A display device includes: a display panel having a display area overlapping pixels; a light source device located on a lateral side of the display panel and configured to emit first light to a first side surface side of the display panel to cause the first light to travel toward a second side surface side; a reflective member located on the second side surface and configured to reflect the first light as second light from the second side surface side toward the first side surface side; and a drive circuit configured to calculate an output gradation value for each pixel based on a light quantity obtained by summing a first light quantity of the first light and a second light quantity of the second light at the pixel and an input gradation value of an image signal and apply a voltage corresponding to the output gradation value to the pixel.

Display device

A display device includes: a light source device including a first light source, a second light source, and a third light source; a display; a storage configured to store data indicating a lighting pattern of the light source device; a controller configured to control the lighting pattern based on the input data and the data. The controller is configured to produce n lighting periods during a display output period of a frame image. Colors of light from the light source device during the n lighting periods differ from one another. The data includes information indicating lighting patterns that allow different color gamuts to be reproduced in the n lighting periods. The controller is configured to control, when the color reproduction changes, the lighting pattern based on a difference between the lighting pattern for the input data before the change and the lighting pattern for the input data after the change.

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal optical element includes a transparent substrate having a first main surface, an alignment control layer having a plurality of convex bodies, and a liquid crystal layer having a cholesteric liquid crystal. The alignment control layer has a first alignment area in which the convex bodies are arranged at a first pitch, and a second alignment area in which the convex bodies are arranged at a second pitch. The second pitch is less than the first pitch. The liquid crystal layer has a first liquid crystal area which overlaps the first alignment area, and a second liquid crystal area which overlaps the second alignment area.

According to one embodiment, an alignment processing device includes a light source, a polarizing beam splitter, a first optical system, a second optical system, a first retardation film, a second retardation film, a moving mechanism configured to move a processing substrate in which a thin film is formed, and a controller. Interfering light is formed in an exposure area by first circularly polarized light and second circularly polarized light. The controller performs control so as to repeat a process of exposing part of an area of the thin film by the interfering light and a process of moving the processing substrate.

Alignment processing device and manufacturing method of liquid crystal optical element

A display device includes: a display panel with pixels; a light source with light emission points; an acquirer configured to acquire viewpoint information; and a controller configured to control image display based on the viewpoint information on positions of viewpoints and an arrangement direction of the viewpoints. The controller is configured to drive some or all of pixels positioned on straight lines each connecting a corresponding one of the light emission points to a corresponding one of the viewpoints based on a relative rotation angle between the display panel and the arrangement direction and a relative positional relation between the viewpoints and the light emission points. The light emission points are individually switchable between a turned-on state and a turned-off state. A pitch of the light emission points is smaller than a pitch of light emission points controlled to be turned on when outputting an individual image to each viewpoint.

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal optical element including a first substrate including a first transparent substrate, a first alignment film, and a first liquid crystal layer which includes first cholesteric liquid crystals, and which reflects part of light incident through the first transparent substrate toward the first transparent substrate, a second substrate including a second transparent substrate, a second alignment film, and a second liquid crystal layer which includes second cholesteric liquid crystals, and which reflects part of light transmitted through the first liquid crystal layer toward the first transparent substrate, and a transparent adhesive layer which adheres the first substrate and the second substrate.

Liquid crystal optical element

The display device includes an image display panel emitting linearly polarized light from a display area, a retardation plate on the image display panel, a variable phase difference element located on the retardation plate and providing phase difference to an incoming light, and a liquid crystal diffraction element on the variable phase difference element. The variable phase difference element is switchable between an on state, an off state, and an intermediate state, and the phase change of the intermediate state is smaller than the phase change of the on state. A first emission direction of a first emitted light in the on state, a second emission direction of a second emitted light in the off state, and a third emission direction of a third emitted light in the intermediate state are different from each other.

A display device includes: a display panel including a display region overlapping pixels; a light source device disposed on a lateral side of the display panel; and a drive circuit configured to calculate an output gradation value based on an input gradation value and to output a pixel drive signal corresponding to the output gradation value to a corresponding one of the pixels. The pixels include a first pixel and a second pixel arranged in a first direction from a first side surface toward a second side surface. The second pixel is between the first pixel and the second side surface. When the input gradation value for the first pixel is equal to the input gradation value for the second pixel, the drive circuit is configured to set the output gradation value for the second pixel to be larger than the output gradation value for the first pixel.

