This document provides methods and materials for treating cancer (e.g., estrogen receptor positive breast cancer). For example, methods and materials for identifying a mammal (e.g., a human) with cancer (e.g., estrogen receptor positive breast cancer) as having A&#x2192;G variant genotype of rs6990851 and/or as having an elevated level of CSMD1 nucleic acid expression and administering one or more aromatase inhibitors (e.g., anastrozole) to treat the mammal identified as having such genotype and/or elevated level are provided.
