A battery disconnection system (10) for a motor vehicle comprising a rod (12) having a longitudinal axis (A), an external threaded surface (14) extending from one end and a cylindrical member (16) extending coaxially with the rod (12), from the other end. Reversible drive means (20,22,24) engage the threaded surface (14). A first annular member (30) coaxial and in sliding contact with the cylindrical member (16). A second annular member (32) coaxial and in sliding contact with the cylidrical member (16). Either annular member being connectable with a motor vehicle battery. The other annular member being connectable with a starter motor and/or a generator (38) of a motor vehicle. The reversible drive means (20,22,24) moves the rod (12) in a longitudinal direction (X) between a first position in which the cylindrical member (16) engages and electrically connects the annular members (30,32) for normal operation of the motor vehicle, and a second position in which the cylindrical member (16) is disengaged from one of the annular members (30,32) during sensed adverse conditions such as a vehicle crash.

Battery disconnection system

A battery disconnection system (10) for mounting directly on a terminal (12) of a battery (16) of a motor vehicle comprising a housing (32); a battery terminal connector (17) secured to the housing; a normally closed electrical switch (20) mounted inside the housing; an electrical conductor (18) connected to the battery terminal connector and to one side (21) of the switch; one or more fuses (28) mounted inside the housing, and connected between the other side (23) of the switch and output terminals (29) mounted on the housing; a sensor (22) for detecting an adverse condition; an electromagnetically operated device (24) mounted inside the housing and electrically connected to the sensor, mechanically connected to the switch, and actuable on receipt of an adverse condition signal from the sensor to open the switch; and a manual control (26) mounted on the housing and mechanically connected to the switch for manually operating the switch. A fuse assembly (10) for mounting on a battery of a motor vehicle comprising a housing (12) of electrically insulating material having a base plate (22); a starter motor cable terminal (18) mounted on the base plate; a number of cable harness terminals (20); a fuse strip (14) secured on the base plate and including a busbar (36), a contact portion (40) adjacent the starter motor cable terminal, contact portions (38) making an electrical connection with each cable harness terminal, and fusible links (42) connecting the contact portions with the busbar; and a battery terminal clamp (16) having a mounting portion (26) positioned inside the housing and making an electrical connection with the busbar of the fuse strip, and a clamp portion (28) positioned outside the housing for making an electrical connection with a terminal post of the battery. Provides a compact fuse assembly for a motor vehicle.
