A coated abrasive article () comprises: a backing () comprising polyester and having a major surface (); a tie layer () directly bound to at least a portion of the major surface (); and an abrasive layer () directly bound to at least a portion of the tie layer (), the abrasive layer () comprising abrasive particles () and at least one binder resin (). The tie layer () comprises an at least partially cured blend of, on a solids basis, from 50 to 99 parts by weight of at least one styrene-butadiene copolymer latex and from 1 to 50 parts by weight of at least one resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. A treated backing () comprising polyester having the preceding tie layer () directly bound thereto is also disclosed.

Treated backing and coated abrasive article including the same

A method of making a mesh abrasive product comprises sequentially: 1) providing a production tool having a mold surface defining a plurality of shaped cavities and filling at least some of the shaped cavities with an abrasive composite precursor slurry, wherein the abrasive composite precursor slurry comprises abrasive particles dispersed within a curable binder precursor; 2) contacting the mold surface with an open mesh backing comprising interwoven threads defining openings, and having first and second opposed major sides; 3) ultrasonically vibrating the abrasive composite precursor slurry; 4) curing the curable binder precursor by exposing it to sufficient actinic electromagnetic radiation to provide isolated shaped abrasive composites contacting and secured to the first major side of the open mesh backing; and 5) separating the mesh abrasive product from the production tool. An open mesh abrasive product preparable by the method is also disclosed.

Mesh abrasive and method of making the same

The disclosure relates to an abrasive article comprising: a fabric substrate comprising strands forming first void spaces between the strands; a laminate joined to the fabric substrate; a cured resin composition joined to the laminate opposite the fabric substrate; abrasive particles joined to the cured resin composition; and a plurality of second void spaces extending through the laminate coinciding with first void spaces in the fabric substrate. The disclosure also relates to methods of making such abrasive articles.

Abrasive article

A coated abrasive article comprises a backing having first and second opposed major surfaces. A make layer is bonded to the first major surface. Agglomerate grinding aid particles are directly bonded to the make layer. At least a portion of the agglomerate grinding aid particles comprise grinding aid particles retained in a binder, and are arranged according to an open predetermined pattern. Abrasive particles are directly bonded to the make layer in spaces between the agglomerate grinding aid particles. A size layer is directly bonded to the make layer, agglomerate grinding aid particles, and abrasive particles. A method of making a coated abrasive article, in which the agglomerate grinding aid particles are deposited onto a curable make layer precursor prior to depositing abrasive particles onto the curable make layer precursor in spaces between the agglomerate grinding aid particles is also disclosed.

Coated abrasive articles and methods of making coated abrasive articles

An abrasive article includes a first plurality of abrasive particles and a second plurality of abrasive particles. The first plurality of abrasive particles differ in at least one of a size, an average weight and a shape from the second plurality of abrasive particles. The first plurality of abrasive particles are spaced from the second plurality of abrasive particles by at least a minimum distance in the x-axis direction, and both the first plurality of abrasive particles and the second plurality of abrasive particles extend in similar paths to one another with respect to the y-axis.

Abrasive article with different pluralities of abrasive particles

In methods and systems of making an abrasive article, abrasive particles are loaded to a distribution tool including a plurality of upper walls defining a plurality of spacing slots, and a plurality of lower walls defining a plurality of distribution slots. The spacing slots are open to the distribution slots, which are open to a lower side of the tool. The loaded particles are spaced and distributed from the distribution tool to a major face of a backing web below the lower side and moving relative to the tool in a machine direction. The upper walls space the particles in the machine direction. The particles distributed by the lower walls undergo an orientation sequence in which each particle is oriented into a column aligned along the machine direction. The upper walls can be disposed oblique to the lower walls. The upper and lower walls can have pointed upper portions.

Systems and methods for making abrasive articles

A system includes a distribution tool, a backing, a first plurality of abrasive particles and a second plurality of abrasive articles. The distribution tool includes a first section and a second section. The first section is configured to receive the first plurality of abrasive particles and pass the first plurality of abrasive particles through one or more of the plurality of slots to the backing. The second plurality of abrasive particles differ in at least one of a size, an average weight and a shape from the first plurality of abrasive particles. The second section is configured to receive the second plurality of abrasive particles and pass the second plurality of abrasive particles through one or more of the plurality of slots to the backing.

Systems, methods and tools for distributing different pluralities of abrasive particles to make abrasive articles

Compositions that are curable to polythioether polymers are provided, comprising: a) a dithiol monomer; b) a diene monomer; c) a radical cleaved photoinitiator; d) a peroxide; and e) an amine; where the peroxide and amine together are a peroxide-amine redox initiator. In some embodiments, the amine is a tertiary amine. In some embodiments, the amine is selected from the group consisting of dihydroxyethyl-p-toluidine, N,N-diisopropylethylamine, and N, N, N', N&#x2033;, N&#x2033;-pentamethyl-diethylenetriamine. In some embodiments, the peroxide is selected from the group consisting of di-tert-butyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, and benzoyl peroxide. In some embodiments, the composition may additionally comprise a polythiol monomer having three or more thiol groups.
