In a circuit for deriving at least one quality signal that is dependent on the quality of a received signal, where the received signal is demodulated, a first auxiliary signal which is dependent on the field strength, and a second or further auxiliary signal, are derived from the demodulated signal. The auxiliary signal and the second or further auxiliary signal are combined to derive the quality signal.

In a demodulator for a stereo signal transmitted by amplitude and phase modulation of a carrier, a phase signal and a quantity signal are formed. By multiplication of the quantity signal with the tangent of the phase signal reduced by a value to be preset, a difference signal is formed. The value to be preset is generated in such a way as to minimize the direct portion of the difference signal.

Demodulator

In a circuit for a demodulator of a radio data signal in a radio receiver, the multiplex signal in digital form is mixed into the baseband, in two phase positions shifted 90.degree. with respect to each other, after band-pass filtering, together with a reference carrier generated at a sampling clock rate produced in the radio receiver, thus producing a first and a second mix signal. A first and a second auxiliary signal with, respectively, a sine waveform and a cosine waveform are produced. The first mix signal is multiplied by the first auxiliary signal, and the second mix signal by the second auxiliary signal. The results of these multiplications are added together, producing a first output signal. The first mix signal is multiplied by the second auxiliary signal, and the second mix signal by the first auxiliary signal, and the results subtracted from each other, thus producing a second output signal. The phase position of the auxiliary signals is controlled in such a manner that the first output signal corresponds to the radio data signal (RDS) shifted down into the baseband.

In a radio receiver with an input circuit which can be supplied with received signals, with a mixer for deriving an IF signal, and with an IF filter, the passband range corresponds to a usable signal range of the received signal, the received signals are amplitude-modified with an auxiliary signal for detecting intermodulation, in the course of which sidebands are generated outside of the useful signal range. The amplitudes of at least one sideband generated by modulation with the auxiliary signal and of the received carrier are compared in the IF signal. In case of deviations from a ratio based on the modulation factor during modulation with the auxiliary signal, a signal indicating the presence of intermodulation is derived.

In a circuit for decoding a multiplex signal in a stereo receiver, where the multiplex signal contains a composite signal (L+R) in the base band, a subcarrier modulated with a difference signal (L-R), and a pilot signal with half the frequency of the subcarrier, the multiplex signal in digital form is multiplied (2, 3) by a reference carrier generated with a sampling clock signal (14) produced in the radio receiver, where the reference carrier is present in two phase positions shifted 90.degree. with respect to each other. The mix or product signals resulting from this multiplication are multiplied (4, 5) by one correction signal each, thus forming corrected mix signals. The corrected mix signals are added (6) and supplied to a matrix circuit (8, 9), together with the composite signal, to create respective stereo audio channel signals (L, R).

A radio data system (RDS) receiver has a station selector circuit including a microprocessor, several Alternative Frequency (AF) memory cells, and at least one learning memory cell associated with each AF memory cell. In a preferred embodiment, a counter is associated with each learning memory cell. The AF memory cells store alternative frequencies decoded from a Radio Data System signal. As each station is tuned successfully, i.e. with adequate signal strength, its frequency is stored in one of the learning memory cells. When signal deterioration requires a skip to a new frequency, the 'skip frequencies' stored in the learning memory cells are preferred to other frequencies. The counters keep track of how many times, since power-up, each frequency has been successfully tuned, and the frequency with the highest count is the 'most preferred' alternative frequency.

The Radio Data System (RDS) protocol promulgated by the European Broadcasting Union provides for alternate frequencies (AF) for the same broadcast. Receivers periodically switch over to such an alternate frequency, leading to momentary crackling noises. In a radio receiver having a device for temporary switchover from a received frequency to some other frequency, substitute signals are inserted into the audio signals that are interrupted during the temporary switchover. The substitute signals are formed from the audio signals before and optionally also after the temporary switchover.

