Improved branched carbonate polymer blend compositions are prepared comprising a branched carbonate polymer component and a different linear carbonate polymer component. The branched carbonate polymers according to the invention are especially suitable for use in extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming and foaming processes and provide improved parts or articles.

The diposphines have the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 independently from each other represent a hydrocarbyl group which is substituted with one or more radicals selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl and alkoxy, and A is --C(O)--, --S(O).sub.2 --, --S(O)-- or certain divalent organic groups. The diphosphines are useful for stabilizing thermoplastic polymers, such as polycarbonates, against thermal discoloration.

The resin has a polymeric matrix and functional groups of formula I wherein the radicals have the meaning stated in claim 1. The resin is prepared by reacting a corresponding resin having functional groups of formula II with HC(O)R.sup.2 and (R.sup.3).sub.2 SO.sub.3 or (R.sup.3).sub.2 S.sub.2 O.sub.5. The resin is useful for reducing the concentration of alkaline earth or transition metal ions in a solution.

Aminomethylphosphonic chelating resins are prepared by amination, hydrolysis and methylphosphonation of haloalkylated polymer beads. The amination of the haloalkylated polymer beads is carried out with hexamethylenetetramine. The produced haloaminated beads are hydrolysed and methylphosphonated in one single step without addition of a substantial amount of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde releasing compound.
