Novel ionically modified polysaccharides which contain .alpha.-glycosidic linkages, the ionic groups of which are attached to the polysaccharide component through the grouping of the formula

Novel chemically modified anionic polysaccharides which contain acid radicals of the formula ##STR1## attached to the polysaccharide component, wherein R.sub.1.sup..crclbar. is carboxyalkyl or dicarboxyalkyl containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, or is carboxyphenyl or ketocarboxymethyl, and Q.sub.1.sup..sym. is a water-soluble cation, are obtained by reacting the polysaccharides with compounds that contain N-methylolamide groups, in particular with novel compounds of formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1.sup..crclbar. and Q.sub.1.sup..sym. have the given meanings, and are used for purifying effluents and, in particular, for the separation by chromatography of mixtures of substances which contain amphoteric or cationic components.

C. of 4 to 6 ml/g.

An anionic adsorbent which has been prepared by reacting (a) a monomeric compound which contains at least one anionic group and at least one amide group, especially a carboxamide group, which can be methylolated, with (b) an aminoplast precondensate which is free from salt-forming anionic groups.