In an A/D converter for electrical signals, the difference, between the instantaneous analog input signal Y(t) and a previous analog signal value Y(t-T), is converted in a fast analog-to-digital converter (3) to a digital sum value. This sum value is added to the preceding digital value, stored in a buffer memory (7, 7'), and the result is fed to a slow but precise D/A converter (2) for generation of the next Y(t-T) value. This has the advantage that good results can be obtained with A/D converters less expensive than those heretofore required to obtain such results.

Method and apparatus for analog/digital conversion

In a circuit arrangement for deriving a binary signal from an alternating voltage (U), in which the alternating voltage can be delivered via a capacitor to the input of a threshold value circuit and a reference voltage obtained by integration serves to adjust the operating point at the input, an up/down counter is provided for deriving the reference voltage, its counting direction being controllable by the binary signal. From the output signal of the up/down counter, a further binary signal is derived, which after integration forms the reference voltage. The circuit is suitable for use in evaluating the data subcarrier component of a Radio Data System (RDS) signal, as defined by European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Technical Standard 3244-E.

An improved FM car radio includes a recognition circuit for detecting intermittent multipath reception from the audio frequency signal, rather than from the intermediate frequency signal, as in prior art detectors. The output signal of the stereo decoder 6 is fed to a recognition circuit containing a 90.degree. phase shifter 14, a multiplier circuit 15, a low-pass filter 16, a rectifier 17, and another low-pass filter 18. The resulting output signal U.sub.q is a measure of the quality of the signal, and can be used to initiate re-tuning to an alternate transmitter. For faster response, the recognition circuit can include a second signal path and a quotient former stage 23, resulting in an output signal U.sub.q *. Either U.sub.q or U.sub.q * is fed back to a threshold value stage 19 for evaluation.

Stereo radio receiver multipath disturbance detection circuit

For elimination of pulse type interference in an FM receiver by intermittent blanking of the received signal while interfering pulses are present and substitution of a synthetic signal during the blanking intervals, the synthetic signal substituted during the blanking intervals is produced by interpolation using finite duration impulse response digital filters, instead of using the last undisturbed value of the received signal modified by integration of its last value of rate of change with respect to time. The determination of the blanking interval is optimized by reference to the maximum and minimum peak values of the output of an AM detector of the received signal and comparing an interference signal magnitude thus obtained with a threshold value of the interference signal, so as to define the blanking interval as the interval during which the interference signal exceeds the reference signal value. The interference signal compared with the reference value is produced by computing the sum and product of the maximum and minimum peak values, adding the product to the output of the squarer operating on the output of the AM demodulator, multiplying the sum of the maximum and minimum peak values by the AM demodulator output, dividing the product plus squarer sum by the multiplied output of the AM demodulator, forming the arc cosine of the output of the divider and then differentiating the arc cosine value.

Method and apparatus for reducing interference in broadcast receiver

Intermediate frequency FM signals are converted to digital form and the digital words of successive samples are clocked into a three place shift register. The sum of the values in the first and third stages of the register is divided by the value in the middle stage and the quotient values are then averaged by groups or as a moving average to provide the demodulated signal. Errors in the operation of the divider circuit can be avoided by detecting null values of the content of the middle cell of the shift register to suppress erroneous quotients, or else the values from which the quotients are formed are both squared before dividing. In the latter case the dc component can be eliminated from the output by subtracting a constant.

Digital FM demodulator

The location coordinates, as well as the transmitting station frequencies, of stations that broadcast the same programs by network arrangements or otherwise, are stored so that when a particular program (network) is selected, all these stations broadcasting the same program as a station being listened to which are not more than a prescribed maximum distance from the station being listened to, may be listed in a table in a working store. While a particular station is being listened to, therefore, continuous checking of the station being listened to with other stations broadcasting the same program for relative reception quality can be carried out automatically while a station is being listened to in a moving vehicle, without taking into account the signals broadcast by stations that are too far away. As soon as some other station broadcasting the same program is found to provide better reception, it is automatically tuned in, and from then on the distance criterion is referred to the location of the new station, a new set of stations for signal comparison is selected and the comparative signal checking process is continued automatically.