According to one embodiment, in a display device a first panel includes a first polarizing plate, a second polarizing plate, and a first liquid crystal panel interposed between the first polarizing plate and the second polarizing plate, a second panel includes a third polarizing plate, a fourth polarizing plate, and a second liquid crystal panel interposed between the third polarizing plate and the fourth polarizing plat, and a polarizing plate, which is located second from a surface close to an illumination device and a surface closest to an observer, has an extinction ratio that is lower than that of each of the other polarizing plates.

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal optical element includes an optical waveguide including a first main surface and a second main surface opposed to the first main surface, an alignment film disposed on the second main surface, a liquid crystal layer which overlaps the alignment film, which includes cholesteric liquid crystals, and which reflects at least part of light incident through the optical waveguide toward the optical waveguide, and a transparent first protective layer which overlaps the liquid crystal layer, and which is formed of a water-soluble polymer or a fluorine-based resin.

Liquid crystal optical element and method for manufacturing the same

According to one embodiment, a polarization conversion element includes a first light guide including a first main surface and a side surface, a transmissive first polarization grating opposed to the side surface, and a reflective second polarization grating opposed to the first main surface. The first polarization grating is configured to diffract first circularly polarized light of unpolarized incident light and to diffract second circularly polarized light which rotates in a direction opposite to the first circularly polarized light in a direction different from the first circularly polarized light. The second polarization grating is configured to reflect the first circularly polarized light on the reflective surface.

Polarization conversion element

According to an aspect, a display device includes: a display panel having a display area provided with pixels; a dimming panel disposed so as to face the display panel and having a dimming area provided with dimming pixels; and a light source configured to emit light that travels from the dimming panel toward the display panel. When a pixel among the pixels is controlled to be lit up in white, blurring processing is applied so as to cause more than one of the dimming pixels including a dimming pixel overlapping the pixel to transmit light, and light from the light source is transmitted through the blurring area and the pixel. The blurring area is determined based on a positional misalignment with respect to a predetermined positional relation between the display area and the dimming area.

A display device includes a display panel and a light source device. A display period of a frame image includes three subframe periods and an adjusting subframe period. The light source device emits light for reproducing a color corresponding to first chromaticity coordinates in a first subframe period, emits light for reproducing a color corresponding to second chromaticity coordinates in a second subframe period, emits light for reproducing a color corresponding to third chromaticity coordinates in a third subframe period, and emits light for reproducing a differential color in the adjusting subframe period. A chromaticity coordinate area with the first to third chromaticity coordinates as apexes includes chromaticity coordinates of pixel data obtained by excluding partial pixel data from pixel data included in frame image data. The differential color is a complementary color of a mixed color of three colors corresponding to the first to third chromaticity coordinates.

A display device incudes: a display panel including a plurality of pixels; and a dimming panel that is disposed between the display panel and a light source of light to be emitted to the display panel and includes a plurality of dimming pixels. When one of the pixels produces an output at highest luminance and the other pixels produce an output at lowest luminance to the display panel, the light is transmitted through a predetermined one of the dimming pixels located on an optical axis of the light that is emitted to the one of the pixels and through the other dimming pixels arranged around the predetermined dimming pixel. A degree of transmission of the light through the other dimming pixels decreases as the light is away along one direction from the predetermined dimming pixel, and there are a plurality of directions having different degrees of the decrease.

According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal element includes a transparent substrate including a first main surface, a plurality of structures disposed on the first main surface and arranged along one direction, an alignment film disposed on a surface of each of the structures and a liquid crystal layer containing a cholesteric liquid crystal and in contact with the alignment film, and the helical axis of the cholesteric liquid crystal is inclined with respect to the first main surface, each of the plurality of structures includes a first surface inclined with respect to the first main surface, in the plurality of structures, the first surfaces are parallel to each other, and the alignment film is interposed between the first surface and the liquid crystal layer.
