Liquid crystal display device and manufacturing method for same

A liquid crystal display device with a higher aperture ratio is provided. According to one embodiment of the present invention, second color filters are formed so as to overlap with first color filters when adjacent color filters having different colors are formed on the TFT substrate side, so that the angle of the first tapers where said first color filters overlap and the angle of the second tapers where said second color filters overlap are set to 45&#xb0; or more and 90&#xb0; or less.

A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate on which pixels having a thin film transistor are formed in regions surrounded by scanning lines and video signal lines, a second substrate which faces the first substrate and having color filters and light blocking films formed thereon, and a liquid crystal layer which is sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate. The thin film transistor has a gate electrode connected to the scanning line, a drain electrode connected to the video signal line and a source electrode connected to a pixel electrode. The pixels include first pixels having a first width and second pixels having a second width smaller than the first width. The pixel electrode of the second pixel has a branch electrode extending from the pixel electrode with at least a portion of the branch electrode overlapping the video signal line or the scanning line.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device includes pixels A and pixels B, wherein a width BB of the pixel B is smaller than a width AA of the pixel A. A pixel electrode formed in the pixel B is smaller than a pixel electrode formed in the pixel A in area and hence, capacitance formed between the pixel electrode and a counter electrode which is formed below the pixel electrode with an insulation film sandwiched therebetween becomes small. To eliminate this difference in capacitance, a first branch electrode and a second branch electrode are formed on the pixel electrode of the pixel B thus increasing capacitance between the pixel electrode and the counter electrode. Due to such a constitution, it is possible to prevent the deterioration of image quality attributed to imbalance of capacitance.

An IPS-method liquid crystal display device which exhibits small directivity of a viewing angle and high brightness is realized. A planar common electrode is arranged below a pixel electrode which includes comb-teeth-shaped electrodes and slits. When a video signal is applied to the pixel electrode, an electric field is generated between the pixel electrode and the common electrode by way of slit portions formed in the pixel electrode thus controlling liquid crystal molecules. To reduce the occurrence of a phenomenon that an abnormal domain is generated in an end portion of the slit and the abnormal domain lowers transmissivity of liquid crystal, the structure in which the slits having both ends thereof closed and the slits having one-side end portion thereof opened are alternately arranged next to each other in parallel is adopted.

An object of the present invention is to prevent the domain from being generated in the pixel end portions so that the transmittance can increase in an IPS type liquid crystal display device where the size of the pixels is extremely small. In the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the electrodes close to the liquid crystal layer have a comb-like structure having a linking portion only at one pixel end, the end portion of the comb-like structure has a structure for preventing the domain from growing, the width of the slits in the comb-like structure is greater than the width of the electrodes, and the alignment of the liquid crystal layer has such a pretilt angle that the liquid crystal rises from the end portion in the comb-like structure towards the root in the interface close to the electrode.

A liquid crystal display device comprising a liquid crystal display panel that has a first substrate (SUB), a second substrate (SUB) disposed so as to oppose the first substrate (SUB), and a liquid crystal layer (LC) sandwiched between the first substrate (SUB) and the second substrate (SUB); wherein the first substrate (SUB) has a reflective electrode (RAL) having a surface formed in an irregular shape; an organic insulation film () formed in a layer above the reflective electrode (RAL); a transparent electrode () formed in a layer above the organic insulation film (); an inorganic insulation film () formed in a layer above the transparent electrode (); and a pixel electrode (PIX) formed in a layer above the inorganic insulation film ().

A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer, a light-shielding film, a plurality of subpixels on the first substrate, a first electrode for each of the subpixels, a second electrode for each of the subpixels, and a color filter formed on the second substrate for each of the subpixels. The second electrodes each include a plurality of linear portions, wherein the subpixels include first and second subpixels that are adjacent to each other. A signal line forms between the first subpixel and second subpixel, and the color filter is formed across the signal line in the same color, and the second electrodes of the first and second subpixels are formed separately, and the second electrode of the first subpixel is disposed to an area of the second subpixel beyond the signal line.

