In a process for the chemical pretreatment before painting of composite metal structures that contain aluminum or aluminum alloy portions together with steel, galvanized steel and/or alloy-galvanized steel portions, in a first step the metal structure is treated with a zinc phosphating solution that forms a surface-covering crystalline zinc phosphate layer on steel and on galvanized or alloy-galvanized steel, but without forming a zinc phosphate layer on the aluminum portions, and then in a second step the metal structure is brought into contact with a treatment solution that does not excessively dissolve the crystalline zinc phosphate layer on steel, galvanized and/or alloy-galvanized steel, but forms a conversion layer on the aluminum portions.

A process for regenerating and recycling aqueous alkaline or neutral degreasing and cleaning solutions contaminated with emulsified oils by adding thereto cationic surfactants or cationically modified polymers or a combination of cationic surfactants and cationically modified polymers to break the emulsions. The contaminants which precipitate are mechanically separated off and the cleaning solution is thereby regenerated without loss of cleaning efficacy.

Aqueous compositions containing as essential ingredients; an alkanolamine, an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing 5 to 18 carbon atoms, and an arylenetriazole have been found effective in removing resin-containing sealants from the surfaces of zinc containing metals, such as galvanized steel, without causing changes in the surfaces of the metal, so that phosphate coatings which are subsequently applied to said surfaces are neither streaky nor spotty.

Polyethylene glycol ethers of the type obtained by the addition of from 4 to 20 parts by weight of ethylene oxide onto 1 part by weight of polyglycerol having a hydroxyl number in the range from 900 to 1200 and subsequent etherification of the free hydroxyl groups with linear or branched alkyl halides containing from 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and their use as foam-inhibiting additives for low-foam cleaning agents.
