An electrical component includes a base object made of two insulating objects with curved external surfaces, and external electrodes. Each of the external electrodes is disposed adjacent to one of the two insulating objects. A central electrode is disposed inside of the base object. The central electrode includes a flat mounting surface on an exterior of the component.

To adapt a three-electrode arrester having copper electrodes to high switching capacities (200 Amp a.c. current per discharge gap simultaneously for 11 cycles at 60 Hz), the following measures are provided: The cylindrical end electrodes have a volume of at least 60 mm.sup.3, given a ratio of length (L.sub.2) to diameter (D.sub.2) of less than 2.5; the middle electrode has the shape of a hollow cylinder with end regions of a reduced wall thickness; the middle electrode and the hollow cylindrical insulators are soldered to one another at the front ends.

In order to guarantee that the gas atmosphere of the structure of an encapsulated spark gap (9) is reliably protected from the effect of moisture, two flat discharge surfaces of two dish-type electrodes (1,6), each designed with a collar-shaped rim (2), abut on both sides of a thin insulating layer (4) having punched holes. A tubular glass insulator (3) is sealed on the front side into the collar-shaped rims of the two electrodes. During the course of their manufacturing, the electrodes are placed with their collar-shaped rim on the front sides of the glass insulator, are inductively heated and, under the action of an axially directed pressing force, are driven toward one another and pressed against the insulating layer. A spark gap of this type can be used as a secondary discharge gap for triple-electrode arresters.

Encapsulated spark gap and method of manufacturing

A gas-filled three-electrode overvoltage arrester may be developed in such a manner that it has dependable 'fail-safe' and 'vent-safe' behavior. For this purpose, a two-arm spring clip (10) is fastened to the center electrode (1). The ends of the two-arm spring clip (10) rest, with the interpositioning of a spacer (20, 21; 22, 23), against the ends of the end electrodes (2, 3). The end of each arm of the spring clip bears a cap (14, 15) which is provided with a flange-like edge (16, 17). One end of the connecting wire (6, 7) of each end electrode has the shape of a ring (61, 71) which is fastened at the end side to the end electrode. The ring of the connecting wire and the flange-like edge of the cap are opposite each other and are held apart by a disk-shaped fusible pellet (20, 22) and a cylindrical part (21, 23) having insulating properties. The cylindrical part consists either of a temperature-resistant insulating material or of a metal-oxide varistor.

As a known 'back-up device' for a gas-filled over-voltage arrester, a voltage-dependent resistor (6) is arranged centrally in a housing with the over-voltage arrester (1). The varistor (6) can, in this connection, be sealed with a moisture-repelling substance and it is arranged concentrically to a connecting pin (5) of the over-voltage arrester. By means of an auxiliary electrode (8) of annular disk shape placed on the varistor (6), an air gap (13) from the connecting pin (5) can be formed. The varistor, after its response, can be short-circuited via this air gap.

Assembly for the discharge of electric overvoltages

A triggerable switching spark gap has two main electrodes, which are insulated from each other, and a galvanically controllable trigger electrode, which is configured in the center of a circular opening of one main electrode. A clearance (a) between the two main electrodes is greater by the factor 1.1 to 2.3, preferably by the factor 1.4 to 1.7, than the width (b) of the ring gap between the trigger electrode and the corresponding main electrode. Furthermore, the circumferential edge of the trigger electrode (6) arranged to be flush with the discharge surface of the corresponding main electrode has a radius of curvature less than or equal to 0.1 mm and the trigger electrode and the corresponding main electrode are coated with a silver-containing activating mass. The delay time of the switching spark gap is able to be reduced to values less than or equal to 0.5 .mu.s.

Overvoltage arrester having a gas-filled housing wherein, spaced from one another by a tubular insulator, cylindrical electrodes ending frustoconically are disposed opposite one another and are formed, in a region of active surfaces thereof, with walls that are thicker than conical side walls thereof located in a region of transition to the insulator, at least one line of electrically conductive material being disposed at the inner surface of the tubular insulator and extending as an ignition line in direction from the one cylindrical electrode to the other, the electrodes and the insulator being receivable in a metallic sleeve acting as a socket at ground potential and having a movable surrounding cage, including a metallic sleeve for receiving the electrodes and the insulator, the sleeve serving as a socket and having a movable cage substantially concentrically and closely surrounding the electrodes and the insulator, one of the electrodes being a wire or pin electrode and the other electrode being a hollow electrode and having a rear space wherein low vapor deposition occurs, the ignition line being electrically conductively connected to the one electrode and terminating in the rear space of the other electrode, the electrodes being disposed relative to one another so that an approximately equal spacing is provided between the electrodes and between the other electrode and the ignition line.

Overvoltage arrester having a gas-filled housing, including two overvoltage arrester electrodes disposed across from each other in the housing, a tubular insulator body spacing the overvoltage arrester electrodes apart from each other, a ring-shaped flange integral with one of the overvoltage arrester electrodes forming a first spark gap electrode, a ring-shaped metal cap forming a second spark gap electrode being superimposed on the first spark gap electrode and pressed in on the tubular insulator body, the first and second spark gap electrodes forming a spark gap having a given clearance therebetween, and a contact spring connecting the second spark gap electrode to the other of the overvoltage arrester electrodes.

A surge arrester, includes a gas-filled housing, copper electrodes disposed opposite each other in the housing, the electrodes each including a relatively thin-walled truncated conical part having a flange integral therewith and a solid cylindrical part, the cylindrical parts each having a respective end surface facing each other, the end surfaces being mutually spaced apart by a given distance and each having a trough-shaped axially-symmetrical depression formed therein, a highly active electrode activating compound filling each of the depressions, a tubular ceramic insulator at least partly surrounding the electrodes defining respective annular gaps between the insulator and each of the cylindrical parts having widths being substantially between 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm, the gaps including rear spaces being low in vapor depositions, the insulator having end surfaces being vacuum-tightly hard soldered to the flanges, and at least one ignition line disposed on the insulator and respectively projecting into each of the gaps and into the rear spaces by at least 1.5 mm, the given distance between the end surfaces of the cylindrical parts being at most 3.5 times the width of one of the gaps in vicinity of the at least one ignition line, the electrodes defining a discharge space including the gaps having a volume of at least 20 mm.sup.3.