A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate with a liquid crystal material sandwiched therebetween, a pixel having an optically transmissive portion and an optically reflective portion, a phase plate which is formed between the second substrate and the liquid crystal material in the optically transmissive portion of the pixel, and a color filter which is formed between the second substrate and the liquid crystal material in the optically transmissive portion of the pixel and between the phase plate and the liquid crystal material in the optically reflective portion of the pixel. A counter electrode is formed between the color filter and the liquid crystal material, and a pixel electrode is formed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal material. An electric field which is produced by a voltage between the pixel electrode and the counter electrode induces behavior of the liquid crystal material.

Liquid crystal display device having a protrusive film formed over a phase plate in a reflective pixel region

In a liquid crystal display device into which a phase difference film is incorporated on the color filter substrate side, the phase difference film can be formed more easily than the prior art. A pair of substrates and a liquid crystal display panel having a liquid crystal sandwiched between the above described pair of substrates are provided in such a manner that the above described liquid crystal display panel has a number of subpixels, each subpixel in the above described number of subpixels has a transmission portion and a reflection portion, and a first substrate from among the above described pair of substrates has: a light blocking film which is formed at least in a border between the above described transmission portion and the above described reflection portion and at least has a portion which surrounds only the above described reflection portion; an orientation film for orienting the phase difference film formed on the above described light blocking film; a phase difference film formed inside the portion surrounded by the above described light blocking film on the above described orientation film; a color filter formed on the above described phase difference film; and a flattened film formed on the above described color filter.

Liquid crystal display device with a light blocking film formed on a surface of a substrate that surrounds a phase difference film and an orientation film also formed on the substrate surface between the substrate and the phase difference film

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device comprising a liquid crystal display panel which includes a pair of substrates and liquid crystal sandwiched between the pair of substrates, the liquid crystal display panel including a plurality of sub pixels, each sub pixel of the plurality of sub pixels including a pixel electrode and a counter electrode, and the pixel electrode and the counter electrode generating an electric field for driving the liquid crystal, wherein a terminal portion is formed in a region outside a display region on one substrate out of the pair of substrates, the terminal portion includes a lower electrode portion and an upper electrode portion which is formed on the lower electrode portion and is electrically connected with the lower electrode portion, and the upper electrode portion is constituted of a first transparent conductive film and a second transparent conductive film which is formed on the first transparent conductive film.

A liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal display panel, which includes a pair of substrates, liquid crystal sandwiched between the substrates, a plurality of sub pixels, each sub pixel including a transmissive portion and a reflective portion, a light blocking film formed on one of the substrates, color filters formed on the one substrate, a leveling film formed on the light blocking film and the color filters, an orientation film formed on the leveling film, a retardation film formed on the orientation film at portions corresponding to the reflective portions of the respective sub pixels, and a protective film formed on the retardation film. The orientation film extends at least from the reflective portion to the transmissive portion, the protective film covers the retardation film and a region of the orientation film, the region of the orientation film is a region where the retardation film is not formed.

In a transflective liquid crystal display device, assuming that a narrower angle among angles formed by the initial liquid crystal alignment direction of a liquid crystal layer, and the projection direction of a pixel electrode of a transmissive unit is &#x3b8;t and that a narrower angle among angles formed by the initial liquid crystal alignment direction of the liquid crystal layer, and the projection direction of a pixel electrode of a reflective unit is &#x3b8;r, (1) when the liquid crystal layer possesses a positive-type liquid crystal, the relation of &#x3b8;t&#x3e;&#x3b8;r is satisfied, and (2) when the liquid crystal layer possesses a negative-type liquid crystal, the relation of &#x3b8;r&#x3e;&#x3b8;t is satisfied. The relations are satisfied by slanting or bending at least one of the pixel electrodes, and the reflectivity is improved.
