A weapon system includes a weapon having a chamber; a data input device; an aiming mechanism; and an ammunition unit that can be fired with the weapon. The ammunition unit includes a data memory for storing ammunition-specific data; and a microcontroller arranged on or in the ammunition unit and being connected, when the ammunition unit is inside the chamber of weapon, to the data input device, the aiming mechanism and the data memory. The microcontroller determines aiming signals necessary to control the aiming mechanism as a function of ammunition-specific, target-specific, and weapon-specific data transmitted to the microcontroller. The microcontroller transmits the aiming signals to the aiming mechanism.

Weapon system

A weapon system (1) having a weapon (2) with a weapon tube (3) and having an electronic system (4) for generating aiming signals for an aiming system (7) connected to the weapon (2). To ensure that the current weapon properties or tube properties are also considered in a simple manner for the determination of the aiming signals, the respective weapon-specific data are stored on a chip card (13) associated with the weapon (2) and are transferred via a chip card reader (11) to the corresponding electronic system (4) required for the determination of the aiming signals. During this process, the weapon-specific data are updated on the chip card at predetermined time intervals.

A method for aiming the weapon (4) of a weapon system (1) with an aiming system (5) and a heat imaging device (6) while considering external influences acting on the projectiles to be fired into a target region (3). In order to accomplish that influences acting on the projectiles (2) during their flight into the target region (3) are considered in a simple manner for the aiming of the weapon (4), the amount of lateral deviation (13) of the point of impact (11) of the projectile from a predetermined point of aim (12) of the weapon (4)is determined by measuring or tracking the tracer (10) of the projectile (2) by the heat imaging device (6). The amount of lateral deviation (13) thus determined is then compensated for in the subsequent firing by a corresponding lateral aiming correction of the weapon (4). A drive member for the projectile head of a large caliber, multi-purpose cartridge or a multi-purpose training cartridge, wherein a threaded connection is provided for the form-locking connection between the drive member and the projectile head. In order to give such multi-purpose cartridges or corresponding multi-purpose training cartridges a modular configuration, with their assembly taking place only at their location of use, the drive member is provided with radial bores that start at its outer edge or periphery at its end facing the projectile head. Before joining the projectile head and the drive member, a holding and clamping device is then introduced into these bores so as to securely hold the drive member when the respective projectile head is screwed to the drive member.

A subcaliber kinetic energy projectile (1) including a penetrator (2) and a segmented sabot (3) which is provided with a front support (4) and with a second support (5) that is disposed at an axial distance behind the first support, with the second support (5) including a rotationally symmetrical air pocket (6) that faces the first support (4) and the first support (4) is provided with air passage openings (43, 44, 45).In the sabot, the relationship of L/D.gtoreq.1.2 exists between the length L of the penetrator tip (8) ahead of the first support (4) and the caliber D. The relationship x.gtoreq.0.45 * .iota. further applies between the distances x and .iota., with x being the distance between the trailing edge (10) of the sabot and the base surface (11) of the air pocket (6) in the second support (5) and .iota. being the distance between the trailing edge (10) of the sabot (3) and the leading edge (12) of the sabot at the surface of the penetrator (2). Finally, the first support (4) is composed of at least three laterally extending web-like components (40-42) whose shape and dimensions are such that they form and have the effect of three separate air pockets.

Subcaliber kinetic energy projectile

A wall of, for example, a bombshelter or armored vehicle, is provided with an inner and outer armor spaced from each other. This armor protection is designed to provide a deflection, respectively destruction of an impacting projectile as soon as the projectile nose has penetrated the outer armor. The arrangement is designed to permit only a relative minor destruction of the outer armor in the impacted region, so that those regions adjoining the impacted region maintain their protective structural integrity. This object is achieved in that in the partial chambers which are divided by transverse walls defining closed intermediate chambers between both armors there is disposed a material insert which explodes or bursts as a result of the penetration of the projectile, for example, a material insert consisting of an explosive, glass or ceramic material. The outer armor consists of plates which are overlappingly arranged at one of the adjoining sides and which swing outwardly. These plates can be suspended by means of hinges A on a post E of the outer armor and can be held in position by means of shear pins C at their opposite sides. The material insert G is disposed between the outer and inner armor.

