A retarder with retarder housing for receiving a retarder unit comprising a stator and a rotor fitted on the retarder shaft. The retarder is intended for assembly in a transmission housing. The retarder housing features a cup-shaped recess matching in its design the outer contours of rotor and stator, (a preassembled retarder unit) thus being able to receive the retarder unit in an assembled state.

Retarder

A drive unit for a vehicle which includes an engine, transmission and hydrodynamic retarder having a rotor and a stator. A retarder shaft is rotatably supported by two bearings and extends through the housing of the transmission. A sealing element provides a seal between the retarder shaft and the transmission housing for separating the operating medium of the hydrodynamic retarder from either the transmission lubricant or the lubricant for one of the two shaft bearings.

The invention relates to a drive unit for a motor vehicle having a hydrodynamic retarder and a drive train with an engine and a transmission. The hydrodynamic retarder is comprised of a rotor impeller wheel and a stator impeller wheel and is coordinated with the main drive train in a manner such that the rotor impeller wheel of the hydrodynamic retarder is driven by the drive train. The operating fluid of the hydrodynamic retarder is a medium used for cooling the vehicle and a clutch is arranged between the drive train and the hydrodynamic retarder.

The retarder is located within a space bounded on one side by the front of the crankcase, on a second side by the fan shaft which runs parallel to the engine shaft, and on a third side by the rear edge of the fan wheel. Viewed from the front, the retarder is substantially located within the fly circle of the fan wheel whereby the air flow generated by the fan wheel removes heat, generated by braking actions, from the housing of the retarder.

The invention relates to a braking system, specifically for a motor vehicle, with a hydrodynamic retarder featuring a stator impeller wheel and a rotor impeller wheel, a working medium sump, and a control device for controlling the degree of working space filling of the retarder. The control device includes a proportional valve as well as a connecting line to the sump, and the sump communicates with the working space of the retarder by way of a riser duct. A venting duct communicable with the sump whereby air pressure generated by the non-braking operation of the retarder can be vented from the sump to the atmosphere thereby providing a pressure balance of the forces acting on the level of the working medium sump.
