to 44 percent and a content of organic oxygen (i.waf) of less than 9 percent and is ground to a diameter of less than 0.5 mm. The coal is then separated into two to four grain size fractions and one of the grain size fractions is loaded on a hydrogen containing gas. The gas carrying the coal is heated by way of an electric arc with an energy of from about 5 to 20 kJ/l (in normal state). The ratio of electric power employed to coal stream is from about 4,000 to 40,000 kJ/kg coal. The coal is heated for a time duration about inversely proportional to the third root of the specific outer surface of the coal gain fraction. The resulting product gas is quenched with cold liquid hydrocarbons, with hydrogen or water. Acetylene yields of up to about 0.41 kg acetylene per kg coal can be obtained.

Method for production of acetylene

Apparatus for purification of waste water includes an upright adsorber filled with active carbon passing in downward direction through the adsorber while waste water flows in upward direction therethrough. A distributing arrangement is produced at the region of the lower end of the adsorber, into which waste water is fed, and constructed to assure a substantial even distribution of the waste water during its upward flow through the carbon column. A regulating arrangement is provided to regulate the flow of the carbon through the adsorber in dependence on the concentration of the organic contaminants adsorbed by the carbon.

Apparatus for purification of waste water by means of active carbon

An apparatus for purification of waste water includes an upright adsorber filled with inorganic granular adsorption material flowing in downward direction through the adsorber while waste water is fed in upward direction therethrough. The adsorber has a frustoconical outlet portion in which an inlet cone, having a perforated upwardly tapering wall, is provided into which the waste water is fed to assure a substantially even distribution of the waste water in the column of granular adsorption material during the upward flow of the waste water through the adsorber.

Method and apparatus for purification of waste water

In a process for eliminating impurities and undesirable components from gas mixtures by passing the mixture through an activated carbon-containing adsorber. Sulfur compounds including hydrogen sulfide are eliminated by increasing the oxygen contents of the gas mixture which contains at least oxygen and/or sulfur dioxide in addition to the hydrogen sulfide to an extent that a hydrogen sulfide oxygen molar ratio is obtained in the gas mixture which is between about 1:0.45 and 1:0.65. The process may also be carried out with two groups of adsorbers where in the first adsorber the elemental sulfur is eliminated in liquid form and where the remaining minor portion of sulfur in vaporous or mist-like form is then removed in the second group of adsorber or adsorbers by adsorption on the activated coal. The purified gas is then recovered from the adsorber or with two groups of adsorbers from the second group of adsorber or adsorbers and the activated carbon is subjected to periodic regeneration cycles.

Process for eliminating hydrogen sulfide from gas mixtures

The floor in a whirl (i.e. fluidizing) chute for treating solid particles in a vortex of gas advancing in longitudinal direction of the chute comprises a grate for introducing into the chute the whirling gas to impart to the particles a whirling motion in vertical direction and to advance the whirling particles in longitudinal direction, and at least one layer of filling bodies arranged on the grate in the direction of advance of the particles whereby the size of the filling bodies and the height of the layer is adjusted according to desired whirling speed of the treated particles.

Apparatus for purification of waste water includes an upright adsorber filled with active carbon passing in downward direction through the adsorber while waste water flows in upward direction therethrough. A distributing arrangement at the region of the lower end of the adsorber, into which waste water is fed, is provided to assure a substantial even distribution of the waste water during its upward flow through the carbon column. Furthermore, a regulating arrangement is provided to regulate the flow of the carbon through the adsorber in dependence on the concentration of the organic contaminants adsorbed by the carbon.

A carbonaceous adsorbent in the form of a shaped body which has been heated to about 400 to 1400.degree. C in an inert atmosphere is composed essentially of a mixture of finely divided carbonaceous material of a grain size below 50 and up to below 100 microns with a binder composed of about 1 to 20% by weight of a natural or synthetic elastomer and about 1 to 15% by weight of a thermoplastic material. The adsorbent is made by subjecting the mixture to a shaping step followed by heating to a temperature of about 400.degree. to 1400.degree. C in an inert atmosphere which step may be followed by an activation of the carbonaceous material.

Carbonaceous adsorbents and process for making same

An apparatus for performing the method of the invention for the thermal regeneration of contaminated particulate adsorption agents in a fluidized state includes a regeneration chamber which has separate first and second zones for the thermal treatment of the adsorption agents in a fluidized state. A first inlet is provided for admitting contaminated adsorption agents into the first zone and a separate second inlet is provided for admitting contaminated adsorption agents into the second zone. A first outlet is provided for removing regenerated adsorption agents from the first zone whereas a separate second outlet is provided for removing regenerated adsorption agents from the second zone. Means for fluidizing and thermally treating the contaminated adsorption agents so as to regenerate the same includes a combustion chamber arranged to supply hot fluidizing gases to both of the treatment zones. A gas outlet in the regeneration chamber serves to exhaust the fluidizing gases from both of the treatment zones.

Method of regenerating particulate adsorption agents

A housing has a foraminous floor adapted to support a bed of adsorption particles. A plurality of baffles spaced above this floor subdivide the bed into a plurality of compartments. Impurity-carrying particles are fed to the compartment at one end of the elongated chamber and the particles overflow a weir at the compartment at the other end of the chamber. A hot gas is passed up through the bed in all of the chambers to deadsorb the particles and the baffles are spaced so that in the direction of flow each baffle projects more deeply into the bed to flow the flow toward the outlet end. A gas above the furthest upstream compartment is collected and condensed to recover useful constituents, and the gas from the other compartments is burned. It is possible to provide an upstream and a downstream compartment at an upper level and below them several downstream compartments, with the gas from the downstream compartments flowing up through the two upper compartments. The chamber has a length equal to at least twice its width and preferably equal to approximately the same multiple of its width as number of compartments it is divided into.
