In a fiber processing machine with a separating edge in which fibers as well as air are guided in a substantially predetermined transporting direction past the edge, trash particles are selectively removed from the fiber/air stream with the help of the edge. The adjustment of a separating element, in particular, the setting of the angular position of a separating surface and/or the penetration depth upstream from the separating surface is linked with an adaptation of the width of the eliminating gap. Also, at least one measure can be taken for eliminating, as far as possible, a pressure drop and/or air turbulences downstream (in the transporting direction) from the edge. Downstream from the edge, a flow pattern as laminar as possible is generated or maintained, respectively.

A grinding apparatus for the flats of a card comprises elastically bendable elements which penetrate between the points of the flat clothing sweep along the lateral flanks of the flat clothing wires and grind the points in the process.

A flat of a revolving flat card is provided with a clothing the points of which are subdivided into groups. The flat preferentially presents an area provided with clothing of a length of more than 1000 mm. The groups each may present a 'heel', or a clothing plane each respectively, facing the main drum. The groups can be formed by respective clothing strips (flexible clothing) fastened on a support member to extend in the longitudinal direction thereof, or by saw tooth wire strips (metallic card clothing) arranged side by side and extending in transverse direction of the flat.

The carding distance (KA) between clothings (14, 15) is scanned using an optical device (22, 26) e.g. using a laser beam (24) from the side of the working area. The measuring value thus obtained can be compared to a pre-set target value in such a manner that the distance mentioned can be adjusted. Card with a controllable actuator system (32, 34) for setting the carding gap between the clothing on the main drum and the clothing on the flats, and with a programmable control system (12) which can influence the actuator system. A sensor system (26, 28) measures the carding gap in order to render regulation of the gap possible. The control system obtains, and processes respectively, data connected with the state of the clothing. The control system (12) is programmed in such a manner that regulation is effected as long as the measuring values supplied by the sensor system appear to be 'plausible'. If the plausibility no longer is ensured, the control system can deactivate the regulation steps and possibly can itself take over the adjustment process.

The flexible bend of a card is set automatically by the machine control by means of a controllable actuator system on the basis of a wear characteristic, this characteristic representing the wear as a function of the production of a given material.

A throttle valve is provided within a discharge air duct located adjacent a fiber duct receiving a fiber laden air stream. The throttle valve cooperates with a stop in a lowered position to form a gap to allow a minimal air flow therethrough. In addition, a weight is provided on an arm attached to the throttle valve for pivoting therewith. The weight is disposed to counterbalance a substantial portion of the weight of the flap valve in the raised position of the valve so that the air flow maintains the valve in the open condition.

A sliver-delivering machine such as a card and a sliver coiler are each provided with an independent drive including a frequency-controlled free-phase motor. In addition, a frequency converter is connected in common to the motor of each drive for supplying power to each. The motors of the sliver-delivering machine and the coiler have a load-dependent speed characteristic, for example, each is an asynchronous motor with a maximum slip of 3% over a delivery speed range of up to 300 m/min.

A connection between a flat rod of a revolving flat card and a flexible drive belt for the flat rods, having a flexible connecting element formed integrally with the drive belt and the connecting element being received directly in a part of the flat rod, for forming a snap-on connection, with the drive belt being arranged on a side opposite of the flat rod and including a flexible projection, with the projection being adapted for a frictional engagement, in a clampable manner, with a respective receiving element located at the ends of the flat rod.

A carding machine casing (1) is connected with a suction device (15) for preventing uncontrolled release of fibers and dust into the environment adjacent the machine, and the casing is provided with large suction openings (9, 10) having a combined area of not less than 0.5 m.sup.2 for admitting conveying air to the interior of the casing. The air is sucked in through the large openings at a substantially lower flow speed so that a considerably lower proportion of the airborne particles and fibrous particles occurring in a spinning mill are sucked into the suction device (15). In many cases it is no longer necessary to provide for precise sealing of the casing (1), and it is sometimes feasible to omit the use of a filter cloth over the suction openings (9, 10) or to simplify the maintenance (e.g., cleaning) of the filter.

Machine setting values containing similar functions are grouped together as a group in a setting value table and as many tables, as present groups, are correlated to machine operating elements. Parameter vectors are obtained from each table, effectuating a predetermined machine setting and the totality of the parameter vectors represent (for instance along a diagram axis) settings for the associated operating element. The group formation of setting values for a fine cleaning machine encompasses, for instance, setting values of the knife or carding element-distance from the beater circle, the point density of the carding element, the clamping distance of the feed trough or funnel from the clothing of the opening roller, and the rotational speed of the opening roller. These setting values are grouped together in a first group and included in a first table for forming parameter vectors for the cleaning intensity. The offset distance between a fiber guide and knife and the length of the separation gap between the knife and fiber guide are grouped together in a second group and included in a second table for the formation of parameter vectors for the quantity of waste. The setting elements of the fine cleaning machine can be linked by these parameter vectors and characteristic numbers of the parameter vectors are correlated to a respective operating element, which operating elements, due to linking of the setting elements by the table-linking, in each setting collectively define a working point of the fine cleaning machine.

Apparatus for controlling machines for cleaning of fibers

To ensure that on-line measurements performed at a moving or stationary fiber structure, such as a fiber composite or a sliver, deliver useful and reproducible measuring values, the fiber structure, whether such be fiber composites or fiber slivers, must be compressed at the location where they pass a measuring location or site where there is accomplished the measurement with a commercially available measuring instrument or apparatus. According to the invention, there is selected as the measuring location or site a location of the fiber processing process where the fiber structure is compressed any way by virtue of the undergoing fiber processing process.