A warhead including a shell which encloses the explosive charge and a projectile forming liner with the liner being disposed so that its circumferential surface lies against an intermediate ring which, in turn, is fastened to the shell. To avoid undefinable spalling effects in the region of the boundary surfaces between the liner and the shell, which could result in asymmetrical tail formation for the projectile produced by the detonative resharping of the liner, the intermediate ring and the liner have the same acoustic impedance.

A subcaliber projectile including a penetrator preferably made of tungsten eavy metal, and having a penetrator tip section and a section following thereafter and extending over the major portion of the penetrator length which is provided with an external thread (helical groove) or circumferential annular grooves to provide a form-locking connection with a discardable propelling cage sabot. To realize improved piercing power for the penetrator, the form-locking region is composed of annular grooves without a pitch, or of a fine metric thread having a thread valley, with a width of approximately one to three times the base width of the groove defining wall or of a thread peak. Preferably a more brittle material is employed in the front penetrator region than in the tail region, and a further indentation structure is incorporated in the first frontal thread turns or grooves of the form-locking region.

Liner for a warhead with protruding central portion

A warhead for enclosing an explosive charge includes a casing for surrounding the charge. The casing has an end presenting a frontal face. A liner having a circumferential area for attachment to the end of the casing and a coefficient of thermal expansion .alpha..sub.R is fastened to the casing by way of an intermediate ring connected to the circumferential area of the liner. The intermediate ring has a portion which is brought around the frontal face of the casing and which has a pressure face which presses against the exterior of the casing. The liner has a coefficient of thermal expansion .alpha..sub.E which is at least as great as the coefficient of thermal expansion .alpha..sub.R of the intermediate ring.

An active munition element for combatting a target provided with a jamming device, the element including: a front charge; a rear charge mounted behind the front charge and having a hollow charge element; components connected for actuating each charge, the front charge being operative for developing kinetic energy in the target so as to neutralize the jamming device and the rear charge being actuated after the front charge to be effective against the target without interference; and a tube defining a narrow longitudinal channel having a smaller diameter than, and coaxial with, the rear charge, the channel extending forwardly from the rear charge and having a front end region housing the front charge.

Active element for combating, in particular, active armored targets

An explosive charge including a body and an insert disposed within the body and having given regions which are uniformly distributed around the center of the insert which differ from their respective immediately adjacent regions for forming, upon explosive conversion of the charge, a rod-shaped projectile which has a tail end with shaped portions for providing aerodynamic stabilization of the trajectory of the projectile. The insert is fastened to the body in an essentially band-shaped contact zone disposed between the insert and the body so that there exists between the insert and the body a strong force transfer capability at the given regions and a weaker to negligible force transfer capability between the given regions.

An improved nose construction for a subcaliber inertial projectile which is ired with the aid of a sabot. A hood or body is mounted on the nose portion of the projectile. The hood is made of synthetic material and includes longitudinally extending fracture zones and is of substantially cylindrical shape. The frontal portion of the hood is recessed and forms an air flow receiving surface. In lieu of a hood a body, made of a thermoplastic material or the like, may be mounted on the nose portion. This body is adapted to disintegrate as result of air friction. The presence of the hood or body on the nose portion of the projectile, as it exits from a non-illustrated gun barrel, avoids or at least reduces unfavorable air-streaming forces which destabilize the flight characteristics of the projectile and thereby favors a uniform separation of the sabot segments from the projectile. Such uniform separation reduces or completely eliminates undesirable oscillations during flight of the projectile. After the hood or body have disintegrated the projectile acquires a more favorable c.sub.w value (drag coefficient during flight.

Nose for an inertial projectile

A penetrator for a subcaliber impact or inertial projectile, especially a projectile adapted to pierce or break an armored target, which comprises a core of comparatively high density within a metallic housing or shell and in which the core is subdivided along a longitudinal axis into at least two core parts with the core parts being encased in respective sheaths which prevent transmission of cracks from one part to another, a spacing being formed between the parts by at least one sheath and having a thickness corresponding at least to the thickness of one sheath.
