Disclosed is the use of an aqueous dispersion comprising (a) a micronized sparingly soluble organic benzophenone derivative of formula (1), selected from the crystal modifications (B) and (C), wherein the crystal modification (B) is characterized by a peak in the X-ray diffraction pattern at a d-spacing of about 7.70; and wherein the crystal modification (C) is characterized by a peak in the X-ray diffraction pattern at a d-spacing of about 7.06; and (b) a dispersing agent selected from anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants; for protecting the human skin from browning and skin aging. The new crystal modification (C) represents a thermodynamically stable compound of formula (1) at 25&#xb0; C. This modification is therefore suitable in dispersions comprising micro-fine particles.

Disclosed are hydroxyphenylbenzophenone derivatives of formula (1), wherein Rand Rindependently from each other are hydrogen; C-Calkenyl; C-Ccycloalkyl; or Rand Rtogether with the linking nitrogen atom form a 5- 6-membered heterocyclic ring; R, Rand Rindependently from each other are C-Calkyl; C-Calkoxy; or a radical of formula (1a) Ris C-Calkyl; and A is a straight-chain or branched C-Calkylene, which is optionally interrupted by one or more *&#x2014;O&#x2014;*, or *&#x2014;O&#x2014;(CO)&#x2014;* groups; and m is 0; or a number from 1 to 5. The compounds are useful as cosmetic UV filters with outstanding solubility properties in cosmetic oils.

The compounds are useful as UV filters in sunscreen applications.

Amino substituted hydroxyphenyl benzophenone derivatives

UV absorber compositions are described, comprising (a) from 1 to 99% by weight of a hydroxyphenyltriazine compound of formula (I) wherein R, Rand Rare each independently of the others C-Calkyl; C-C,alkenyl; or phenyl-C-Calkyl; Ris hydrogen; or C-Calkyl; and (b) from 99 to 1% by weight of a further UV absorber selected from the group of (b) hydroxyphenyltriazines that are different from component (a), (b) benzotriazoles, (b) dibenzoylmethane derivatives and (b) camphor derivatives. The compositions are suitable as UV filters in cosmetic compositions

Benzotriazole derivatives of formula ##STR1## or triazines of formula ##STR2## wherein R is hydrogen or chloro; R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl or phenyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl; R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or SO.sub.3 M; A.sub.1 is a radical of formula ##STR3## R.sub.3 is a radical of formula ##STR4## R.sub.4 is halogen; or a radical of formula ##STR5## Q.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl; R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are each independently of one another hydrogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkoxy; halogen; hydroxy; or a radical of formula ##STR6## Hal.sup.- ; where the substituents are as defined herein, are distinguished by good substantivity for human hair while at the same time providing effective protection against UV radiation.

Use of selected benzotriazole and triazine derivatives for protecting

A process is described for the preparation of an aryl-1,3-5-triazine compound of formula (1). This process comprises reacting an aldehyde compound of formula (2) with biuret, compound of formula (3), in hydrochloric medium or with methyl sulfate (1.sup.st reaction step), then oxidizing the resulting compound of formula (4) to the compound of formula (5) or (6) (2.sup.nd reaction step) and subsequently chlorinating the compound so obtained to the compound of formula (1) (3.sup.rd reaction step) according to the following scheme: ##STR1## In the above scheme: R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently of the other hydrogen; hydroxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkoxy. The compounds of formula (1) are used as UV absorbers or as starting products for the preparation of UV absorbers.

Process for the preparation of phenyldichloro-1,3,5-triazine compounds

Resorcinyl-triazines of formula ##STR1## are described. The compounds according to the invention are suitable especially as sunscreens in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions.

The invention relates to N-cyanomethylated chitosans of formula (1) and to the hydrolysates thereof of formula (2), as well as to processes for the preparation of these compounds. The cyanomethylated chitosans, in particular the hydrolysates corresponding to formula (2), find versatile utility as separating membranes, complexing agents, encrustation inhibitors, stabilisers for bleaching liquors, moisture retainers in cosmetic compositions, thickeners and repellents.
